1721  Economy / Economics / Re: Countries that followed the Austrian School to Prosperity on: July 28, 2011, 06:49:04 PM
Hyperbole goes both ways I guess if you think the Pinochet era was A REIGN OF TERROR!!1. Sure, he rounded up and killed, tortured and imprisoned his enemies but that's no different than what happens now in the world. Do you consider the United States a reign of terror because the administration likes to kill a lot of muslims and torture them in Guantanamo?

Of course I do! (think that the USG is guilty of mass murder and torture) - The US is a police state at home and a nightmare abroad if you happen to live in one of the countries they are currently targeting. The USG is quite literally the Evil Empire at the moment, with the highest rate of incarceration at home and more military spending than most of the rest of the world combined

The hidden hand of the market will never work without a hidden fist. McDonald's cannot flourish without McDonnell Douglas, the designer of the F-15. And the hidden fist that keeps the world safe for Silicon Valley's technologies to flourish is called the US Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps. (Tom Friedman, NYT persistent defender of US capitalism/globalization)

Of course the Pinochet regime was a reign of terror -- What else do you call it when a dictator assumes power in a military coup and systematically kills, imprisons, or destroys his political enemies, embezzles millions from the government, etc. Really, you have absolutely zero moral ground to stand on here if you are trying to make the case that Pinochet's regime was somehow "freer" or "more democratic" than Allende's

The irony, of course, is that the US armed forces are, in effect, socialist... i.e. state-funded and run.

As for the notion that Pinochet may not have been that bad after all... it takes a spectacular disconnect from history to even suggest something of the sort. I guess our friend thinks that Austrian economics is Austrian because that was the birthplace of Hitler... also not such a bad chap, after all.
1722  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Unicef donations on: July 28, 2011, 03:11:23 PM
I just wrote to Unicef asking if they'd start accepting bitcoin donations, along with a hyper-summarised description of what BTC are and how they can be either used or exchanged for paper currencies.

I'm pretty sure I'll either be ignored or will get a reply saying they have no intention of accepting BTC.

Does anyone know of a service where one can send bitcoins and they will relay them as a donation to the organisation of one's choice?

1725  Economy / Speculation / Re: Number of users connected to MtGox Live on: July 28, 2011, 12:43:51 PM
If you ask me, the whole dwolla/liberty reserve system is ridiculous in the first place. Why can't I go to my bank's website and just send the money to Mtgox, Tradehill,

That's how I do it. Direct to MtGox (well via Technocash) from ING Direct online Bank account. Funds arrive within 24 hours.  Grin

Oh, so that option DOES exist for Americans as well? I thought it was just for Canadians through Virtex and Europeans through Sepa transfers... good to know.
1726  Economy / Economics / Re: Countries that followed the Austrian School to Prosperity on: July 28, 2011, 12:41:15 PM
hoooly shit. i can't believe JohnDoe is seriously pointing to Chile as a free market success story. Are all libertarians creeping authoritarian fascists or just this one? (yes yes, I know you're not all secret authoritarians, but really there need to be more AnCaps in this thread denouncing Chile wholeheartedly as it is about as far from a voluntary society as you can get) For god's sake I realize that a dictatorship is a "smaller government" than a democracy, but each step towards smallness is not the same folks. You are as bad as Communists that defend Stalin or Mao.

First, we are talking purely economic policies here. How those economic policies came to be is not relevant to the discussion. And second, you probably don't get the context. Chile was in very deep shit before the coup so I believe the means justify the end on this one.

Tell me honestly, would you rather live in countries like Zimbabwe and North Korea, or in Nazi Germany pre WWII? I'm as anarchist as one can get but I'd choose the latter any day. At least there you are still permitted to have property and wealth and you won't die of hunger.

I'd rather live in Sweden... or Holland... or Belgium... or Norway... or Canada... oh, hang on, I do live in Canada, goodie :-)
1727  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TradeHill - Why we no longer accept Dwolla and an open letter to Ben Milne on: July 28, 2011, 01:28:57 AM
Aside from everything else, Tradehill found itself in the unenviable position of having to choose between their customers and one of their main sources of funding... I for one applaud them for their choice of loyalty.
1728  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: trading btc for cad on: July 27, 2011, 10:33:52 PM
im wondering what is the best root to trade, my bit coins for some canadien money, I have both paypal and visa debit card thing, I"d love to pay my bills with my bit-coins, and I finly got my first bit-coin though all of my mining,

Ive been looking at the us prices and it ranges between 13usd to 15usd, so I asume because the cad is higher at the moment I could get between 14-17 or soething like that, if im right,

I"m just very new to this whole thing

By far the easiest is Virtex (www.cavirtex.com), and no, I'm in no way associated with them.

cheers,
1729  Economy / Speculation / Re: Number of users connected to MtGox Live on: July 27, 2011, 04:19:36 PM
i think less Dwolla pricier BTC because it will be more expensive using other means for exchange

compare rates of loading Dwolla and moving to exchange for instance with loading exchange through Liberty Reserve, wire, etc., those transfer and exchange fees would reflect price of BTC

Yup, that's why I said initially... give it a few days and people will find a way around it. If you ask me, the whole dwolla/liberty reserve system is ridiculous in the first place. Why can't I go to my bank's website and just send the money to Mtgox, Tradehill, CampBX, the same way I do with Virtex, is just beyond me.
1730  Economy / Economics / Re: Africa is the ingenuity capital of the world in banking and currency transfer on: July 27, 2011, 03:36:40 PM
If Africa is so ingenious about banking and currency transfer, why do I keep getting Emails from relatives of dead African generals and/or political figures who can't seem to get their $40-100M USD out of an account and need MY help?

