381  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Would You Crowdfund for a Gambler Who Has Gambled Irresponsibly? on: November 24, 2023, 08:33:37 PM
It's hard to say, but I wouldn't be a part of the donors for his campaign. It's not like he was struck by a disaster. No... He gambled away money meant for his family, or school tuition.
What would you do if he was your tenant and told you that he gambled away his rent money? Sorry, I don't have the money that I owe you, but I still want to live here for free. You'd probably kick his ass out onto the street, right?
Bottom line is, I feel for people who had problems, lost jobs, had an accident, were injured, had a death in the family... Such things I can support, but I don't support irresponsibility.
382  Economy / Economics / Re: World changing and those who don't adopt this Will stay poor on: November 24, 2023, 07:16:41 PM
So, looks like I'm going to stay poor, holding my bitcoin, while other "rich" folks run around with phone wallets full of CBDC, NFT and whatever else they come up with in the next 20 years.

Let's see how this post ages and who comes up on top. The people who support questionable progress, like ICO's, IPO's, bitcoin forks because the new king is coming, Eth flippening when it becomes more popular than bitcoin, and other dumb things like when people tell me they "invest in stable coins" or when they were saying that this or that was great... There was a time people told me Luna is a great coin, I even had a friend who told me in 2021 that he was buying Hex...

I will stay poor and you will get rich by holding pictures of apes, penguins and tokenized real estate. Come by in a few years to post a picture of your Lambo.
383  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Why the rich win gambling more than the poor. on: November 24, 2023, 06:58:33 PM
I would not say the rich win more when it comes to being more lucky or having more won than lost bets, but they win more because they bet more.

I think that OP and some of the posters are biased. You see someone brag about a large win and think that person must be way ahead now, but you don't consider the fact that while you bet $10 each time, somebody can be betting 10k and then you see that person winning $100k and think - he's rolling in it for sure. But in reality he probably lost at least 50k before winning 100k and you at the same time lost $50. The math is the same for a fish and for a whale, it's the risk that changes. He can take high risk and gets high reward. It's really visible in poker where you can get scared by someone betting high, but for that person it could be nothing.
384  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Got hacked, lost 11 BTC on: November 24, 2023, 06:32:50 PM
I think the website this hack came from was

voice  dot  testyteste dot com

So, when I open this I get an immediate block and notification from my AV software.
Site en.softaipro.fun blocked, detected botnet.
What were you looking for at that site?

I often tell people that they shouldn't use the computer where they store their coins for anything dangerous, like opening emails, installing unknown software, downloading torrents, unpacking files, connecting thumb drives and other external drives, and so on.

Edit: I missed the message where you said your wife was fooling around with a voice changer. Sorry for your loss. I just hope as many people as possible see this thread and learn from it.
At the very least guys, if you don't want to buy a hardware wallet or you don't want a paper wallet, or a cold storage in the form of wallet file on an an offline device, make sure you have a decent anti virus software and you keep your PC clean. No suspicious sites, no porn, no unofficial software, you know what I'm talking about.
385  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: OFAC-Sanctioned Transactions Being Censored on: November 23, 2023, 08:02:55 PM
Ultimately it will come down to how different people understand the words freedom and decentralization. Did you notice how in his tweet he defends his freedom of choice, as the right to filter transactions and choose to exclude Xi and Putin. This means that if his pool ever has the majority of hash power, he'll be able to stop you and me from transacting because he's now the king of bitcoin. He'll say for instance that if people from Russia want to transact they have to pay a ransom of whatever billions of dollars or he'll keep blocking them because that's his right given by "freedom." If he doesn't want you to transact, you won't.

We don't need someone to tell us who can ad who cannot send their bitcoin through the network. I may not like Puting, but if he bought bitcoin, mined it, or received as a gift, he should be able to use it.
It's not up to us to decide whose coins get tainted and who gets to transact. I guess people will once again have to vote with their mining power and make sure pools run by self-proclaimed dictators never get enough power to threaten the network.

