761  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: In re Bitcoin Devs are idiots on: March 12, 2013, 05:49:04 AM
v0.7 reliance on BDB caused it to be fundamentally broken/flawed. Its actions weren't consistent with either the documented protocol, the higher level source code, or anyone's understanding/expectation of what should have happened.  It was a landmine.

Does this not argue for a diversity of implementations with different underlying 3rd party libraries ? Clearly it does. But this cannot happen until and unless there is actually a formal-enough spec to enable those to be written w/o ever "groking" all that C++ folklore, which is a moving target anyways ...

I agree on that 100%.  It is inevitable that to survive Bitcoin will need to be move beyond a monoculture.  Right now all the clients share the same "DNA".  If there is a fatal genetic flaw in it then the network will not survive.   This time the "landmine" was accidental, next time it may be planted.
That is not correct.  v0.7 nodes accepted a 1MB block on testnet.  The issue was more complex then just the size of the block.  By the protocol the block which was rejected by some nodes SHOULD have been accepted.  The 250kb soft limit was simply a default for block construction.  Even with it in place nodes should have accepted properly constructed blocks up to the 1MB limit.  It also appears not all v0.7 nodes were affected.  Some accepted the problem block and some didn't.  The defect/limit in BDB wasn't documented and didn't occur in all versions/platforms.

v0.7 reliance on BDB caused it to be fundamentally broken/flawed. Its actions weren't consistent with either the documented protocol, the higher level source code, or anyone's understanding/expectation of what should have happened.  It was a landmine.

Notwithstanding that blocks of 1mb should have been accepted if valid, the limit prevented too many of them from being made.

If the limit had been removed at a reasonable time, those blocks would have occasionally been made, and the overall problem would have been much contained.

I would like to also point out that the alexkravets idea re specification is sound. The only way forward for the dev team, provided they wish to preserve a shred of dignity, is a. immediately start work on specification, which is the only priority, and release no further versions until such specification is complete and b. immediately start work on removing all magic numbers and assorted code smelliness from their UNreference implementation of crap, and not release any further version before they've released a clean one.

In that order.

Whoa... All of this... Agreement...
762  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Litecoin Dev. Team ? on: March 12, 2013, 05:43:35 AM
Bitcoin is alpha litecoin is beta

I believe it is more Bitcoin is a beta, while Litecoin is Pre-Alpha EXPERIMENTAL: DEV BRANCH.

As screwed as Bitcoin might appear right now, this hiccup is just Bitcoin getting screwed in the sense that its getting its dick a little wet.

Litecoin yet to attain sufficient value to demonstrate its central promise, that it can resist attacks from specialized hardware (it lost a weaker version of this when GPU mining started). Now that it's gaining some value people might test the strong version of this. In the interim it does the typical cryptocoin things alright, and is useful for those tasks.
763  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: freedigitalmoney.com feedback? on: March 11, 2013, 05:00:56 AM
thanks guys, glad i asked
a few years back i used to make money by doing offers on freeipod it worked up till 2008 after that it was almost impossible to complete offers and make any cash
wondering if any offer sites still in business?

Not really. There's some that will pay dust amounts of bitcoins, but... those are awfully hard to spend.
764  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: freedigitalmoney.com feedback? on: March 11, 2013, 02:42:49 AM
They don't pay all that well. The only offers that pay reliably in my experience are the ones where you just play Youtube videos. Everything else takes a lot of time for a remote chance of payment.

It seems especially remote that this could pay out, but I put this bet in on Spain this morning over PR 757e6bf6e0e9e6bee06a46c8564c2ba7324021dd5f04f1cb257842d87afee808

Spain doesn't seen to realize they can't steal on Yadie... Beltran's a beast... This transaction just doesn't show up in your search though. Bulk of the coins from 1Magr1FdjAHeST3aVeFQSMZdPKSzWWSfpL to 144VJuG8UzKXDChZzn82ygjJowRAfTWZvM 0.25 BTC

Hi Atruk,

The Spain bet should now show up correctly in the bet history.

Cheers  Smiley

Cool, shame the starting pitcher ate a huge dick though.

767  Economy / Speculation / Re: Someone's dumping slowly on: March 08, 2013, 05:04:42 AM
Isn't there a list of the highest net worth bitcoin addresses somewhere here in the forum, that is updated on a regular basis?  It seems like anybody that has the ability to continuously dump 500 btc at a time must have enough to be on that list.  It would be interesting if someone were able to mine into this data and see which of those addresses is depleting in 500 btc chunks.  I don't know how to do it.

