Another good solution would be to force everyone to agree on an arbitrator with their trading partner before trading. Then whenever someone claims that they were scammed, the arbitrator would decide who gets a scammer tag. I'm not sure if I could easily force everyone to do this, though, since transactions are almost always finalized via PMs.

I'm not entirely against that idea, but the point of arbitration in the real world is that it's legally binding.  A lot of scams here are for relatively trivial amounts and arbitration seems like an absurd amount of effort for the mere awarding of a tag (which most scammers don't care about anyway).  It seems like an unnecessary layer of complexity and expense for transactions which aren't high value.

I'm also somewhat against this forum being the policeman for the entire Bitcoin economy.  We've recently seen a thread in the scam forum regarding a BTCJam transaction and I'm not sure that this forum should consider awarding tags on the basis of activity which hasn't taken place here.

If the scammer tag process is too laborious, it's not much use - it warns people after the horse has well and truly bolted.  But I also think a trend is developing where people make little effort to actually resolve issues before posting scammer accusation threads and expect to have the tag apllied on the basis of little or no evidence.

If we're going to make any changes to the way we deal with scammers in this forum, I think we need to review the whole thing and decide whether the forum should play any active role in policing scammers and to what extent.

It's been suggested before, and maybe it's time to revisit the idea of splitting Marketplace off from the forums proper.

702  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Dwolla fisync participating banks? on: March 15, 2013, 10:50:42 PM
Digging up and old topic.

I've searched and still only found that one participating iowa credit union that uses dwolla's fisync.

Has anyone heard any more.

Any other good method of automated and cheap dwolla or any btc to "Big Name" banks - on a daily basis?

Veridian part owns Dwolla so they have no reason not to trust it's transactions - they're essentially moving around funds already under their control.  Other banks/credit unions have no reason to trust the system.

I think most of the time people can stop it simply by putting their opinion into the scam threads as they come across them.

We all have verbose opinions and love to type.  Cheesy

If most people took a few seconds to identify the scam thread as they incidentally come across them by posting so in them, those threads would quickly fill with scam warnings.

Then we will have done all we can to protect our own reputations, because the scammers naturally try to mascarade as us, the non-scammers, and affect the reputation of this whole forum.

People constantly try to warn others in threads where likely scams are happening and get told to "stop trolling".

The scammer forum is pretty much for after the fact warnings and having glanced at the crap it's filled with now, it's become pretty much useless.

Introducing a post/time threshold for certain types of posts would increase the effort required to start trolling for victims.  I'm hesitant to use SomethingAwful as a reference point, but the requirement that you must be a member for 7  months before you can sell something on their SAMart forum helps make scammers look elsewhere for easy pickings.

You're not going to stop scammers looking for victims.  You can only exert some measure of control over how easy it is for them to find them here.
704  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Looking for system integrators for new asic on: March 15, 2013, 12:18:07 PM
We are quite aware of our actual competition (Butterflylabs, Avalon,..) , but we are unfamiliar with the companies behind some other recent announcements that are suspected hoaxes. Many people asked us if we had any relation with them, I just wanted to make clear that we do not know them and they are not using our chips.
I would encourage You to consider talking to BFL also (in addition to Avalon). It is not in my interest but the BTC community invested in the BFL project millions of USD. It would be a shame if this goes up in smoke as bASIC did.

It would also be a shame if the emergence of a new player in the ASIC market doesn't lead to more competition and more vendors to choose from.  This is a golden opportunity for vendors to emerge who have short order to delivery times and for the now ridiculous never-ending pre-order saga to die a far overdue death.  It would be a shame if it's squandered on merely reinforcing the status quo.

How about a list of trusted people vs scammesr. List of scammers is useless because they can make another account.
A master list would also be exploitable. How about integrating web of trust (like bitcoin-otc) into Bitcointalk?

Look how many previously trusted community members now wear the scammer tag.  People need to stop being so open-minded that their brains fall out.  This community vouching for the trustworthiness of its members hasn't worked too well so far and there's no reason to believe it would in the future.  It's a role/responsibility it should emphatically reject.

The lesson to be learned: Never keep anything more in an online wallet then you can afford to lose.

Or on an exchange, for that matter.

The connection has timed out
The server at www.butterflylabs.com is taking too long to respond.

It went offline a while back and came back up.  The forum and the website are both down now, though.

It's BTCJam.  Neither defaults nor people violating ToS and contacting defaulters directly are unexpected.

709  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why is Bitcoin safe against a quantum computer? on: March 15, 2013, 09:18:44 AM
That's interesting:

[1] Bitcoin uses Elliptic Curve cryptography (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcoin)
[2] Gavin is the lead Bitcoin developer (https://bitcoinfoundation.org/about/board)
[3] Gavin visits CIA (https://bitcointalk.org/?topic=6652.0)
[4] CIA involved into quantum computing (http://www.technologyreview.com/news/429429/the-cia-and-jeff-bezos-bet-on-quantum-computing/)
[5] Elliptic Curve cryptography is breakable with quantum computing (http://pqcrypto.org/)

Shouldn't we change Bitcoin signing algorithm? If Gavin is against these changes it will be very suspicious...

What do you suggest changing it to which won't be breakable with quantum computing (assuming anyone cared to throw quantum computing resources at breaking it in the first place)?
710  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Attacks. The sooner the better? on: March 15, 2013, 08:51:02 AM
The benefit of course would be to reveal weaknesses now so they can be addressed.

The truth is that most of bitcoiners don't want such a testing. They want $1000 price to cash out. There u can find only a few ppl who support ur idea.