386  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Javier Milei just won the presidentiial election in Argentina on: November 23, 2023, 07:38:36 PM
To give an example, Argentina has a huge debt with the IMF for almost 50,000 million, the net liquid reserves of the central bank are -15,000 million dollars and there is also a debt for a swap with China. With this numers you are gonna be in BIG troubles.

What would happen if Argentina defaulted on its debt, similar to what Iceland did?
The IMF is corrupt and it would be great if more countries made a stand against these extortionists.
I don't fully know the state Argentina is in, but the country could create a small economic union with a few countries and show the finger to the IMF.
They're not the only country consumed by debt. They shouldn't default against other countries, but could actually make a stand against the league of banksters.
387  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Flood the natural disaster on: November 23, 2023, 07:26:01 PM
That's like a part of the real estate investor's rulebook that you don't buy land in areas that are endangered by floods and if you have to, you make sure the houses are built to sustain at least partial flooding.
When you own a land that can be flooded, you can make it safer by building raised house that would require the water to rise to a certain level before it gets flooded.

I live in an area relatively safe from flooding, but there's a guy who built a house at much lower elevation, on an old pond. He literally covered the pond with dirt and rocks to flatten it and built a house there. If we ever get flooded he's at the lowest point in the area and is going to be swimming long before the rest of us Cheesy
388  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How Often Do You Check Your Seed Phrase. on: November 23, 2023, 07:14:12 PM
The same actually as long as I have a hardware wallet to store bitcoins not too often reach the seed phrase maybe occasionally but it is very rare, just like that but I more often check from the secure bitcoin wallet address whether there are no transactions of any kind, when there is no change then I consider it no problem.

Maybe you store in the most secure place in the safe, I don't do that but what I do to store the seed phrase is quite more secure in my version, I even back up 4 copies in different places to make sure all copies are safe and no one touches it.

I don't even have a dedicated PC like you, no storing on a hard drive, the important thing is that the copies are safe.

Isn't storing it in too many locations counterproductive? The more copies you have in different locations the more difficult it is to monitor all of them and the more probable it becomes that one of them will fall into the wrong hands and you won't even know about it.

I've always approached it this way and in my eyes 2 copies is more than enough, since you also have an active wallet installed somewhere that already has the seed entered. So, you'd need to lose access to the wallet, then lose the main seed and the backup seed. What's the chance of that happening?

Many people have only 1 seed engraved on a metal plate or stamped on it using one of those kits available on amazon. It can't be burned or flooded, so the only thing you have to worry about is someone stealing it, but in such case you always have the main wallet that you can use to move coins before the thief makes use of your seed.
389  Economy / Economics / Re: You are the product. Corporations spying on us deeper than we thought? on: November 22, 2023, 07:49:56 PM
There's a reason why in an interview where we could see Zuck's laptop, he had a piece of duct tape over it. I doubt that he was worried about being hacked Wink I'm not even going to start about that problem with Amazon Alexa

Amazon will fork over $30m in fines for multiple privacy violations, including allowing Ring employees to spy on customers, creating a security atmosphere ripe for hackers, and illegally keeping Alexa recordings of children’s voices.
https://cybernews.com/privacy/amazon-30m-fine-ring-spying-alexa-child-privacy-violations/

I'm sure most of us had this happened that we'd talk about buying something, open google and that exact thing would appear in a popup window with a discount... It could be a coincidence, but how many of you guys get a diesel power generator ads, or windshield wipers for your car. Some of these are pretty specific.
390  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Javier Milei wins presidency in Argentina on: November 22, 2023, 07:18:14 PM
If I was him, I'd get a diverse group of really serious experts (mostly but not entirely libertarian-leaning), and see if they can come up with some sane policy changes which won't cause riots.

That's a very good idea. He has 2 ways of approaching this. Either he remains 100% true to his words and starts doing as promised, in which case they're going to label him a nutjob and attack on all fronts, or thread lightly and try to slowly push as many ideas as possible, starting from the most acceptable ones.