Those are the richest addresses but the highest net worth people most likely don't have all their coins in one address. In fact I remember reading that there are  42 thousand addresses with just 50 bitcoin. I would bet that a large portion of those are actually Satoshi. What better.. more clever way to hide your hoard of money than to mine it but assign it a new key for every block reward. I bet he has about 1.5 million bitcoins

That would be a lot of addresses to keep track of!  Tongue

The right clients handle it nicely.

If you are a programmer it wouldn't be a big deal.

No need to be a programmer, but reading and understanding the code can help you find and trust the right client...
768  Economy / Speculation / Re: We've seen this before people... on: March 08, 2013, 04:06:48 AM

I think a bit above silver is a decent place to correct to for a while. Bitcoin has had it's historical struggles with 1, 5, and 10 dollar parity. It's history at price points above that is much more fragmented though. If the market corrects downwards some time around $20 or $30, and bitcoin overlaps occasionally at an unreasonably low price with silver at an unreasonably high price things would be good for both.

Why would there be any correlation between the price of an ounce of silver and the price of a bitcoin?

No important reason, but it makes a nice psychological one. Kind of like how five dollars sufficed so long as a happy middle to sit on after the last crash.

Very nice. Especially considering the volatility.
771  Economy / Speculation / Re: We've seen this before people... on: March 08, 2013, 02:22:12 AM
thank you I was looking all over for something that resembled this..So glad I didnt sell at $38. Gta keep reminding myself Im in this to win it, and Im not gna budge until i see it breach that $50 mark

"in this to win it" means selling a little above $50?

I think it's rational to think fair-value is single-digits (or less) or triple-digits (or more). There aren't really any convincing long-term scenarios that produce a stable middle ground.

As I've said before, the exchange rate is not stable anywhere between $10 and $500. So pick your long-term viewpoint, and stick with it.

773  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Hashing Algorithm on: March 07, 2013, 08:14:52 PM
thanks all, what i mean is it a direct usage approach of SHA-256 or it's some sort of customized SHA algorithm, if general SHA-2 algorithm there are plenty of resources if not, please point me where i can read more about it.

It's just two rounds of SHA-256, the standard stuff.

I’ll tell you what needs prosecuting next: the Bitcoin ring that ‘monetizes’ hacking of home computers, and creates the preferred currency of Tor-using child molesters. Tor isn’t the problem though. Tor is the communications medium. Bitcoin is the currency. Attack Bitcoin and you attack the core of the problem.

Tech at Night: Sacco, Vanzetti, and Aaron Swartz were all guilty. It’s time to break up the Bitcoin ring.

It seems the article's author forgot to take their Zyprexa...

The UK already aggressively shuts down bank accounts that have anything to do with bitcoin.  I think we are counting down to when this happens in other countries too.

well fagots are always first to eats other people fruitcaakes
once they know

look out for  atms  cash for btc
btc for cash 1% fee

game on popos:)

Faggots are delicious and have no need for fruitcake.

The UK though is already everything Orwell feared it would become.
776  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: my client crashed... Need light weight wallet on: March 07, 2013, 07:47:38 PM
Oh, and when you send your coins from Blockchain.info to Electrum make sure to include some amount of token fee to make sure the transaction gets confirmed in a timely manner.
777  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: my client crashed... Need light weight wallet on: March 07, 2013, 07:46:29 PM
thanks.
I have my electrum with a new wallet.
Dare I ask how to import my existing/old wallet into this Electrum?

It is asking me for my private key.
My research online has lead me to PyWallet.

Do I need to dive into that inorder to exctract my private key? I would imagine my wallet has more than one private key correct?

The easy way would be importing your wallet into a Blockchain.info wallet and then sending those coins to the Electrum wallet. PyWallet works well for what it does, but to ensure smooth usage of PyWallet it helps to have a strong technical background on what exactly the wallet file has. On the other hand Blockchain.info is drag and drop.
778  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: What does a low number of nodes mean? on: March 07, 2013, 07:41:27 PM
Just wait it will be confirmed in a day or two.. But remember, always pay the fees  Wink

Especially for the big transactions that a lot of client's will assume don't need them.
779  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Hashing Algorithm on: March 07, 2013, 07:39:12 PM
is there any source where i can read the core bitcoin hashing algorithm in depth?

Thanks in advance.

How much depth do you want?