To hold THAT much money, the phones obviously have to be very big and heavy. Two person job to lift them and carry them out of the country.

Perhaps we should start replying to all those emails that they should convert those millions into BTC and then we'll help them get those out of the country.
1731  Economy / Speculation / Re: Number of users connected to MtGox Live on: July 27, 2011, 03:34:34 PM
I never thought about this, but the bitcoin price is probably largely based on Dwolla.

less dwolla -> higher BTC price ?

Nope. Less dwolla -> less money available to buy BTC -> more people willing to sell BTC for less -> lower BTC price... at least initially. Same way that no euros in MtGox means lower prices across the board.

Put another way: less dwolla -> higher dwolla price.
1732  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Where are you buying your BitCoins on: July 23, 2011, 02:58:48 AM

Not working for nor in any way associated with Virtex

Thanks for the response. I do wonder where you will be getting that first class private treatment in the Canadian healthcare system, but that's another topic.

What are the fees like with Virtex? You have about $1.50 with each Interac email transaction, what else is there on top of that?

Actually, my bank just lowered the interac fee to $1.00, and Virtex charges .59% per transaction ( I think). They cap you at $5,000. So if you transfer the max, the $1.00 fee is very low.

Cheers.
1733  Economy / Trading Discussion / Bitcoinity chart question on: July 22, 2011, 02:51:09 PM
Hey gang:

I'm confused by the colour bars on the cumulative depth chart on bitcoinity. The WTF link opens up an explanation that says:

"About these bars going up and down (if there are any at the moment). They show market depth changes over the last 10 minutes. The value axis for them is on the right BTC. Bars on the left of the current price are bid offer changes, and on the right ask offer changes. So if somebody is adding a bid offer, you will see a green bar on the left. About colors: if bids are added they are in green, and when removed they are in red. For asks it's the opposite. That's because when somebody is adding an ask, it makes it harder for the price to go up. If somebody is removing an ask it's easier for it to go down."

Now, the way I read that, if the bar is on the left of the current price, it should be green when it's going up and red when it's going down, and the other way around for bars to the right of the current price.

But there are green and red bars both into the positive and negative on BOTH sides of the current price. So clearly I'm not getting the colour reference here. Would someone with a higher trade IQ please explain this to me.

Thanks,
1734  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Where are you buying your BitCoins on: July 22, 2011, 12:59:14 PM
If you're lucky enough to live in Canada, or have a bank account here, you just open an account with Virtex, do an interac email transfer from your bank to them and in a couple hours tops you can be buying your BTC.

I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt and assume you're not working for Virtex. Mind giving your impressions on what makes it superior to MtGox/others for Soviet Canuckistans?

Not working for nor in any way associated with Virtex here. Primarily, what makes it superior is that I can fund my account from my Iphone, on my way to work, and by the time I make it to work the money is usually there and I can start trading. That isn't necessarily due to Virtex itself, but to the fact that Canadian banks have a system called Interac email transfer, which makes it much faster than, in my experience, MtGox/others.

Their interface could improve, IMO. But if the question is where to BUY bitcoins, as opposed to where to engage in day trading of bitcoins, for anyone in Canada the answer is pretty clear.

And if I get into a car crash while funding my account on my iPhone, I will be rushed to the hospital, get first class treatment and when I'm healthy again will walk out of the hospital and never see a bill... so yes, if you're lucky enough to live in Canada :-)
1735  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Death and bitcoin wills on: July 22, 2011, 12:35:40 PM
Try ownlegacy.com... I was thinking of starting a similar service about a year ago. It will allow you to create a legacy that, upon your death, can be bequeathed to your loved ones. That could very well be an encrypted wallet.dat file and instructions on what to do with it.
1736  Economy / Speculation / Re: What do you think will happen to the price when the blocks drop to 25 coins each on: July 22, 2011, 02:25:21 AM
It likely won't change

Current investors don't seem to understand less supply = higher price

At the current difficulty the supply of mined bitcoins has dwindled waaaay down and yet the price has been more or less the same or just going down...when it gets reduced to 25 BTC I doubt anyone is going to pay attention. So all miners are screwed.

Doesn't the total supply remain constant, and the difficulty corrects for the number of miners?

1739  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TurboTax advertises Bitcoin as a tax dodge! on: July 21, 2011, 03:31:08 PM
I'm not so sure... and I'm also not too savvy on the differences between tax law in the US vs. Canada and Europe. But suppose I'm on vacation in Brazil and I buy an amethyst necklace for 20 USD. Then, a few weeks later, someone discovers the cure for cancer that requires amethyst and suddenly a gramme of it rises in price to several thousand dollars. Technically, it makes me a millionaire, but for tax purposes, at least in Canada, I wouldn't have to declare it till I started selling the amethyst gramme by gramme... and then I'd only have to declare it as income derived from the appreciation of an asset. The necklace itself would still be tax free... if I moved away from Canada, whatever bits of the necklace I still kept would still be tax free, etc.
