Good press for Bitcoin and bad press for banks must be good for our lovely little alt-coin!  Grin

When do banks ever get good press? They pretty much ruined the economy and we had to foot the bill.

Very true. People are losing faith in the banks. That's where Bitcoin will prevail and make us all millionaires. It will be because of the scheming banks that we become rich I tells ya!  Grin

I think alts are great if they're innovative.

Which alts are innovative? I don't think I've seen any in the past couple of months that are.

Zerocoin. It's suppose to launch May 2014. It will make transactions provably anonymous, unlike Bitcoin. Also google Cloudcoin, Bitcloud's cryptocurrency, they both actually serve a purpose and are not built on an existing cryptocurrency.

I've seen you push Zerocoin a lot, are you involved in it at all?

You might get some good money for this one: GETBITCOINWALLET.com

Very keyword heavy.
765  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to introduce someone to Bitcoin? on: January 25, 2014, 09:53:08 PM
Hey guys Grin
I just heard about Bitcoin at the end of the last yer but since them I've become interested in Bitcoin. The fact that it has been growing so well and that there are daily conferences about Bitcoin around the world is fascinating to me.

I've been trying to introduce people to Bitcoin, but with no success. I normally show them websites that accept payments in Bitcoin, and I also show them coinmap.org, where they can see that there are about 3000 physical places in the world already accepting Bitcoin. At this point everything is going fine.

But then, I'm trying to think of an advantage of using Bitcoin over physical money, and I can't think of many. I tell them that opening a wallet is a lot easier than opening a bank account. But then I try to warn them that software wallets in the computer they use daily is a bad idea because of attacks from hackers, keyloggers and trojans, and that scares them and it also scares me a little bit to be honest.

Then, they ask me "How can I get Bitcoins?". And I'm not sure of what to say. A lot of people aren't very interested in economics or in investments, and some maybe are but at this point where a single Bitcoin can cost 800 USD it's very hard for a small investor to get into Bitcoins. I also mention that you can mine Bitcoins using your computer, but that it will cost them a lot of money to a get decent hardware to do that because CPUs and GPUs aren't great to mine Bitcoin anymore, and let's not forget the electricity costs.

So, I can't really convince anyone. The only thing that I can say about Bitcoin is that you can open a wallet in under 20 minutes and that's it.

Do you have any ideas?
Thanks.

First of all, remember to tell your friends that they can get a small amount of bitcoin for free to play around with until they're convinced. They can do this with bitcoin faucets. They can then ramp it up and start getting more free bitcoin by doing things like advertising in their signature on here.

Regarding the advantages over normal money (also known as fiat):

  • No central bank that controls your money, creating/amending rules on the fly
  • You can send money with no fees in most cases
  • There's no tax to pay on Bitcoin earnings (yet!)

Read this post as there are loads of advantages - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=60049.0

766  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Boom Festival 2014 now accepting bitcoins! on: January 25, 2014, 09:45:20 PM
Bitcoin is certainly philosophically aligned with the free-spirit nature of most music festivals.  If anyone from the bitcoin community is attending I would be curious to hear about any vendors that are wheeling and dealing in BTC.

Yeah, please report back here with the details. I agree. The UK is begging for revolution at the moment, and bitcoin compliments that perfectly. We have a government that are selfish, conniving dicks, and a 'democratic' system where there's nobody you want to vote for. I know it's not as bad as other nations with obvious oppression, and it's important to have that perspective.

Anyway, let us know what you find.

OP - as someone who is into zerocoin and dark wallets, do you know much about bitcoin tumbling?  I've never used a tumbling service myself but it seems like tumbling might address issues of anonymity for those who want anonymity.  What would get everyone else to switch over?

Is tumbling where the payment goes through various transactions before arriving at it's destination?

Yeah, it's just a way of laundering money by bouncing transactions around.

Ah thought so. Not a bad idea for anonymity if it works ok. I'd want to know which addresses it was going through though. I can imagine some companies will tout this and then run when it's in their wallet!

I read in a google product forum in early 2013, one person was asking for Bitcoin payment and ignorant people were accusing him as a scammer. 1 year ....so much has changed.

Yeah I heard a similar story to this. I used to be a neysayer on Bitcoin. I remember telling a friend how it all sounded like a scam. Now I'm eating my words!

A lot of people assume it's a scam because of the if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is ethos.

Yeah very good point. My friend tried to get me into it when Bitcoin was around $50. How I wish I'd listened! I got in at $850!
770  Other / Meta / Re: Stop and Ban those alt coins copycats now on: January 25, 2014, 09:37:39 PM
Almost all(in fact, all) of the alt-coins out there are going to be a waste of time.  They're being created to take advantage of people who get super excited about different things and then get pumped and dumped.

Most alt coins are completely pointless and just poor replicas of what's already out there with little to no improvement.

Those alt coins(junkcoins) are spreading the investment of bitcoin and can't be good for crypto as a whole, they will also destroy people's trust of cryptocurrencies after their crash and run and disapparation. only their "developers" or "early adopters team" will get rich quick by taking your money away.

Bitcoin has a limit of only 21 million, however with all these so called "alt coins", the total number of crypto is in fact unlimited and make all cryptocurrencies end up into a ponzi scheme(only detract from people's perceived value of Bitcoin and the legitimacy of cryptos in general)

Stop and Ban those alt coins copycats now, let the money flow back to the bitcoin!

I think that the alt-coins actually take advantage of people new to cryptocurrency. I remember clearly thinking to myself when I first got into this, 'Bitcoin is pretty expensive and it's not profitable to mine it on my laptop, how about another alt'. This is when newbies look at alternatives and get caught up in the bull of it all. I nearly got swept away in Coinye.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Remember though, charities are obliged to make their earnings public. Might struggle if all money is held in bitcoin.

Why? There's a public record there for all to see. It's as transparent as it could get.

Yeah which is fine for us but every hoop to jump through is another challenge at pushing Bitcoin.

Thats a fair point you raised, clearly these are things we would have to start looking into. Somebody over at litecoin talk has already brought up that the litecoin association has already applied as a non profit. And i guess just keeping a open dialog with the right authorities.

I think it's a great idea if, like you say, everything is followed in terms of charity regulation. There are also certain headings that the charity has to fit under. For example, one heading in the UK is 'the relief and prevention of poverty'. If you can fit a heading and convince them to allow the public documents to show Bitcoin, I can't see why it wouldn't work. Unless it was a bitcoin based charity but money was held in fiat.

No tax benefits for using bitcoin here as charities don't pay tax either.

I think the action needs to be taken before we see any potential value increase. News isn't enough anymore it seems. If google announce it as done, I think the price will move for sure. It's all speculation of course.

I've convinced toddlers to play video games and how to read basic words, you can show them a lot if your willing to put in the time, I'll even have them doing simple math, because the games they play demand it.

Wait till this is fully developed: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=431248.0 For punishment, parents will be able to set how many blocks their kids need to mine before they're able to play their favorite game. During the entire time, the kid will see some game (read advert) they desire to have and how many blocks are left to quarry before it's paid for and shipped to their door, ergo punishment time is over, yet the kid's still quarrying away hours later about to reach their goal.

Pretty powerful concept, eh?

You read it here second.

This made me angry just reading it. Nobody should be obligated to tell ANYONE what they want to spend their own money on. What are they going to do, deny the withdrawal if it isn't a 'good enough reason'. How about, 'because I don't trust you with my money'. Wonder how that would have gone down.

I prefer the "your mum" approach when they ask you what you're going to be spending it on  Grin.

Haha, yeah me too!  Cheesy
