Has anyone had any success running a masternode from a wallet on a local machine? No matter what I try, my node goes to status 0 after an hour or so.

It seems like this started happening on the later versions, it was definitely working with cold wallets on earlier versions. I dont think there is anything wrong with the setup process. I think we have to wait for a statement on the matter from the devs, I am sure we will hear from eduffield soon.

Maybe you misunderstood my PM, cold masternodes are NOT implemented yet.

You can "hide" the node with the money and have the wallet be encrypted, but you can't really take it offline. The idea of the masternode network is they have to prove they're available for service, so the source node must continue to ping the network.

What you're talking about could be a feature for later on in the future. But I haven't had time to implement something like that yet.

How to know for sure whether your masternode is actually working?
If you can see it here: http://drk.poolhash.org/masternode.html it's a pretty good sign. But even there, mine come and go a bit, or have done, seem steady at the moment.

Apparently my nodes are not working ok, they were on the http://darkcoin.io/masternodes.txt list for an hour or so, but have now been removed. And only one of the nodes is on http://drk.poolhash.org/masternode.html

In the local/remote masternode configuration, are you supposed to do "masternode genkey" on both wallets, remote and local? And then place the key gotten from remote wallet to remote wallet's .conf, and the key gotten from local wallet to local wallet's .conf?

I tried to read minotaur's post about it but it's not clear how it's supposed to be.

I think Eduffield is going to have to clarify, because, two of my nodes show on the list and two are not showing anymore after  a couple of hours. I used separate keys. I am not sure if that is it, or if they expire after some time because the local wallet is offline. I am sure they start fine and I can see them for some time on the masternode.txt. Without clarification from Evan is hard to know. I will wait to see what happens and try a couple of nodes with the same key to see if they  stick that way.

I just checked the list myself. My masternode is no longer showing up. With the local client returning Masternode count 11.

Try shutting down your node, setting maxconnections a bit higher, then wait ten minutes and start it up again (there's good reason to wait 10 minutes). We should all start getting in sync sometime soon, it looks like the network is updating:

It looks like the masternode count has been inflated due to a bug in the old protocol. My guess is we have less than 50 masternodes (currently I see 34 active). This also means it's suddenly very profitable to run a masternode again.

50x Masternodes = (576/50) blocks * 10% of the reward = 7.7DRK/day

7.7DRK * $6.64 = $51.13/DAY

Masternode cost = $6640, so that's 281% ROI per year.

Run a masternode or having trouble syncing the masternode list? Please update: https://darkcointalk.org/threads/update-to-0-9-4-4-or-0-10-8-4-to-prepare-for-the-hardfork-on-may-25.712/page-2#post-4304

Some way of confirming for sure that your masternode was kosher would be good.

edit, just updated to latest 10.8.5 (same download link everyone!) - looking very good indeed!

Here's what darkpool sees: http://darkcoin.io/masternodes.txt

I also see 34.
So...

34x Masternodes = (576/34) blocks * 10% of the reward = 11.3DRK/day? ROI roughly every 3 months!? Cool

...until more people rush to buy DRK for masternodes...

Those 170 are coming back, I can almost guarantee it. I think by the end of the month 250+ nodes will be operating. Everyone (me included) is waiting for payments. I haven't started mine back up as it was costing me money while providing no income.

That's a good point, they were probably just testing to make sure their setup worked (and then they stayed in the list due to the bug).

Anyone know why one of my masternodes thinks there are 30 MNs and the other thinks there are 50?

Also, the one that sees 30 MNs shows both of mine in its list.  The one that sees 50 MNs shows itself in its list, but it doesn't show my other one.

WTF?

Does anyone else show both 93.95.228.27:9999 and 93.95.228.131:9999?

Also in the MN list, what is the difference between
Code:
"xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:9999" : 0

and

Code:
"xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:9999" : 1

?
I can see both of mine on each of them but sometimes they are flagged 1 and sometimes 0. My qt wallet can only see MNs launched after it was. I can see neither of yours on either my MNs or from my local wallet.  Huh

edit: MN count on both my MNs is 45 right now.

The old and new masternode protocol are completely different and everyone needs to update first. The messages aren't getting propagated at the moment. In a couple days, we'll have accurate counts and the nodes will stay online. Like I said in the update, all of the masternodes will have to restart later. That's why.

When DRK hits $100 a masternode will be worth 100,000 bucks
Who will risk running such a server besides security geniuses?

Could this become an issue. will future masternodes require less DRK?

Evan said he is not considering lowering the DRK requirement for masternode. 1000DRK is reasonable enough and will make the 51% attack harder in the end

What we need next is someone with some programming talent to make a site like a pool, but you buy shares of a masternode. So when masternodes are much more expensive, they could still be divided down to a reasonable level. This would also allow someone who was not computer savvy to invest in masternodes, which is optimal.

I suggest the software not be based on anything existing, so it could become a darkcoin advantage over the competition. It seems pretty simple though, you buy shares for 1DRK, then it has some screens for stats and it pays out dividends much like MPOS.

Would that not in a way centralise the masternodes?

I don't think so, you share only one masternode in a server not all of them.

Plus, remember the people that have 1000 drk plus will set up their masternodes regardless without the use of such a service. So the idea will only add to the total number of masternodes. Ergo, decentralization will be as good as it was without this multipool type masternode service maybe a little better.

I think we'll always have 70-80% of the masternodes operated by individuals even after they're really expensive to run. But when they get that expensive, it would be nice to have some kind of alternative for investors/supporters. It also increases the overall capitalization of the masternode network, which is really good for the coin. Otherwise this is going to become something just for large investors really quick, so I think it's a good compromise.

