And most of that "official" gold is really just paper...

Or tungsten salted bars  Wink

Someone here was planning to 'melt tungsten' and pour it into hollowed out gold bars.  Good luck with that Wink

have to do it the other way around, tungstens melting temp is like 5x that of gold..

Au: mp: 1337 Kelvin
W:  mp: 3695 K

You might be able to melt tungsten in a graphite or diamond crucible, but I would guess that applying and holding that much energy in the apparatus would be a challenge.  And, of course, it's likely to turn the recipient gold container into a molten mess almost instantly unless the mass was so big as to make the whole adventure rather pointless.

But anyway, it would be easy enough to drill out the gold and hammer in some pegs which is almost certainly one of the techniques used.

It would be interesting to see if there is a popularization of gold bullion in the form factor of a spaghetti noodle.  This would allow some amount of non-destructive testing based on thermal expansion, and semi-non-destructive testing by giving the unit something of a bending test.  I guess the effectiveness would depend on what sort of metallurgy is possible with tungsten in order to impact its modulus of thermal expansion and elastic characteristics.

No need for all that..  A leeb hardness tester or a high current conductivity test should be able to ferret out any tungsten in a non destructive way Wink

i think its fair to say that today we heard a "snap".  a snap in the nerves of the many vs. the nerves of one.

the problem is, i don't see this changing for a long time.  we are about to breach the 1523 level and once that happens it will get even uglier.

You don't think China and various other countries will be buying up gold?  Eventually all of the EE's gold will be in China's vaults if they don't stop selling it at the depressed Paper price..

Why not get the bike with conventional financing.  Then use the extra money you have from the better milage to purchase bitcoin's (building rep).  Then lend the purchased BTC out, building even more rep!!  Oh and post pics of the bike once you get it!!

Yeah it seems like the trick is a pressurized/heated container..  I wonder how similar chicken eggs are to Platypi.  My friend thinks that trial runs of Chicken eggs could be beneficial to determing if it would work for Platypi..

Is there a way to use bitcoin to pay for Adult Friend Finder subscription?

Is that site worth anything? I mean are there real people there?

I heard that most "adult" dating sites are scams with mostly fake woman profiles put there by the management of the site to lure man into paying and then when you sign-up and pay you realize there are very little real people there, its just all fakes to make you think the site is big?

Its like 10 to 1 guy to girl ratio for active users.  Unless your a chick, or a babemagnet, don't bother.

Diagnostic imaging showing the onset of societal dementia:

The greater the separation between collective cognition (green) and functional results (blue), the closer a society is to being in a vegetative state. This is rapidly followed by system failure in the absence of external supportive measures.

Nice graph!

My forecast based upon my research in precious metals -- keep in mind I've only been learning about precious metals for about 3 months and I did not read through this thread:

1)  Gold short-term outlook = down
2)  Gold mid-term outlook = Huh?
3)  Gold long-term outlook = up

I do not believe the US dollar can sustain itself over time.  Gold will always remain useful for industrial purposes or for jewelry.  It will continue to be a status symbol whether or not it is used to back a currency.  Moreover, if and when the US dollar sees a significant decline in value, I would expect to see a positive correlation between gold and Bitcoin.

I'm looking to buy a little bit of gold right around $1500, and then more if it hits $1400.

3 mo 'eh?

you see there guys?  now you know you're in trouble.

He probably doesn't own any..  Now if he buys in with say 10% of his IRA.. We have a problem houston Wink

Its just temporary.  We get much lower and I might have to stop buying mining gear and start buying physical again Wink.

Someone better start buying or this baby is gonna be at 2 again..

Don't worry, I've got it covered with a $60 bid wall at $4.

Whew!, for a second I was worried Wink

I am starting to wonder if there ever will be a 24 hour
period where I'm going to *not* see one of those:

504 Gateway Time-out
nginx/0.7.67

I see:

GLBSE is under very heavy load
Possibly a DDOS attack, we're not quite sure, please give us some time to deal with it.

Share the load!!!

last chance to buy Bitcoin under $5.

Is it too early to call this prediction wrong?  If so, how long do I have to wait?

BTFD

I did so yesterday.  I got it for $1650 per Krugerrand.

Last time I bought Krugerrands the premium was like $20 bucks..  Lemme go dig around.. 1650 seems high, are we starting to see a physical to paper differential?

no, he overpaid.

Not by alot, I can't find any cheaper then $1632 with a quick search..  Interesting...

Pretty sure a 5970 mining will use a lot less power than a 7970...

Pretty sure your wrong. Wink

If the whole US power grid is offline:

...

3. You will need those firearms.
Which is exactly why my firearms collection is worth more then my BTC investment Wink

If we ever have a situation where having lots of firearms or 'prepper' stuff is desirable, I'll get all I need for either a few silver coins or a fraction of a BTC.  Either is fine with me.

If we don't see such a situation, an arsenal of guns is an expensive waste of time and target for thieves and the old canned food will taste like shit.

Thankfully my brain doesn't undergo stimulation from guns for whatever reason...I end up being able to deploy the resources elsewhere.  Unfortunately I'm not even interested enough to properly maintain those which I have.

If its all that dire, peeps won't trade the stuff you need for coins Wink (even if they are made of gold)..

I enjoy target shooting and reloading, and firearms do appreciate, so to me, its not a waste of time.   Old canned food does taste like shit Wink.  Fresh meat and produce rock!  (livestock + garden)

Really all you need for long term storage is a super heavy coat of oil and a low humidity environment.
879  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: May 11, 2012, 12:25:07 AM

You all seemed to have neglected how much of a store of value BTC is if say.. The grid goes down.  Its worth about as much as any paper/electronic assets will be worth in a sustained grid outage, which is basically Zero...  A roll of silver coins and a couple firearms.  They have value even when the Electricity is off..

If the whole US power grid is offline:

1. At least your bitcoin is totally safe!  Grin  Its not worth zero, its just....tied up.
2. If you're not already dead, you've got a lot more to worry about than money.
3. You will need those firearms.

880  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Mitt Romney(president) and Ron Paul (vp) on: May 11, 2012, 12:11:08 AM
If you actually listen and understand what Romney says you will see he follows Paul almost 100% on economic issues,  except for ending the fed and supporting the bank bailouts.  On social issues they are similar, federal government should not be involved.  They are both from the working sector.  They both have character.  Both understand that people work at corporations and stockholders are people.  They understand the importance of the choice in the private sector as oppose to planners in the public sector.   Both oppose unions,  that they prevent people from getting jobs there.  Both support a strong defense at home.

I support both Ron Paul and Mitt Romney.

I'm not an alcoholic, except for 3 beers a night and passing out in bars on the weekends.

Thats what I"m talkin bout!!
