Is now a good time to buy XMR or do you guys think it will come down some and offer a better entry.

I suggest you seek professional financial advice from someone licensed to do such a thing.

With all the experience on this thread I thought that's what I was doing.
 Wink

Picked up a few k though. Hope it pays off.

Experienced != Legally Licensed to give financial advice.

Legally Licensed to give financial advice != even remotely competent to do so.

And no one can really be the judge of that.

Coming into this thread seeking financial advice in my view is very flawed. That was my point.
1042  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: August 21, 2016, 09:15:18 PM
What I am anticipating (which no one can 100% accurately predict) is when will there be the first big XMR theft or hack. This could mean that Poloniex or another exchange or marketplace gets hacked (not saying they will, but it has a > 0% chance of happening).

That could be an interesting precedent in how the economy/law enforcement etc react to such a theft/hack.

Up until now there hasn't been "news-worthy" hacks/thefts of XMR...yet.

I suspect it will happen sooner or later and price may or may not take a dump. From past experience all hacks are followed with price dumps.

Probably after monero has a bull run will it be worth a hacker stealing some XMR.

All just speculation for now...

No different than ETH being on Poloniex and going through a rise. Polo has not been hacked in recent times. Back in the day yes. But not in the past couple years. I highly doubt a hack will come to a big exchange. I have been watching XMR for years and I really think this coin can do well. DNM adoption is big time deal...if AlphaBay does follow...this is unprecedented news. This could be the first truly private currency we have ever had. - BTC was the first decentralized digital currency and solves many issues. Monero solves privacy. - dash may be private to some extent and may have a place in the future....but XMR if used by the blackmarket will be an obvious powerhouse. If a vendor knows the fundamentals of this currency and transacts in it if he/she were smart they would also hold /store their wealth in XMR. - cash out to BTC / DASH when needed....  buying XMR now could potentially be a massive discount on product across all DNM's in the future if they all adopt it. SO early supporters of XMR will have firesale discounts on products across the dark web.

- Also I know XMR is in no way associated with the DarkNET....just pointing out that this will benefit the currency. Also give it more value as their is a major economy now behind it.

Privacy features in a crypto currency do not negate the ability/possibility for thefts/hacks.

Bitfinex is just the most recent exchange hack of the long list of hacks and thefts. XMR can have the same type of events happen. I do not see how you could highly doubt a big exchange could be hacked.

Dude why donīt you just come up into the IRC and ask the questions directly, instead of hoping fluffy is tripping over them here. And if he is not there maybe someone else is capable of answering you

Tripping over them? What? We were in the middle of a conversation and I waited a week for him to answer before I even bumped it. XMR started here and it's where I go to talk about it. And apparently no-one else wanted to address the issue.

Stop acting like i kicked your dog, someone asked a question and I answered honestly. That is all I have done the years I have been posting here. I also prefer to have my questions answered in the main thread as it is a good repository I can search. I hate keeping logs.

I'm fairly certain if you were willing to go out of your way to get the answers to questions you have, you would already have answers. There are other means of communicating than this forum.
1046  Economy / Collectibles / Re: ❎ [SALES OPEN] LEALANA PHYSICAL SILVER MONERO (XMR) - 3-coin sets~ ⭕️ on: August 20, 2016, 01:42:28 PM

Hey smoothie,

Is this still the plan for the end run/long term? Thank you.

Quote
Maximum Mintage: 250 of each coin type

So will there ever be a number higher than 250 on the coin?

How many sets are you planning to auction? I know this is just 12 so far, but are you planning on just keeping this up until a certain number or how have you been dealing with the demand so far? Thanks again. Smiley

Max mintage of sets is static at 250 sets.

Yes the highest number ever to be on a set will be 250.

I have not decided on how many sets I plan to auction. In fact, I don't think I even know as I do not pre-plan them out with the exception of the initial two auctions of sets #1 thru #10. When I put out auctions it is kind of a random thing when there is an open moment to post one.

Hope that helps.

1049  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: August 18, 2016, 08:39:32 PM
You know what's crazy?  The other day, if someone wanted to market buy 1% of all initial Monero, they could have acquired 184k Monero and the price would have only increased to about 450k satoshi.

