I've updated to v0.8.8.4 on OS X 10.9.4 (via Homebrew), and it sync'd nicely. Great work!

I intermittently get this message: "[P2P3][sock 21] Some problems at write: Broken pipe:32". (The sock # varies.)

I was getting the same error message on v0.8.8.3, but I don't recall seeing it before the past week or two.

Is it related to the attack? Is my local copy of the blockchain corrupted? Or is this nothing to worry about?

And the price doesn't have to change for it to get cheaper:  E[p(t)] is increasing monotonically in t.
hypothesis accepted
Could you explain what E[p(t)] means?

E[p(t)] = Expected value of price as a function of time

Since the subscription is anonymous, and can be bought with BTCD, a coin that the same dev also controls, we have to keep the possibility in mind that the number of non-insiders participating may be very small, yet it looks like a great success.

Not wanting to label anyone a scammer without proof, but so far everything fits in a con also, so keep this in mind.

James has always been courteous to me, so it is difficult to continue reminding of this uncertain but probable and serious possibility.

Based on his recent contributions to the XMR, BBR, and SuperNET threads, I find James to be creepy and untrustworthy. Perhaps it is just a coincidence that his dramatic alienation from Monero, which supposedly led him to create SuperNet and pump BBR, coincided with the recent chain spamming and corrupt block attacks (and the associated anti-Monero shilling/sockpuppetry). As Monero survived the attacks, he turned on a dime and presented himself as Monero's high-minded defender against sniping by some of his SuperNET/BBR/BTCD minions. It all rings false to me, an elaborate charade.

Prior to the attack, BBR was being left behind, in large part because its dev CZ was anonymous and and suspected by some (see the rethink-your-strategy thread) to be one of the CN/Bytecoin scammers. BBR was likely launched as a way to regain a foothold in the CN space after the scam was exposed and Monero gained momentum. BBR was positioning itself as "the other" non-scammy CN coin, but just as it became obvious that Monero was building a decisive lead, along comes SuperNET and the deus ex hackina. Then, in Monero's darkest hour, from both James and CZ we hear calls for solidarity with their Monero brothers and letting bygones be bygones. BBR and Monero would henceforth walk hand in hand, a beautiful synergy.

They come across as arsonists, first at the scene to help put out the fire, who get themselves hailed as rescuers, and slyly ingratiate themselves with the homeowner--waiting for the chance to wreck maximum havoc.

I wonder how Bitcoin would have fared in 2010 if Satoshi & Hal had gone rogue and started trying to sabotage it. Monero devs, I salute you!

Exactly. Pretty much directly after the Mining Software disclosure I got out with a good 30% profit. And I'm pretty sure I won't regret it, ever.

The Mining Software disclosure? What's that?

He's talking about dga's blog post on his miner improvements.
427  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: September 04, 2014, 03:47:51 AM
True.  But I think the "ICO" is very clearly in violation of the law.  This creates a liability when they are sued by investors who lose money as a result.
Which law specifically do you think is violated?
The Securities Act of 1933, section 5(a) for one.  There are others which may also pertain, but I am not a domain expert, and prefer to mention only the one which seems relatively straightforward in its application.

Is Poloniex doing anything at all with securities?
Check out the SuperNET threads.  I can't bring myself to represent it fairly.  But I definitely think the proposal which I originally read was a securities offering.

DRAFT doc for SuperNET is at http://209.126.70.170/SuperNET.pdf
feedback appreciated

@AnonyMint: What is the estimated time of arrival for the coin you are developing? Are you working alone or on a team? Has any other competent coder vetted your ideas for face plausibility?

Definately worth reading DGA´s reply, kudos for that dga.

+1. An excellent response and exactly the right sort of tone.

anyone got a link to the post?

It's a comment thread on dga's blog post.

They went back and forth a few times and VB backpedaled, severely, although still seems intent on leaving anti-XMR wiggle words in there:

Quote
If the current Monero developers were not involved in that, then awesome, they are completely cool and legit folks in my view

My little sister could have read dga's post and not get as confused as the supposed genius Vitalik, this is a very disappointing move from him and I bet he was hoping no one would challenge him.

I'm sure he has been hoping all along that Ethereum would walk cosily into the number two spot unchallenged and now a number two competitor is growing strong, well the final desperate attack is FUD and lies.

It's more likely VB just skimmed DGA's post and didn't realize that it was Bytecoin that came out with the crippled miner. The soap opera involving Bytecoin, CryptoNote, Bitmonero, Monero, Quazarcoin, Boolberry, etc. . . is so tangled. And on top of that, there is the FUD spread by the Bytecoin scammers and sockpuppets.  It's not surprising that outsiders have a hard time appreciating why Monero deserves to be taken seriously.

Is there any known QR code generator for XMR addresses/keys publicly available?

Looks like the .NET client supports QR:

How does one convert the 24 word seed into the hexadecimal number it represents? Can the hexidecimal # be entered in simplewallet instead of the 24 word seed to restore a wallet?

