Now that Mike Hearn's Lighthouse crowdfunding app is out, let's figure out how to use it to raise funds for Monero development: http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2t1an9/bitcoinpowered_crowdfunding_app_lighthouse_has/

Yes, lets throw more Monero at scammers... Haven't heard anything from Atrides in a while...

He's setup a private group to keep contributors updated. His last activity in there was a couple of days ago.

Although I think pa was referring more to core Monero development rather than peripheral projects:)

Yes I was referring to core Monero development. Personally, even though I've contributed to the general dev fund and expect to do so again, I'd rather contribute to sub-campaigns aimed at the development of specific features. (No doubt this preference is based on some cognitive illusion, but there it is.)

It would be awesome to have a decentralized prediction market with Monero. How hard would it be do something along these lines: http://www.augur.net/ ?

Hrm. This is interesting. Especially interesting for monero because one couldn't trace the payments / votes.

Many people will refrain from using prediction markets unless they can do so privately. The quality of predictions should be higher using a private payment method.

Aaaaand Back to $220! It's always darkest before the dawn  Wink

At least we are moving in the right direction now.  When we get into the 300s and 400's things will pick up more speed.

3 days for the Resurrection, then 40 days until the Ascension, iirc
286  Economy / Speculation / Re: Smoothie Bottom Prediction Thread on: January 14, 2015, 06:33:03 AM
I will say the bottom is above $185 of this move and for the foreseeable future.

If it slams below $185 it won't last long.

Okay there you have it my prediction of the "bottom".  Grin Grin Grin

I agree.
287  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: January 11, 2015, 06:32:57 PM
Everything is fine. A prolonged lull after a big price increase in Bitcoin land is very normal. Completely expecting enthusiasm for Altcoins to dim for a while but there is no better solution for low prices than low prices. At some point, demand will pick up again, in Bitcoin land and Altcoins.
Not seen that in 2014. More of the opposite.

Bitcoinland is only 6 years old, and the current period of not reaching new heights cannot be even called "unprecedented", because we've already had a longer one. The statistical models such as the exponential trendline start to lose their value when their R^2 is not any more the largest of the models in existence. This may happen during 2015, let's see.

What do you think of sgbett's $560k thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=800330.0) ? What would happen to XMRBTC in such a scenario?

If XMR on its own accord does not do anything out of the ordinary I would expect a spike to over 0.01 XBT and possibly even as high as 0.10 XBT under such a scenario, just based on the performance of other alt-coins is past. Here are some examples: http://www.cryptocoincharts.info/pair/ltc/btc/btc-e/alltime, http://www.cryptocoincharts.info/pair/nmc/btc/btc-e/alltime. That would place XMR/USD in the 5600 to 56000 range.

If there are significant improvements in XMR then it could be higher.

The XMR/BTC appreciation would be because of BTC profit-takers seeking to diversify? Was that evident in past BTC spikes? I've never paid attention to alts before XMR.

Secondary offering - Smooth Investment Fund

Smooth Investment Fund is making a secondary offering of 300 units at 97% of NAV. This is a 3% discount off of the value of the underlying assets (which are in general priced at their midprice).

Discount is increased to 17% below NAV (83% of NAV). For the rest of the details see above.

This is the lowest discount that will be offered, and represents an unprecedented value on some of the premium assets in the game!

Any unsold shares by 2014-01-12 01:50:00 will be purchased by me.

Subscriptions (all will be sold at the same price):

Haridimous 12 shares
Lord HH 120 shares (stated purchase amount of 100 million)
--
Available 168 shares

Rhadamanthus will purchase the remaining shares.
290  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wouldn't it be nice... (the LazyWhale algorithm) on: January 11, 2015, 03:20:35 AM
This is one of the observations I made during the last year that is still puzzling me. Many of the "old hands" (let's say, registration 2012 and before) seem to have a very keen nose for the market state in general terms.

I'm not talking about the most general intuition, the 'in retrospect, any price turns out to be a good price per coin on a long enough horizon' idea. I share that one, but it's more of a shared hope we have here, but it hasn't been tested that much yet.

I mean a more specific one: the one where the legendary (previously: hero) members have a pretty good feel for when the market is about to turn, both towards 'hopeless, prepare for a serious correction' but also at the other end, 'don't expect that much panic anymore'. It's not universally shared among that class of members of course (some are almost always too bullish, some almost always too bearish), but a good number of the old members that I follow seem to be able to get a rough reading on what the state of the market is.

No deeper insight I can offer. Just something I believe to have noticed.
Possible explanations:

1. The key is brains. Early accepters are smarter, in general. To invent bitcoin you have to be very very smart, to understand and appreciate you have to be very smart, and so on.
2. The key is knowledge. For the 4 years of trading they've became B.Sc of trading.
3. The key is managing your emotions. For 4 years they got enough emotional experience to be able to control them.
4. The key is natural talent. 4 years of natural selection took ones with it. The rest is broken or just left the forum.