Now they practically can't even do that.  The price would increase to nearly 900k satoshi if they tried.

But...this is not a static market. What is true now is not necessarily true tomorrow.

I like the take it as it comes approach. Focus on the development side and economy side rather than charts and prices. Kind of like a 90/10 split 90% economy/dev focus/reading/etc, 10% glue my eyeballs to the chart screen.

--snip
He combines the keys, he already has the public address which is either funded or not (his choice), I do up some final work on the item to have the public key and voila, I shop it out and they have a completely secure address.

This sounds like a little more effort on my part and the client's part but I think if anyone is going to 'trust' me, that's going to be the best way (mainly because then you don't have to trust me).
--snip

Of course if they don't want it funded and never really care about funding it then this is irrelevant, they pay their base price to an escrow or myself and it's shipped out.

First of all I have a lot of respect for that you come out and not just assuming that everyone should trust you, "just" because you are making a coin.
I am sometimes surprised about how people are willing to trust new coin producer with their bitcoins, I am not talking about payment but the security of the private key.
When you confront a coin maker about the security, they always say something along the line: all private keys are destroyed, but there are never any kind of clear manifest about the procedure.

I personally think it is reckless to trust a random person with a private key containing anything more than a few bitcents - especially taking the coingraphic indecent into consideration.

The thing that makes a physical crypto coin unique is that it has a private key and it was funded at some point, which is documented in the blockchain.
From this point of view does it not make any difference if it is funded with 1 BTC or 0.01 BTC, however funding the coin with 0.01 BTC reduce the risk significantly for both buyer and producer.

The idea about 2FA or the buyers creates part of the private key takes the risk away from the producer, but it kills the 2nd market for the coin, instead of solely trusting the producer, then will you have to trust the 1st buyer as well, if the passphrase or partly private key is flawed then can the funds never be redeemed by any subsequent buyer.

TL;DR: I like small denominations best (0.01 - 0.05), private key created by producer with a clear manifest of how private keys are handled and destroyed, for the reasons stated above.

These are some very wise words ^

Be cautious when purchasing physical coins and do your research ahead of time.