He has to cut expenses and save money, but not at the expense of jobs. Argentina is rich in natural resources, so there's a way to make money and people will judge him on what he managed to improve.
I'd love to see him make bitcoin profits non-taxable and encourage mining. Make Argentina a safe haven for cryptocurrencies.
391  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Has anyone been able to make steady income with gambling ? on: November 22, 2023, 07:08:20 PM
This question pops up every now and then and the only people who I known to be making money are professional poker players. If you're good at poker you can get to play for more or less free by buying tournament tickets that get you the most high stakes games for the least money and you get to play really good players. If you win some of them you're going to get invited for free, so that can become a way of making money without risking anything, but again, you have to be good.

Other than that, you have to be affiliated, be a streamer, promoter, have a large referral group and you can make money in this business. If you're a small fish that plays dice once a week, you're going to be a business supporter. In other words, you're going to finance the whole operation, like thousands of other small fish.
392  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How Often Do You Check Your Seed Phrase. on: November 22, 2023, 06:54:03 PM
It may sound strange, but never. Literally for the last 5 years I haven't touched my backups or my seeds. The only thing I check from time to time is the address in blockchain, to make sure there were no transactions and my money is still where it should be. There's no way there could be a transaction, but I check it maybe twice a year.

So, I have a backup + seed locked safely in a fireproof security safe and also another backup in the form of electrum wallet file on an airgapped PC that I can connect fast if I ever need to move my coins. I haven't even powered up the PC in 2 years, but it was bought brand new and the hard drive is a brand and model known for durability, so I'm not worried about that. If I ever need to relocate, I'll move the whole safe, so there's no need to check if the seed is there.
393  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will Argentina Be The Next El Salvador To Accept Bitcoin As Legal Tender? on: November 21, 2023, 06:58:29 PM
I don't expect him to do that. What's important for me and many bitcoiners around the world is the fact that a libertarian has become a president, contrary to what many other countries in South America did when they allowed socialists and communists to lead them. Not only a libertarian but a supporter of independent money.

What does it change? He may not have enough leverage to make bitcoin a legal tender, or stop the money printing, but there are other things he'll change for sure.
First of all you won't see bitcoin ownership, mining and trading banned or restricted in any way. You will be able able to safely invest.
It's possible, even very likely that bitcoiners will see tax cuts in Argentina, which could influence migration.
The president is a person who appears in the media all the time. He's going to put ideas of freedom everywhere he appears and I'm sure he's going to mention bitcoin too. This is going to have enormous impact on people who are still deciding if this is some imaginary money or a real payment system and investment asset.
394  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: "Why haven't the earliest participants sold their Bitcoin, and some haven't even on: November 21, 2023, 06:53:22 PM
Apologies to be blunt, but I believe the answer falls something along the lines of:  "None of your business".

When it's your money, you can wonder about what to do with it.  If it's not yours, then what the owner is or isn't doing with it is of no concern to you.

+1

I'm not an OG by any means, but I was up over x60k on my investment in the 2021 bull market and barely sold anything, so I can understand why someone who was up even more decided not to do it.
I know OP might be more interested about people who held bitcoin when it was worth $1, but I know that if we went to $100k somewhere next year, I'd still hold bitcoin.

OP probably comes from a family where owning $100k is a big thing, but not all of us do. Many people live in houses worth 10 or more bitcoin (at current price) and drive cars worth a few coins as well.
The safety that owning an independent asset like bitcoin gives you might be more important to them than some more fiat money in the bank.
395  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Question for those who loose too frequently in gambling on: November 21, 2023, 06:37:48 PM
I don't know any gamblers who only lose. It's in the casino's best interest not to allow such things to happen, but if I were in such situation, I'd probably be either entertainment-focused, or desperate.

People who care only about entertainment go to casino, play, lose and go out because for them it's a way to unload after a busy day at work.
People who are desperate see gambling as the only way out of their financial problems and they keep coming back despite losing, hoping their bad luck will change.