PS, masternode centralization in the future doesn't cause any problems for darkcoin. I have 2 possible solutions to evaluate for V2 of darksend (ring signatures and encrypted system where the users themselves do the joining relayed through the masternodes.) . Both of these make the masternodes unaware of who is sending money to whom, so centralization isn't an issue at that point.

Old schedule...

- RC2 (magic numbers changed to darkcoin, DGW3) : May 14th
- RC2 (masternode payments) : May 25th
- RC3 (10 DRK limit and denominated change) : June 14th
- After this, I'll find someone to vet the code and open source.
- RC4 (Bugs, security issues)
- Testing, then opensource

The masternode issues and the 3rd fork for the 25th actually messed up the schedule. I've been rewriting much of the code masternode technology (released yesterday, if you haven't updated please do!)

There's still some oddities with the election voting system that I'm going to tackle this next week. This I'll start working again on RC3 .

With last version (0.9.4.2) I get 19 masternodes, with the previous one (0.9.whatever) I got 179. Whats wrong?

The new code for masternode messaging isn't backwards compatible, so while the network switches over we'll have low counts.

Are Darkcoins logos and images copyrighted?
Is there a problem with using the logo on shirts, physical coins etc to sell at cost price?
It'd be cool to see a physical coin

Technically, anything is copyrighted the second it is created.

I created the current 3D coin graphic.  And I would not really appreciate someone selling shirts of it.
Though I don't mind people using it virtually/on-line for an icon or website. That's what it's for.
But selling completely for it's "graphic value", like on a t-shirt, would bug me.

You'd have to ask Evan or somebody official about the D logo itself.
Evan and/or Darkcoin Foundation own that. It was contracted and paid for thru DesignCrowd.

I was thinking of doing some shirts with it myself since I have a nice super hi-res version and can make variations.
But I haven't heard anything back from a similar inquiry (about t-shirts) to Evan.

Fair enough, was more interested in the D logo tbh
Thanks for the response and your work looks awesome Smiley

Everything the Darkcoin community bought (the logo and everything else) belongs to the darkcoin community. As for Enzwell's graphics? I figured that would have been covered by the boundy we paid.

2. DGW is another correction of something that already exists. It's just a rebalance of something that was not fast enough at what it was doing. I can't be sure on this point because I haven't bothered to read the code yet, but I suspect this is true.

DGW is not based on anything. I used the same strategies used in financial modeling to model the difficulty and provide a good fit.

Code:
unsigned int static DarkGravityWave3(const CBlockIndex* pindexLast, const CBlockHeader *pblock) {
    /* current difficulty formula, darkcoin - DarkGravity v3, written by Evan Duffield - evan@darkcoin.io */
    const CBlockIndex *BlockLastSolved = pindexLast;
    const CBlockIndex *BlockReading = pindexLast;
    const CBlockHeader *BlockCreating = pblock;
    BlockCreating = BlockCreating;
    int64 nActualTimespan = 0;
    int64 LastBlockTime = 0;
    int64 PastBlocksMin = 24;
    int64 PastBlocksMax = 24;
    int64 CountBlocks = 0;
    CBigNum PastDifficultyAverage;
    CBigNum PastDifficultyAveragePrev;

    if (BlockLastSolved == NULL || BlockLastSolved->nHeight == 0 || BlockLastSolved->nHeight < PastBlocksMin) {
        return bnProofOfWorkLimit.GetCompact();
    }

    for (unsigned int i = 1; BlockReading && BlockReading->nHeight > 0; i++) {
        if (PastBlocksMax > 0 && i > PastBlocksMax) { break; }
        CountBlocks++;

        if(CountBlocks <= PastBlocksMin) {
            if (CountBlocks == 1) { PastDifficultyAverage.SetCompact(BlockReading->nBits); }
            else { PastDifficultyAverage = ((PastDifficultyAveragePrev * CountBlocks)+(CBigNum().SetCompact(BlockReading->nBits))) / (CountBlocks+1); }
            PastDifficultyAveragePrev = PastDifficultyAverage;
        }

        if(LastBlockTime > 0){
            int64 Diff = (LastBlockTime - BlockReading->GetBlockTime());
            nActualTimespan += Diff;
        }
        LastBlockTime = BlockReading->GetBlockTime();

        if (BlockReading->pprev == NULL) { assert(BlockReading); break; }
        BlockReading = BlockReading->pprev;
    }

    CBigNum bnNew(PastDifficultyAverage);

    int64 nTargetTimespan = CountBlocks*nTargetSpacing;

    if (nActualTimespan < nTargetTimespan/3)
        nActualTimespan = nTargetTimespan/3;
    if (nActualTimespan > nTargetTimespan*3)
        nActualTimespan = nTargetTimespan*3;

    // Retarget
    bnNew *= nActualTimespan;
    bnNew /= nTargetTimespan;

    if (bnNew > bnProofOfWorkLimit){
        bnNew = bnProofOfWorkLimit;
    }

    return bnNew.GetCompact();
}

Help test masternode payments!

Do you know how to setup NOMP with the patch for masternode payments? I could use the help in testing to make sure the voting system is working properly.

Please jump in this thread for more information about testing:

https://darkcointalk.org/threads/rc2-testing-with-pool-support.353/

If you do get it working, please email evan@darkcoin.io so I can checkout the blocks you're creating.

Thanks!