1056  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Bitfinex HACKED - funds stolen ! on: August 10, 2016, 08:30:39 PM
if they had 90% BTC Offline cold storage this would not have happened, are people seriously that dumb. Stuff your tokens Btc is what we want tokens are for toking on because you got all the BTC. Sound like Bitstamp shut down lots of accounts took their funds like stealing stole BTC and sent it all to bitfinex to try to camoflauge it. And open multiple accounts from all the Bitstamp KYC policy send verification while they blackmail your deposits, trading with your money making money from your loss. And they try to pretend to be russian but from the grammar they use when they speak they are not suka bleyt at all no nordcore radio, no kotzaak nothing. i can tell in the name spelling they dont grasp english grammar properly and spell their russian looking names with indian spelling because they never bothered to learn another language they are so lazy.
When bitstamps volume decreassed bitfinex when through the roof all that BTC had to go somewhere. And they release customers private verification details to US federal marshals and seize bitcoin accounts later selling the accounts to the federal marshals afters they made big profits trading the stolen BTC.
The silk road BTC stolen from phishing and idiots laptop coz he's to lazy to type the url in the address bar in firefox to prevent this google phishing attack. is still full, the turned 8,999.00568663 BTC into 27,000 bitcoin multiple times.
https://blockchain.info/address/167ZWTT8n6s4ya8cGjqNNQjDwDGY31vmHg
i posted this on twitter and they got the shits, they turned off the blockchain and wallet access for KORECOIN that i was trading at the time for likr 300-900 satoshi it then went upto 64000 satoshi, they tried to kill the coin and get it off the market i ended up selling the coin and losing so that they would stop trying to kill the coin. i kept Korecoin alive from last Dec to march16 this year cost me over 10 bitcoin to maintain trading the coin, i had about 60,000 Korecoin but then just dumped it all because someone accused me of being a scam. check my korecoin account address, i can post the CSV tx orderd if you like.
Im not at war with us federal marshals. I will kill anyone who tries to do wrong by me. Or closer to haydes then the minotaur can lurk.
when sites get hacked they still sell some BTC on there thats left for like $50- $150 a coin as compensation.
Why did bitfinex turn BTC trading into stock market type trading? stocks are worthless.
they cant get rid of stocks cheap enough because corporations buy complete towns to kick out all small local business.
if you cant access bitfinex webby try using the app on your phone. Bitstamp, played with my account so i couldnt access my funds, crashed my firefox with a script lucky i had the app, i just logged on the AP API said heres your account withdraw bang 30 seconds they didnt have time to mess my transactions up. However you want it you can have it your way.....If you fvck up my night i'm going to fvck up your day!
If the Us federal marshals want to sell that 8999 BTC they should sell it for 60,000 USD 90% off retail, i'll buy it from you before our aussie dollar goes back up to 99 cents to the dollar you should sell it and i can make and exchange that trades in a dozen old coins no new coins no IPO no stake BS, the miners stake the coin when the wallet mines currency while it has coins in it and is active. Atleast i'd run an exchange site that doesnt rip off the hard work the miners and traders learn. Ive had 7 bitcoin dissapper infront me i check the logs and there at that time so many ftc sold for 6.1 plus 0.7 BTC worth of feathercoin. Those blue arrows on the side of the website buy all the trades but caluate wrong, i read the summary after i counted the sumarry from the tables live so twice i calculate how much coin for how much BTC i will get. if i sell FTC at a 3000 FTC loss every trade 10times thats 30,000 FTC lost due to selling at a price higher then i payed for not 7 BTC. I explained the error and the bug in their software and they a quiet happy that i lost BTC and they gained from my lose. made me throw the 12 BTC left over onto a casino that wouldnt pay jackpots i noticed lol spend 17 BTC winning easily 40-50 BTC and not getting a 5 or a 9 bitcoin jackpot lol.

Please use paragraphs where necessary. Really hard to read one jumbled mess of text.

As I see it, in 5 days, the bfx btc balances become eligible for transfer, at which time I expect some to flow into XMR.  It seemed like about 5% of DAO panic funds ended up in XMR.  Maybe 100kBTC flees bfx on Sunday, and about 0.5% (SWAG) of that flows into XMR, moving market cap by about 12%.

Totally wild guesses on those numbers, though.

Or maybe people will get their BFX balances and transfer it out and have an epiphany to also draw their funds out of XMR too and go back to fiat funny munny.

1059  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: August 10, 2016, 03:45:01 AM
Until this pattern of higher highs and higher lows is decisively broken, I can no longer justify my cheap/dear brackets. Nothing is too dear if the price is up every single week, week in and week out.  You can't make a market if you can never buy cheaper than you sell.

Frankly, I have run out of xmr I am willing to sell before GUI/RingCT/mulitsig levels are discovered.  Hopefully other players will provide liquidity at these levels. Sadly I let my book get too imbalanced, so I am out of business for now.  Cold wallets are sacrosanct.

I am leaving bids scattered in hope that someone decides to buy a boat, but my hopes for a fill are slim.

Market making with a crypto currency like Monero can be very trough. As you correctly point out the market is going to have to find the appropriate levels after the GUI, and also after RingCT/multisig.

Edit: There is also the question of 0.0042-0.0043 XBT levels form a technical perspective. Monero has been in a trading range from 0.0009-0.0043 XBT since August 2014. A breakout from this trading range could be very sharp.

Most of the users that post in this thread probably would agree (they can chime in, perhaps I am wrong in my assumption) that "finding" the price is implicit that the price could fall as well, which it could.

I suspect good news such as more usability with a GUI and better privacy features with RingCT will net a higher found price than as of late.

Just my two cents.

...

A big question though: if the item is going to be unfunded, should there still be something on it saying (for example) 0.1BTC on it? Or just leave it blank? I may have to buy a few different labels or create my own to order if people want a certain number on theirs.

Personally I think it helpful to have some sort of demarcation on the coin or hologram denoting if the coin was sold funded or unfunded.