Well nobody's spending $100,000 on mining hardware or buying BTC at USD 40+ just so they can buy a pair of shoes with Bitcoin, that's for sure.

What an interesting way for the OP to boycott BFL.

712  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL says ALL SALES FINAL on: March 15, 2013, 08:00:08 AM
Tired, hence the incorrect word choice.

No, it's an important point which I think you're right to raise.  BFL have never said that all pre-order money remains untouched, only that it wasn't being used to fund development.  They could very easily clarify whether or not pre-order funds have been untouched except for refunds if they wanted to (tired, poor grammar).
713  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL says ALL SALES FINAL on: March 15, 2013, 07:44:57 AM
They've also stated that no pre-order moneys were used for development, inferring that if everybody cancelled all at once, everybody would be promptly paid in full with no questions asked.

Your powers of inference are getting shaky Phin.  Stating that no pre-order funds were used for development in no way implies that they haven't been used for other expenses or that they're quarantined.
714  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Oh my Gox! We have a delay again, is this a big sell-off? on: March 15, 2013, 06:20:09 AM
Let's hope the transition of their customers to CoinLab has considerably less hiccups than their trading engine has been having lately.  There's a hell of a lot of people who need to agree to CoinLab's ToS between now and the 29th if that transition is to go smoothly.
715  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL says ALL SALES FINAL on: March 15, 2013, 06:13:35 AM
Interesting: http://business.ftc.gov/documents/alt051-selling-internet-prompt-delivery-rules
Quote
For definite delays of up to 30 days, you may treat the customer's silence as agreeing to the delay. But for longer or indefinite delays - and second and subsequent delays - you must get the customer's written, electronic or verbal consent to the delay. If the customer doesn't give you his okay, you must promptly refund all the money the customer paid you without being asked by the customer.

Finally, you have the right to cancel orders that you can't fill in a timely manner, but you must promptly notify the customer of your decision and make a prompt refund.

Nobody's disagreeing that BFL has contravened this regulation, but it still only entitles customers to a refund.
716  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: SatoshiDice And the root of all evil on: March 15, 2013, 05:56:13 AM
I think that the bitcoin system should be able to deal with a large number of transactions without collapsing. It is still at a very early stage. If right now it has problems because a one and only s.dice it will collapse in the near future when more people use it as payment platform.

Exactly.  And if escalating fees are the only way it can deal with large volumes of transactions, then it's going to be pretty useless for P2P micro-payments, rivalling PayPal, or anything else - you might as well just use your credit card or bank transfers and spare yourself the hassle of acquiring Bitcoin and dealing with extreme volatility.  Bitcoin needs to be able to process massive volumes of transactions in real time in order to be viable as a payment protocol.  Delaying the problem by cutting out trivial transactions isn't a solution - especially when gambling is one of Bitcoin's growth industries.
717  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Satoshi Dead? on: March 15, 2013, 04:10:24 AM
If I recall correctly, I joined the forums when about 2 million BTC had been mined and Satoshi had already vanished from public life before then.  Yes, it's possible that he's continued to acquire BTC at every opportunity but it's also possible that he gave away a substantial amount when they were worth nothing, as did other early adopters, and/or sold some of his BTC.
718  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Has anyone actually filed an FTC complaint? on: March 15, 2013, 03:31:46 AM
By the way, on BFL forums, there are a few users complaining they can't pay with Paypal. Some think it is a site error and BFL staff says they don't know, just try again.

I wonder if Paypal found out that BFL is doing Bitcoin Related transactions. I recall on the forum people said Paypal will cancel orders if they know it is Bitcoin related. Any truth to this?

PayPal does have a policy relating to processing transactions for the sale of digital currencies.  I can't see that policy extending cover anything and everything Bitcoin related, though.  If they intervened here, it would be more likely to be because products haven't been delivered in a timely manner than because the hardware itself is Bitcoin related (there's nothing stopping you using PayPal to sell Bitcoin T-shirts, for instance).  Again, this isn't likely to happen unless customers open disputes with PayPal and they have no incentive to do that while BFL is honouring refund requests.

Quote
As to new customers where are they supposed to go? bASIC is gone and Avalon is only doing batches.

It's precisely this "must have an ASIC ASAP" attitude which allows BFL to do what it's doing.  People could cancel their orders/hold off ordering until BFL has actually delivered and closed the order/delivery time gap but they want to be "in on the ground floor of the next big thing".  BFL exploits that just as pirate did, but at the end of the day the choice to hang in there is being made by BFL customers - their fear of missing a "once in a lifetime chance" is greater than their fear of being screwed by BFL.  Nobody "needs" an ASIC right now just as no-one "needed" to give their BTC to pirate.  At the end of the day, people are responsible for their own bad choices even when those bad choices have been encouraged by others.

Hell, you don't even hear BFL customers complaining that the timeline between delivery of Batch 1 and the bulk order (which would have given early adopters a significant advantage) has been compressed any more - lots of them are planning to order more units and they want those units sooner rather than later even if it means hash rate will climb much faster than under the original timeline.
719  Other / Off-topic / Re: bitcoin price alarm app on: March 15, 2013, 03:06:43 AM
People developed these during the volatility of 2011.  It might not be much use given the ridiculous lag time MtGox has been experiencing lately when things get volatile.
720  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL says ALL SALES FINAL on: March 15, 2013, 03:03:43 AM
Watch the refunds in action. A true test if their sales are actually "final or not'.

https://forums.butterflylabs.com/pre-sales-questions/1332-how-do-i-cancel-my-order.html

I'm fucked if I know what customer service is so busy with given that they should have been spending most of their time on putting units in boxes and shipping them by now.
