561  Other / Off-topic / Re: Best VPN's using Bitcoin? on: November 01, 2013, 06:15:01 PM
I think a large number of people use VPN to access services blocked by the country they live in.

563  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does running Bitcoin QT make you a target for hackers? on: November 01, 2013, 08:55:00 AM
I think your logic is generally correct. That's why a lot of people will suggest keeping larger value wallets off-line.

I don't fully understand the Bitcoin network, but wouldn't running QT leave you vulnerable to the below scenario?

Step 1: I decide to become an evil hacker, so I learn how to hack.
Step 2: I run a modified version of the QT client, which prints out a list of all the other nodes on the bitcoin network that are visible to me.
Step 3: I take my big list of IP addresses, and using my logical skills I deduce that a lot of those IPs correspond to machines with bitcoin wallets on them.
Step 4: I try to penetrate as many of the machines with those IPs as possible, install keyloggers on any that I can break into, and grab any wallets that I can find.
Step 5: Profit?

What's the flaw in my plan? Is step 4 just extremely hard?

567  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: So I got a hotdog stand accepting bitcoin at the school trade fair... on: October 31, 2013, 08:01:34 PM
good job! I could really see bitcoin being good for the youth. I remember when I was a young teen, I would have loved to find a way to get paid online, but it was so hard without a credit card or bank account.
568  Other / Off-topic / Re: Paypal canceled my account and holding all my funds because I was selling miners on: October 30, 2013, 06:32:39 PM
I don't know how to help you here, but I've quit using paypal awhile ago because they were always locking my account.
569  Other / Politics & Society / Re: No Woman, No Drive on: October 30, 2013, 06:25:22 PM
pretty funny and well done. I'm guessing he making fun of the women driving ban in Syria or wherever they have that sort of thing.
570  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining on another planet. Possible? on: October 30, 2013, 06:11:22 PM
Maybe the best solution would be to have another coin just for Mars, then there could be a rather slow trade market.
571  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Way to heat my bedroom? on: October 30, 2013, 06:09:02 PM
of course mining for heat isn't going to be an efficient way of heating, but maybe you could make a sound proofish box for the GPU miner?
572  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Made a physical Bitcoin tip jar (Youtube) on: October 30, 2013, 05:40:06 PM
Yeah I will for sure, if I end up doing something with it. I'm an IT project manager, I've have various technical jobs in the past, but even still this raspberry pi stuff is a nice challenge. You can see some of the other projects I'm working on or thinking about working on here. ecurb.info

574  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What altcoins do u hold? on: October 29, 2013, 09:22:05 PM
mostly PPC, LTC and TRC

have a few others which are pretty much not worth anything at all.
575  Bitcoin / Press / Re: Five Reasons For Bitcoin's Most Recent Price Surge - Forbes on: October 29, 2013, 09:08:03 PM
Do we really think that taking the 26k BTC out really changed the market price?
576  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Made a physical Bitcoin tip jar (Youtube) on: October 29, 2013, 08:53:06 PM
Also looks like your code is way different than mine, I'm also new to development so I'm going to check out the code closer tomorrow when I get a chance.
Hey, I replied to you on Youtube. Your idea is pretty cool. It's definitely nothing that I imagined in implementation, but as far as what our ideas do, things seem pretty similar. I actually don't have the code for the tip jar uploaded yet. What is on Github is the code for the notifications Chrome extension, which is a totally unrelated project (though works similarly).

Ah yeah I see now. But when you get a chance I'd like to see the code. While I was driving to work today I was thinking about making a fully contained wallet, meaning with the full blockchain on it. It would be like a physical hardware wallet. I could see it being able to send a receive coins.
577  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What do you think is the best form to gift BTC? on: October 29, 2013, 08:45:29 PM
I'd suggest avoiding Bitcoin as a gift unless they are already into it or are very curious. Considering the difficulty in finding somewhere to spend it or to convert it to fiat, it will most likely become lost coins and not really be appreciated.

I don't think so, I think it's easy to spend BTC, really there are sites everywhere taking BTC, it's just too hard to get bitcoin.
578  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What do you think is the best form to gift BTC? on: October 29, 2013, 08:44:14 PM
This is a cool idea I might think about doing it too. But I think a nicely made paper wallet with instructions would be really cool.
579  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin the enabler - Truly Autonomous Software Agents roaming the net on: October 29, 2013, 08:36:41 PM
I could see this being a fiction book.
