501  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Gomez Peer on: July 26, 2011, 09:18:09 PM
It takes literally months before Gomez accepts your account to pay (it did for me anyways a few years ago when I started).  They pay me now, but using your CPU would be be spent doing bitcoins.  also Gomez sucks up your bandwidth, too, in case you have to pay for that as well.

502  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Someone keeps sending me BTC - what do? on: July 26, 2011, 08:53:18 PM
Hello guys,

I've been mining for some months now and use Bitmarket for my trades.
Since 14th of June, someone keeps sending me BTC to my Bitmarket account... it's around 172.8 right now, from the person (I did not trade it yet).

Some days there are no funds incoming, on others 3-5/day ... always like "5,65" or "0,38" - those kinda payments.

Where do they come from and why should someone do that? It makes me feel uneasy not to know where it comes from...

Plus 172 BTC isn't too less money, is it?

If you don't want them, I"ll take them!  address in my signature!
503  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: an old fashioned ghetto-off! (and lolz) on: July 26, 2011, 02:20:00 PM
The last respectable charts I saw said that all CPU miners except maybe an ARM chip (which wasn't on any chart) and most Nvidia cards don't beat the cost of electricity.  So if you use it as a creative, efficient, helpful way to heat that room then that's cool.  Otherwise it's not exactly worth it.

I've been doing distributed networking projects for years, so the "waste" of the electricity for me wouldn't be a big deal, since I got *zero* return on my CPU usage for those.   So, while informative, and I thank you for that, it will fall on deaf ears Smiley
504  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Is "casual" mining still sustainable? Is buying a new rig stupid? on: July 25, 2011, 08:22:47 PM
My wife let me purchase X dollars worth of gaming machine last year, and won't let me purchase anything new for a few more years.  So bitcoins aren't "real money" to her, and thusly anything I mine is positive gain.

I don't begrudge the hardcore miners, shit if I was single I'd be doing exactly that.  So if you're in a boat similar to mine, just get what you want, and don't feel bad.  If the bitcoin economy crashes, you still have a nice gaming rig for enjoyment.  Smiley

Don't take this the wrong way, but I've never understood how a guy could let his wife control the finances of the household. Even if she does the budget and bills how can you put your manhood in a drawer and have her dictate what you do with the money you make from work? My wife and I have always had separate finances. It keeps things really stable because I make a lot more than she does (about 3x) and I spend my free money on all kinds of toys, she spends her money on girl things, and neither of us can bitch and moan about what the other person is spending money on. I pay the bills and she gives me a percentage of the total monthly cost of living (rent, food, heat, electric, etc) which we determine by the income distribution. So basically, I pay 3/4 of the bills and she pays 1/4 because I make 3/4 of the household income. Everyone wins and no one has to limit what toys they are "allowed" to buy. I strongly recommend this method, it makes for a very respectful and stable relationship.

I keep trying to get her to adopt that method, too, but honestly, we both recognize that without checks and balances, we'd probably have no money tied up in savings.  At least this way we have some back-up money (and we have children, so that eats up a ton of money).

Without this method, I'd spend my extra cash on strippers and weed Wink
505  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Is "casual" mining still sustainable? Is buying a new rig stupid? on: July 25, 2011, 07:44:12 PM
I have a "casual" rig, and I'm using bitcoins to (slowly) build up a gaming rig.

You see, (and I pointed this out in a different thread) my casual rig is starting from a net value of "zero" as in "not in debt", because I look at it like this:  My wife let me purchase X dollars worth of gaming machine last year, and won't let me purchase anything new for a few more years.  So bitcoins aren't "real money" to her, and thusly anything I mine is positive gain.

I bought a second 5770 with bitcoins.  I just purchased a Corsair 800D case (I need it for cooling future cards since my other case sucks) and will continue to slowly piecemeal together a nice gaming rig.

So I'm the true "casual" guy.  I'm not in it for big gains (although it'd be nice), I just want to fund a nice gaming rig that stays ahead of the casual gamer's curve in terms of performance.  So a pair of 6990s (or whatever the equivalent is when I finally get $600 or $700 worth of coins) will be my next purchase, and then we'll see after that. Smiley

506  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: an old fashioned ghetto-off! (and lolz) on: July 25, 2011, 07:20:27 PM
Once my "man cave" is complete, I plan on trying to get my old Power Mac 8600 back up and running with OS 10.(whatever will run on it (it did have 10.1 before I had to shut 'er down due to space)) and seeing if I can't get a CPU miner working, just for shits and grins.

I'm also hoping someone gets really bored and makes a CPU miner that works on the 68020 processor, and I'll see if my Mac LC that has A/UX on it to behave (although I've forgotten root password, and don't have installers anymore, so that will be fun to try to even get logged in).

If someone made a CPU miner that ran on System 7 (or 8 or 9) that would totally rock, too.
507  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: You know when you are bitcoin miner when... on: July 25, 2011, 06:32:08 PM
When your computer sits "idle" (because you're mining) instead of gaming all day like before, and you can hang out with your wife more, she wonders who this person is and where'd he put her husband? Smiley
508  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are bitcoins your dirty little secret? on: July 25, 2011, 06:26:18 PM
I imagine bitcoins could be convenient in a lot of households where someone shares a bank account and/or credit card and would rather not raise unnecessary discussions by using them for online purchases.

