Going back to the subject, we simply need a decentralized solution, as the topic says. If Wikileaks can have their servers everywhere - why can't Bitcoin? There are so many geeks here we surely could come up with something. Besides, the more exchanges the better; some people blame mtgox for being a monopolist (I know this is an exaggeration). Why don't they go ahead and create their own exchange? Instead of complaining just do something.
All these attacks only prove how much we depend on mtgox, we should learn from this and get ourselves together to come up with a decentralized system.
The other night I was thinking about it and come to a conclusion that we need something portable and universal, so that anybody can download it and run it. This piece of software would connect and sync to other nodes and anybody wanting to trade could connect to any of these nodes. Unfortunately I don't have the knowledge to implement such system. Is it even feasible?

SmokeTooMuch that is exactly what I am saying. There is no proof that he did it and if you put yourself in his shoes you can understand why these angry posts were made. Our emotional nature is our worst enemy. People's reputations are at stake and this community might lose valuable members because of such stupid misunderstandings. So lets not jump to conclusions.

SmokeTooMuch do you honestly believe that was written by someone who launched ddos? I admit it was not terribly wise to post such nonsense and he did not help his situation by doing so, but I don't believe it could have been him.

Bitcoinex's attacks are preventing many people from accessing their property stored in Mt. Gox.
May I ask how do you know it is him? He has admitted it many times. Well, I think I read through most of the posts on this forum, but never read one where he admitted doing it. Can you post a link?

In theory, you don't have to update your back ups because it's the keys that you are actually backing up. All the transactions are stored in the block chain on the network. Although, there might be a possibility of data corruption(on the medium you store the encrypted wallet) for whatever reason, so in practice it's probably not a bad idea to update your backup once in awhile. Also, it helps you to remember the password used for encryption. Doing it every few months should be more than enough.

Is there any problem BTC can't solve? BTC can't buy you happiness? Well, drug dealers already accept BTC, the only thing left is hookers.

what i meant was your encrypted email is kept on the servers of your email provider, not your isp, unless your isp is your email provider
what do you think of GoDaddy? I had GoDaddy account, but had to close it due to downtime and tech support incompetence. My personal view is that company is useless. There is a detailed post by Vladimir about backing up your wallet: https://www.bitcoin.org/smf/index.php?topic=5194.msg75733What I personally do is use cascade encryption. Truecrypt has a way of encrypting data with three algorithms. If data is encrypted you can keep it anywhere. The only problem then becomes retrieving it and that's up to you and your imagination where to store it. I keep a copy of my encrypted wallet on a few of my computers, dropbox, gmail, few friends have usb sticks that i gave them and few other places that I would not want to reveal. Now I know, that whatever happens, I'll still be able to retrieve my keys from at least one of these places. Also, I think good practice is to use different keys for your everyday transactions and keeping bigger amounts - like having current and savings account. This is the philosophy of a paranoid man, but it's better be safe than sorry

So do you true-crypt --> email? Or some other encryption method?
truecrypt is not a method. it's software which provides various methods for encryption.

encripted in e-mail attach
that would mean the encrypted wallet would reside on my ISP's server. would i really want to leave it there? Depends what email you use

It is sad, that we care about PR that much.
PR matters, if you care about bitcoin being successful. 1. I'm not saying it doesn't 2. If it comes to ultimatum between PR and freedom of information I choose freedom of information, as majority of this community judging by the poll results. I hope I am wrong, but I think this will damage our economy and image in the long run. How can we advocate anonymity and freedom if these are the exact things we are banning??? This is disgraceful!!!

If a bitcoin bank were to misrepresent the number of bitcoins they were in possession of and loan out more than they had, they would effectively be printing money.
Can you explain how you send more bitcoins than you have? You can't. That's kind of the point. Fractional reserve banking is what it's called: You have people who deposit funds in your bank for safe keeping, convenience, financial gain, whatever. Only a limited percentage of those funds will actually be withdrawn in any given timeframe, so you calculate that you can give out, say, 150% of funds people have actually deposited into your bank as loans, increasing your profits. As long as there's no bank run, no-ones the wiser. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPWH5TlbloU

I still think trade will need to move elsewhere, for a number of reasons. Of course, then you get the question of whether it's good for bitcoin.org to link to trade sites that have links to sites where people trade controversial goods and services...
Trade IS elswhere. Nobody's trading on the wiki. It's just a god damn link! A piece of INFORMATION.

The userbase that is going to build up, don't even care enough to express their opinion and vote. They will be the first leaving the sinking ship instead of repairing it, while the rest who really care will suffer. I don't think there was any pressure from wiki or any other legal threats against those links. It is clearly a decision made in someone's personal interest. All and any information should be free. THIS DECISION IS A LOAD SHIT!
There was a decision? https://www.bitcoin.org/smf/index.php?topic=6602.msg103057#msg103057

What we have here is my iPhone 3G 16GB. It's about 2 years old. I bought it new from cardphone warehouse. It comes with original box and everything that came with it. Make me an offer. Bitcoins only If you live in London I could arrange delivery for an extra 5 BTC on top of whatever we agree. If you live in EU, it would cost you 10 BTC. If anyone interested from US, i'll have to contact post office for a quote.