Well. Heaps of versions and no idea which one to chose. Just like with trading. There always a lot of plausible theories about why the price must go up and lot - about why it must go down. And I always choose wrong one  Smiley

291  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency - 0.8.8.6 on: January 10, 2015, 10:01:23 PM
Isn't' it better to have the flexibility to opt out?  Couldn't tell if you were citing this as a pro or a con.  I still think it's important to have other strong coins such as Monero in the marketplace but more fore the reason of having alternatives if bitcoin ever becomes too unattainable.  If they both have the same features and you can buy stuff with it then who cares if the feature you use was the result of a fork or add-on or whatever.

Monero already has this, and has had it from the genesis block. You can opt-out globally (for a particular address) by publishing your view key, as we have done with the Monero donation address on the OP. We will also add the functionality to reveal the one-time key on a per-transaction basis in future.

Well in that case it's just a matter of doing what Bitcoin has done in order for Monero to gain value.  Monero needs to be accepted as a payment method by more merchants just like Overstock, Newegg, TigerDirect, etc etc etc.

I'm not saying that it would be a bad thing for Monero to be accepted as a means of payment at large online retailers like Overstock, Newegg, and Tigerdirect, but during the time period that Bitcoin has been accepted at these retailers, it's value (related to the USD) has been pretty steadily decreasing. So, maybe, just be careful what you wish for...

The first few merchants (alpaca socks, memorydealers) were very good for Bitcoin. We need a few dozen of those.

The "perfect storm" is right in front of your eyes. Anyone not buying BTC under $300 is going to miss a great chance to own more Bitcoin.

I agree. It's going to shock almost everyone when it happens.

I think we can all agree that real beauty comes from a fixed supply and resistance to double spending.

And elliptic curves...

Due to the nature of the key you can write it as part of something else - eg. write a fake love letter to your wife so that the 24 words on the left hand side are your key or whatever. Then write a bunch of extra love letters. That way, if your deposit box is ever discovered, it'll be disregarded as unimportant love letters.

Can anyone add a step-by-step guide to writing plausible love letters?

alright that was pretty impressive, I was critical of Atrides in private message, but what else does Monero need? I too have a team of developers, now that the community can make some things worthwhile

Welp, if no one else is gonna suggest things, I'll throw something out there.

I think some kind of web payment / storefront interface would be a winner. Once shapeshift.io gets monero going, I think that we could piggy back on existing bitcoin payment processing to enable businesses to accept monero.

monero -> shapeshift -> bitcoin -> bitpay

of course the goal is to create an easy plug 'n play thing for e-commerce sites to implement.

We're looking into that with some friends. It's very preliminary, not much more to say yet.

well thats just awesome!

Piggybacking is cheap but it also means that there are more points of failure.

right, but from what I gather, the monero -> fiat requires uber legal work. So right now there's one point of failure - not being able to buy things with monero. Until this effort is taken up with the proper resources, I think piggybacking would be useful / popular in the interim.

I mean, once shapeshift gets monero integrated, we really don't have to make anything - people wanting to use monero to pay for something at a website that uses bitpay would just go to shapeshift and put in the proper addresses.

the point of making the piggyback application would just be to make it easier to use for everyone involved.

Is it confirmed that shapeshift.io is working on Monero integration?

Most of you know that I am an unashamed Bitcoin bull and have been so for a while now, but I think we are on the verge of some exciting times.

This Bitstamp issue might actually be a huge blessing in disguise.  It comes on the cusp of some major advertising for Bitcoin with the widely viewed Bitcoin Bowl and a good presence at CES this week just to name a couple things.  Roger Ver is bringing some press on the main page of Yahoo today (and on Business Insider) indirectly for not being allowed in the US, but it is press nonetheless. And these are just a few small things on the top of my head.  With the price undervalued right now (which I believe firmly that it is) It won't take much for the price to rebound.

That said, I feel strongly it is "when" and not "if" Bitstamp resumes operations, the price will jump and it will surprise all these newbies on the sidelines.  When they see the price move as quickly as some of us know the Bitcoin price can move, they will decide to throw some money in because they don't want to miss out.  That is how these bubbles begin.  It will just build from there. People throw in a little money, they see how much they earn in a week and they throw in more and so it goes.  How high will the price reach this time? Well that is debatable of course, but easily back to the ATH we achieved before.

So I feel like I am watching a storm in the distance and waiting for it to approach.  Smiley  Hopefully it is a tsunami and not just a few rain drops.

I agree and would add that whenever Lawsky gets his act together and promulgates his BitLicense regulations in final form, the least timid of the institutional investors and Wall Street will begin to dip their toes in the Bitcoin market. Given the size of their toes, this could cause quite a dramatic price increase.

I have access to my wallet, but did not note down the seed words (not sure if that's the correct term) when I created it. Is there a command to show me these seed words while I have my wallet open?

Thanks

in simplewallet, the command is "seed" (without quotation marks)