You just described the second reason I got into them Smiley
509  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Gomez Peer + Bitcoin Mining = Success! on: July 25, 2011, 06:04:57 PM
Gomez also sucks down a lot of bandwidth, and if you're like me, and have to pay for it, you end up losing money.
I stopped doing Gomez as soon as I discovered bitcoins Smiley
510  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Are bitcoins your dirty little secret? on: July 25, 2011, 06:03:41 PM
And I mean in the context of your close friends/relatives, I don't mean here, since we obviously know you're into bitcoins.

I'm getting at... have you told your friends/family about bitcoins?  Or, like me, do you just avoid doing so because of the weird looks/questions that you're going to get?

Case in point, I told my wife, tried to explain about them, and I got stares, and then, "Have you bought any with our money yet?"
"No, I just mine them, and it costs a little bit more electricity than normal."  [tonto's note, just a few dollars a month since they're 5770s]
"Well whatever, just don't spend any of our money on them."

And then the other day when I used some to buy a new Corsair case on newegg, she asks, "So how much did this cost again?"
"None, I used bitcoins to buy them."
"Hmmm, so you didn't use any of our money to buy that?"
"Nope."
"oh ok"

And that's all that's ever spoke on it.  So I just avoid it now.  If any of my friends ever tell me (or I overhear them speaking) that they're into bitcoins, I'll tell them, otherwise mum's the word!
511  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Time To Stop Mining? on: July 21, 2011, 03:34:59 PM
I don't mine because I don't want to wear my card out for Battlefield 3.

I'm hoping to make enough from Bitcoin to be able to have a dedicated rig with a 6990 ready for when BF3 comes out. The games going to be kickass IMO.

As for not mining, I can't stop - I'm well addicted now.  Tongue

I'm also using my bitcoins to (slooowly) build up a good gaming rig.  I got the case (corsair 800d), and now working towards a 6990 (or two, depending on how well bitcoins do later in the year).  I was never in it to profit (plus I didn't get into bitcoins until May).  Just for some casual cash to buy computer crap that my wife won't let me buy.

She doesn't see the few extra cents per month in electricity, and also doesn't see any unusual credit card purchases (thanks to newegg gift cards purchased via bitcoins) Smiley

I'll admit I should have got the 6990 first before the case (so that I could earn more bitcoins to make this faster)... but my current case can barely keep my 5770s cool, so I needed to get that first.

After 6990s will come some SSDs Smiley

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

I just used this site last night, and it was 100% perfect.

Will use again, thanks Smiley

+1

oh, and my amount wasn't huge, but enough to make me nervous for my first-time:  $150.
But went smoothly.
515  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Worlds First Bitcoin Tattoo [NSFW] on: July 13, 2011, 03:32:31 PM

Some people work hard to keep a nice body. I hardly see how it is rude to acknowledge the fact...

I'm not sure if you've ever actually been with a girl, but a lot of them like to be told that they're bodies are sexy, awesome, pretty, gorgeous, hot, whatever. Maybe it is sexist in some fucked up way, but they like it.

Haha, yes.  For the naysayers and politically correct "modern day" feminists (usually male) who maintain that looks don't (or shouldn't) matter, go ahead and tell your mom/wife/girlfriend that her body and looks don't matter or appeal to you, and that you'd rather look at a puddle of mud.... and then report back here on how far that gets you...

Fact is, half the population (male) are biologically programmed as visual creatures.  The other half (male) are programmed to advertise those looks for the look-ees.  Is it right?  That's not for me to determine.  Does personality count?  Of course it does, and can sway a physically "hot" woman into not looking so hot after all, or can sway a not very attractive physically woman into being very beautiful.

But fact is, we're all programmed, so just roll with it!

Hot. That is all.

If I had sex with that woman, I could then die a happy man
517  Other / Off-topic / Re: College American Football thread! on: July 13, 2011, 03:04:24 AM
am I the only football fan on this board???  Or maybe off-topic isn't read as much? Smiley
518  Economy / Goods / Re: new real tangible physical bitcoin coin on: July 12, 2011, 03:31:14 PM
Very cool idea.  I'm too bitcoin broke to buy one right now (saving up my minimal btc for a Corsair case), but I could see getting one of these and placing it in a Geocache here in Lawrence, KS Smiley
519  Other / Off-topic / College American Football thread! on: July 12, 2011, 01:30:29 PM
From my avatar, you might guess which team I'm a fan of.

Who else reading these forums is a fan of American Football!? (hereafter in this thread will be referred to as "football", and the rest of the world's football, if it comes up, will be referred to as "soccer"... please refrain from doing a soccer/football thread, or start your own soccer/football thread, let's keep this on topic).

So if any of you are football fans, post your team/mascot/whatever.  Go ahead and try to smack talk, too, if you dare. Wink

August is just around the corner!!!

Go Big Red!
520  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Sell me something! on: July 11, 2011, 09:35:15 PM
I have some Bitcoins I've been hoarding, and I think it's about time to unload them. So now it's your job, community, to sell me something!

Anything, anything at all! Make me an offer!

I will sell you one of my nose-hairs for 5btc.  This way you can start cloning me with my DNA found on said hair.
