1601  Other / Off-topic / Re: [POLL] How often do you show/hide persons on your ignore list? on: December 08, 2012, 04:23:12 AM
The show/hide button doesn't work very well so if it looks from other people's quotes like someone on my ignore list has something interesting to say, I unignore them - safe in the knowledge that it takes only one click to put them back on ignore.
1602  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Bitcoin-Central, first exchange licensed to operate as a bank. This is HUGE on: December 07, 2012, 11:21:20 PM
I give it two months before there are real problems between Paysius and their fiat banking partners.  It won't be their fault, of course, but this will not last.
There's something seriously wrong with estalishing partnership with liquid dough fixing psychopaths . i held my tongue until at least someone who has some feeling put it in a just perspective . . i think .. I am absolutely blown a way i can not fully fathom or grasp what i'm feeling  .

If your fellow Bitcoin users were happy to simply use Bitcoin for transactions then there'd be no need for services which hold fiat funds on behalf of users and no need to mitigate against the loss of those fiat funds.
1603  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Bitcoin-Central, first exchange licensed to operate as a bank. This is HUGE on: December 07, 2012, 11:06:58 PM
We'll see when most large exchanges and >51% of the commercial miners "partner" with the banks and their government regulators in their respective countries.  Not only are they going to be "bought out", but there will be no way to prevent the banks and governments from changing the fundamental rules of the Bitcoin software, and making it into a p2p PayPal with their usual rules. Cheesy

Nobody is required to use exchanges.  People appear to do so largely in the hope of making a profit - we saw people gravitate towards HYIPs when the price of Bitcoin was low and stable earlier in the year.

Within the Bitcoin ecosystem there are different factions with very different agendas - it is up to each faction to advance their own agenda.  What Bitcoin ultimately becomes will be determined in part by how people use it.  If the majority of people want to use Bitcoin as a p2p currency outside of the conventional financial system, then services which are substantially based on interacting with the conventional financial system will decline in both number and size.

If it looks like at the moment Bitcoin is replicating existing financial services/products "but with Bitcoin", then it's because people are demanding/using those services.

This is massive news.  Yes, you'll probably encounter issues as time passes just like PayPal and Dwolla have and those issues will probably mean that your service needs to adapt its model but someone needed to take that first step forward.

I assume you'll want power and wi-fi, correct?

I'm guessing not if he wants to live "like Ted Kaczynski did".

What was the target audience for this particular presentation?  Knowing Amir's political leanings, it might have been a somewhat appropriate presentation if he was trying to convince anarchists of the value of Bitcoin as a political tool.  No so much if he was trying to sell the idea of Bitcoin as something useful for commerce, though.

Thanks.  Yeah, looking through the comments section on the website it looks like the group has a pretty heavy professional focus and professionals are a tough audience to captivate.

He doesn't even have a Plan A.

Sure he does.  Some time in the next 14 days the music festival fairy is going to organise a venue, equipment, performers and publicity for his music festival.  What could possibly go wrong with that plan?
1610  Economy / Lending / Re: Whats the advantage of doing business loan here VS on BtcJam? on: December 05, 2012, 10:19:18 PM
BTCJam has a couple of downsides.  Although you can browse the listings without joining, you can't access people's profiles without joining.  But the biggest downside from my perspective is that lenders have to agree not to try to collect late payments themselves if borrowers default.
1611  Other / Off-topic / Re: Dank Dream 2012 on: December 05, 2012, 10:04:46 PM
So what happens to the music festival if you don't get to California in the next 2 weeks, dank?  I hope you've got a Plan B.

I want to be Zeus.

Over 70 lawsuits were filed against the organisers of Woodstock and that was back in the day when society was less litigious and the flower children of 1960s counter-culture actually believed that "love is all you need".

Amir Taaki, Founder of Intersango - Bitcoin, a virtual currency
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-DVOYyx_6U

Unbelievably this video isn't a prank. Or is it?!
I hope someone does some good follow ups on this or I will see my self forced to do it, one of these days.
Because... it isn't excuse the complexity of the subject standing as an expert on the subject.
If he really did write a bitcoin client and can do more than Flash animations and bell ringing, well... than he would be doing much better explaining the intrinsicaties of Satoshi paper, like explaining what, why and how are digital signatures used by bitcoin; how is hashing used in bitcoin, about the block creation and mining reward, proof-of-work, and so.
At least 90% of the people hate hackers, so he better explained properly what he meant saying that "we" were hackers. I know hacking can be an ethical activity but many people don't and I think it is very mean not making a distinction between right and wrong activities,
I don't think it did a good job explaining it. And cryptography isn't limited by the number of prime numbers that is known, and the methods/alogithms used by bitcoin are in practice quite impossible to break or hack. It all needs really better explanation.
We need to keep instructing ourselves in order to make ourselves clear and be able to
dissipate all sorts of confusions that are prone to arise.
Also the potential of bitcoin was left too vague and I think he should had given better hints about what he meant regarding that, like mentioning the possibility of smart propriety, distributed contracts, provably fair gambling, and so. He just left it very vague at that point.