You can't without a program. You have to use --restore-deterministic to create a new wallet using the seed and it will give you the address.

In theory it is possible to create a standalone program (that doesn't exist AFAIK) to generate the address from a seed, but you wouldn't ever want to do this on a web site for example, because you would also be revealing your private keys.

I think that smoothie is looking for a way to compactly represent the seed for inscription in a physical monero coin.

Is Monero compatible with side-chains? If so, could a Zerocash-like side chain someday be incorporated into Monero, giving users per-transaction options of transparency, pretty good privacy, and total anonymity (provided you trust the Mint)?

Perhaps we will someday have ZeroMonero Minting Ceremonies as we add new Zerocash sidechains to Monero, and people will only accord trust to ZeroMonero that they or their webs-of-trust witnessed being minted honestly.

BBR will reach Monero's market cap sometime within the next few months. I have no idea if 1 or both coins will survive the next five years are what their "successes" will be. But James is a legit developer and everything he has put his mind to has come together and come together fast. I am a big holder of both coins, but there are going to be a lot of pissed off BTC whales in a few months about all this went down. Because this is going to hit them in their ego and their pocket books short term. Meanwhile, I'll happily ride both trains.

James seems legit: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=762346.msg8618574#msg8618574
436  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: September 01, 2014, 01:55:29 AM
While I do regret making the sock puppet comment without a sound evidentiary basis (for which I previously, publicly apologized), I doubt that I have any real responsibility for his BBR pump - although it would be a sort of poetic justice for my misstep.

BBR was undervalued, so it was ripe for a pump & dump, and James is definitely the whale to do it.

I fear CZ may regret making a deal with old scratch before long.

Having just wasted 40 minutes of my life reading the entire "SuperNET" thread, I think you were correct about the the sock puppet comment, whatever your evidentiary basis at the time. That thread is littered with dissociated identities. It's hard for me to understand why anyone takes this pump & dumper seriously. Half-way through the thread, someone calls him out on having issued assets on the NXT platform to himself. "James" then asserts that this must have been a scammer trying to make him look bad. See: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=762346.msg8603930#msg8603930

Not reassuring.

I now recall why I avoided alts until Monero.
437  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: August 31, 2014, 09:28:00 PM
SuperNET is pretty much designed to turn BBR in to an XMR killer. That's the intention anyway. Take advantage of the network effect and combine forces of Bitcoindark, BBR and any other coin they think has good features.

I'm a bit skeptical(as usual Tongue) because I can't really see how this is supposed to work technically, but I'm certainly not dismissing the concept. And I'll be watching the developments as the idea is unique and interesting.

I don't own any of the involved currencies(XMR, BBR, BTCD), so I have no skin in this game. But it will be very interesting to see what happens. Also, I'm curious about how the XMR camp is going to react to such an aggressive move against them.

jl777 definitely makes crypto interesting! Smiley

I noticed that. Here is James' post:

Quote
The monero camp (not its devs) mistreated me. At least I felt very insulted, especially when my thoughtful post on the XMR observer thread was totally ignored, until one person made a positive comment. Then I am accused of using a sockpuppet! Of all things to attack my integrity. Then my writing is ridiculed. I am incompetent to write a whitepaper, I know this. I only wrote the draft text and hired a professional writer for making it better. I liked the pirates to make it easy to understand for normal peoples. It was supposed to be split into two documents, one just with pirates and one without. I just dont have time for "GUI" things and I rely on others to just do what is needed. I also dont have time to micromanage or pester people. So a lot of things, they are unfinished. I am not a cryptographer, this also is used to dismiss my Teleport. So, making disparaging comments about my integrity, my intelligence, my tech, my coin.

Even I have my limits.

James

438  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: MC2: A cryptocurrency based on a hybrid PoW/PoS system on: August 31, 2014, 06:57:05 PM
The main advances over BTC in MC2 are 51% attack-resistance, less blockchain bloat, and a democratic system of altering certain parameters; is that correct?

The democratic aspect worries me a bit. I'm not so impressed with the results of democracy in the real world, where it appears that democracies are susceptible to hijacking by wealthy factions, who then alter the laws to favor themselves. Eventually these factions make themselves into oligarchs. Isn't it better to have a philosopher-king dev who is committed and incentivized to "do the right thing" vis a vis the coin?
439  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: August 31, 2014, 05:09:06 AM
I agree with the sentiment... but I still think that there is going to could  be a bang in a city in a place that is not expecting it at some point before all this is up...  I cannot see the players giving in so easily.

As for the longer term future... with that I DO share your optimism, the world is a changin' indeed and in the future I see some rapid evolution events.. I do still believe in people.. and I do think we are on a verge of global changes... I just hope they come in time, and with as little blood as possible..
i.e there is not another 9/11 style event in a major city that takes a lot of civilian lives... one last(?) big bang so to speak to kickstart this whole thing.. I hope you are right..and I am wrong and it never happens, and the consequences that follow are avoided.

I came across this Bitcoin thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=752260.0) and was wondering whether it implies that Bitcoin transactions can be made as private as Monero?
