Let's start by making myself a little less popular by saying: the altcoin scene will die in 2016 But we have to be realistic about it... They are too easy to generate, there are too many to even keep up with the launches, they don't seem to offer (much) improvement over Bitcoin and end up being a complete waste of time and money. Even established coins like Litecoin will have a tough time surviving since they offer nothing but being "another clone of Bitcoin with some fancy algo that wasn't GPU and ASIC proof after all".
Are there any exceptions? Yes, there are! Coins that offer unique decentralized services, "Blockchain 2.0" or other disrupting technology will be the buy-and-holds for 2016.
Some examples?- Ethereum | Decentralized software & smart contracts on the blockchain - Factom | Honesty to record-keeping - Voxelus | Virtual Reality without coding - Radium | Decentralized Services on the smartchain - Synereo (AMP) | Decentralized social network - Sia | Decentralized storage So...
