461  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: If you're thinking buying mining hardware, read this first on: April 28, 2011, 03:39:21 PM
Yes mining is not profitable. Please stop using your GPUs to mine for bitcoins. Do not sell your GPUs, play games with them and just buy BTC on the market. Leave the mining to the insane.
462  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: [MINER] Phoenix - New efficient, fast, modular miner **BFI_INT support!** on: April 28, 2011, 02:59:30 PM
In windows if you don't want to use a dummy plug you can just switch the monitor cable from the primary to the secondary and the secondary card should then be immediately visible to OpenCL apps. I would build a dummy cable cause I'm lazy and don't want to be flippin cables....

Not working on Windows 7 and catalyst 11.4. The desktop is becoming blanj and you wont be able to start any program.

Odd. Then again I tried it with 11.3 - works fine. What happens when I switch the cable to the secondary card is I get a windows desktop. The catalyst drivers should
detect the secondary display and create a secondary desktop. If not you may have to manually create a desktop. Also bear in mind this is WITHOUT crossfire enabled. Crossfire may introduce additional details into the picture.

Yes if you can cross fire those cards the 3rd gpu will become visable to the system.
463  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Setting up a farm? on: April 28, 2011, 07:06:12 AM
Instead of buying 4 5850s... why not simply buy 1 5970 for $500 used and maybe buy a $70 Mobo + CPU combo...

If you are going to create a "farm" then you will require a motherboard with multiple pcie slots which will cost multiple hundreds of dollars... just for the motherboard.
Because 1 5970 = roughly 550 MH/s, and 4 5850's = roughly 1000 MH/s.

rrrr 1 5970 = ~720mhps. But good luck finding one for $500

I've been debating weather or not to buy a 4 pci-e mobo.

Tonight I bought a 2 slot mobo (mobo and cpu ~ $85) im going to put 2x5870's in there giving me an extra ~790mhps.. but maybe in the near future if I can get an investor that wants to make a 10% return over 5 months I can purchase another mobo for 4x5870 and put 2x6990 or 5970's in this mobo. I wont be buying any cases! Smiley
464  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: 4 Card Motherboard on: April 28, 2011, 05:12:22 AM

The reference ones are better.

Duly noted, the ones with the full covering around the heatsink and the squirrel cage fan?

this dont matter much if you are like some of us that simply strap our mobos, psu & hd to a plate and run it without a case. Much better cooling, especially in my field stone basement.
465  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: 4 Card Motherboard on: April 28, 2011, 04:59:39 AM
ebay... just over 200 shipped.

But how do you know that the card wasn't run to the point of damage when you get it from EBay.  Sure, it may work for games, but 98-100% GPU usage day and day out will reveal the damage.

Hey its a gamble like everything else. I bought two used 5xxx cards and they have been mining hard for 3 months without any issue.

mobo/psu(650w) must be crossfire cert.
2gb ram
cpu/am3 sempron 140 would be nice.

I can get suitable parts for $180 total from newegg.
Would rather pay in BTC if I can get something suitable.

470  Economy / Marketplace / [FOR SALE] 1 Karat Diamond Engagment Ring/ 14k white gold Band. on: April 26, 2011, 11:38:06 PM
These diamond size figures were quoted from an employee today at Kay Jewelers where the ring was originally purchased.
I Have original receipt from 2005 when ring was purchased. Retail Price was $2199.00

Center diamond is 1/2k. 1k is total weight. Its not gangsta bling, but its classic and elegant.

Ring is in brand new condition.

I think its size 7 1/2 (by US sizing standards)

Gold has more than tripled in value since 2005. 14k gold is only 53% gold. So Im just saying.

I am offering this ring up for sale. I would be willing to use clearcoin. I would also be willing to sell for paypal or check. But BTC is preferred here on the forum.

Offers?

This Item will ship from Massachusetts USA.
471  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: windows only supports 4 gpu? on: April 26, 2011, 10:16:14 PM
I beleive it is 4 cores max. Do you have 3 pci-e slots on your board? You should just put one of the cards in your daily use desktop and build another system for the two cards. I bought a mobo/cpu, ram, psu and just hooked it all up naked on a desk. Works awesome.

HELOOOO...

Bitcoin is divisible to 8 decimal places. EIGHT! Its a digital currency, you don't have to break it on a rock to divide it. Deflation is irrelevant.

477  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Pizza for bitcoins? on: April 26, 2011, 12:47:54 AM
this thread makes me wish I discovered bitcoin prior to the slashdot article. I'll never get social security, I've never had a bank account, I've got a little silver and not much in usd. Im hoping to put away a little bitcoin to help me in the future. So many coulda, shoulda, woulda's!

Now who wants me to buy them a pizza?

New server was finally shipped and I started to work on moving everything to new place. Expect 3-4 days of down time. Thank you in advance for your patience.

You should really forward the URL to status page telling people why the sites down and expected time that it will be back up.
479  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Buying catastrophe insurance on: April 26, 2011, 12:38:14 AM
I'd like to convert several thousand US dollars to bitcoins. As a poor grad student I'm not comfortable losing that much, so I want to buy insurance against total or near-total loss due to catastrophic events, such as:
  • Market collapse (say, bitcoins valued below $0.10 for over 30 days)
  • Bitcoin P2P network compromised or destroyed
  • Bitcoins or capital gains seized, frozen, or otherwise made unavailable due to government action
  • Mt Gox funds stolen, seized, frozen, or otherwise made unavailable for an indefinite period
  • Other events harmful to the bitcoin community as a whole... we'd have to hash out the details.

Is anyone interested in selling such insurance? I'm interested in a one-year policy with a $5000 payout. As for the premium, I think the probability of a catastrophe within this particular year is low---less than 5%---so I'll throw out $250 as a starting point for negotiation.

One thing I do need is some assurance that I can collect if necessary. I will insist on a signed, notarized, legally enforceable contract. I'm also not really familiar with the legal requirements to act as an insurer, and will tip well for any information that proves useful in completing a contract.

$250 for tieing up 5k.. while it sounds reasonable dont think I could do it. Wish I could because I would take that bet this year.

Tycho,

So why when my miners are reporting 1.3-1.4ghps does my hash rate the account page fluctuate between 1000-1290ish most of the time? Sometimes hits 1300+ but mostly in the 11-1200's.