Leaving aside the question of whether or not Amir is regarded by the community as an "expert", plenty of technically competent people are not good speakers and suck shit at explaining concepts to others.  If you believe better explanations are needed, get to work on creating them - all though there are already many good explanations out there if you bother looking for them.

It's also somewhat ironic that you're criticising someone else's ability to communicate effectively when it takes considerable effort on the part of the reader to comprehend your own post.

Strange how Kid Cudi is quite the social media whore but he's not promoting his upcoming appearance at *the biggest musical festival evah* anywhere.
1616  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: Dank Bank Deposits - dank soul guarantee - New music Nov 30th on: December 05, 2012, 12:28:02 AM

I'm still trying to figure out why someone would loan money to someone free. IBB does it for the religious angle, but other than that...

I loan people money for free all the time.  Of course they're people I actually know and care about and most of the time I regard it as a gift that I don't really expect back.
1617  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: Dank Bank Deposits - dank soul guarantee - New music Nov 30th on: December 05, 2012, 12:17:12 AM
By my calculations dank's rent must be due again soon.  Yet he doesn't even have the funds to get to California to organise the world's biggest music festival.  I sense a disturbance in the Force approaching.
1618  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: I lost my job, because of bitcoins! on: December 04, 2012, 11:58:54 PM

What I don't understand is why you did this without talking to the owner first though.

Yeah, that's the part that seems fishy.  There is more likely more to this story than he's sharing, IMHO.

No I was just lazy.

"Dear Boss i want to accept bitcoins as payment in your taxi".

What would my boss say? " what is bitcoins? explain it but i dont have more then 2 minutes"

he wouldn  understand what the hell bitcoins is. And there are no national laws about "bitcoins" so it would be impossible for his accounting to manage the bitcoin in/output. So I did it by myself.

Were these fares for which you were accepting BTC on the meter?  If they weren't then your boss had every reason to fire you.  If they were then you needed to be giving your boss a written record of those fares at the end of each shift and giving him his portion in the same manner he gets his cut for normal fares (here it's in cash at the end of each shift).

This isn't really any different than if you had decided to accept any other payment method not accepted by your boss - PayPal, Square, Pogs, Zimbabwean currency, whatever.  You still needed to be recording everything accurately, giving him copies of your records, and giving him the cash owed to him in the normal manner.

While it's not "impossible" for him to deal with the accounting issues, there's really no reason why he should feel obligated to do so and it would have been reasonable for him to charge an extra fee for any additional administrative burden created by you accepting Bitcoin.
1619  Other / Off-topic / Re: Dank Dream 2012 on: December 04, 2012, 10:42:25 PM
If they want the music festival insured, they should do it their self.

I'd say that it's pretty bad karma not to do whatever you can to protect the fellow human beings you love so much from possible harm and loss at the event you're organising.  There's not going to be some magic forcefield keeping out trouble-makers.

I'm getting tired of this bullshit.  Time to contact the artists you maintain are "probably" going to perform at your festival and find out whether they've even heard of the event.
1620  Economy / Lending / Re: [Need] 100 BTC loan, I defaulted with others - Will pay 10.5 btc monthly minimum on: December 04, 2012, 10:11:31 PM

I understand and i might have to do that, 100 BTC loan is huge, i mean i wish i could do this by USD and just have a system where they get the $125 every month, but i am still thinking on a solution.

Can you explain why doing this in USD isn't an option?  Also, how thin are your margins here?  Can you comfortably afford $125 per month because sure as shit something unexpected is going to come up over the next 10 months and if you can only barely afford the $125 then you're setting yourself (and your new lender) up for further default.

$1300 isn't a huge amount and that's going to be part of your problem here.  It's the kind of amount that people only seek from strangers when they've exhausted all other options - friends, family, credit cards, personal loans, crappy sub-prime loans, selling stuff, etc.