396  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Changpeng Zhao (CZ) has resigned as Binance CEO. on: November 21, 2023, 06:25:06 PM
Yes News is coming from all over the crypto news pages. BNB coin was looking good pumped from 250 to 272$ but suddenly down to 250 with same speed because of this news. More blood coming because this news is quite new and many investors are still unaware of it. BTC also dumped now. Is this will be the end of Binance or everything will become normal. This will be big question now how Binance team manage current situation.

I read this one from watcher guru

Quote
JUST IN: #Binance    CEO CZ pleads guilty to violating criminal anti-money laundering requirements.

Bitcoin is trading in the same channel it's been for the last 3 weeks, it hasn't "dumped" as you call it.

2 days ago it was at 46.4 and now it's 46.9, somebody needs to have their eyes checked Wink

IMO CZ was shady, didn't like what he was doing with all the listing and delisting of altcoins. He listed what he wanted to go up in price and delisted what he wanted to put a pressure on. I bet they were trading the listing news. Also, the whole thing with "safu" and the fact he was lending money to that scammer SBF...
397  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Raising children in this current society on: November 17, 2023, 08:31:12 PM
Home schooling can work up to a certain age but to get to know society school is the best place and as a parent will only nurture the kids with the best thing in all the way. So they never got exposed to the reality of the world which is why they can't able to face it when reality hits them hard. Give all your love as you wish but also teach them the reality of this world which is never going to be as sweet as we behave to our kids.

You're right and I believe that it's important to spend time with your kids at young age, where the personality develops at rapid pace and a child learns the fastest. I see so many people make the mistake of putting kids in day care since the age of 1 and then hey wake up to a teenager they share no connection with. A child that escapes from home to spend time with friends because the world is familiar and home is not. I want my child to value home and family the most and know there's always support and understanding waiting there.

I'm not going to home school her into her teenage years, although I feel like doing that on your own before primary school is a must these days.
People tend to think that home schooled children are soft, unprepared for the real world, but they aren't. You send kids to all the extracurricular activities they want, but they can choose what they want to do and get a like-minded group of friends there.
398  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2023-11-14] If you created a wallet before 2016, your money may be at risk on: November 17, 2023, 08:14:49 PM
Unbelievably large text wall to explain what could literally fit in two sentences. Online wallets were not secure 10 years ago, and they are not even today. Anyone who stores their private keys in such a way is only gambling with high odds of losing.

And what kind of website is it that supposedly checks whether a wallet is vulnerable or will become vulnerable in the future, and for this check it asks for information such as name and surname, e-mail and public key? Do not enter such information anywhere, it is only a threat to your privacy.

Exactly. They haven't found anything that people who, like the article says, were around before 2016 haven't known.

Quote
Millions more haven’t been told, often because their wallets were created at cryptocurrency websites that have gone out of business.

This used to be a big issue. I don't remember when exactly, but it was popular for people to make vanity addresses using these sites and you could have your own name in it, but a year or so later the coins begun to disappear and people came to a conclusion that the owner of the site was making an exit scam with all the people's money.

Bottom line, when someone makes an address for you, it's a scam.
399  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Raising children in this current society on: November 16, 2023, 08:36:14 PM
Being a parent is not easy either and with the current work environment they have to spent more time doing their duties for their bosses than their loved ones because money is crucial for everything. And mostly both parents has to go for the job to meet their needs so the kid is actually brought by a third person.

Teachers play a vital role but they also forget their responsibility of teaching discipline is a basic manner.

I agree, which is why me and my wife are basically a pair of teachers for our child. We haven't been working as teachers most of our lives because there were more profitable trades out there, but we have the necessary education. I've noticed that our daughter is doing great when it comes to all the basic skills at very young age. She remembers stories and tells them from memory, sings songs, recognizes letters and numbers. We're not pushing her or anything, but we've decided not to send her to day care and instead we work shifts and spend time with her at home.

Quote
But in all prayer is the strongest weapon

This is Bullshit! you need to take responsibility for whatever happens.

I agree. We don't teach our child how to pray. In a time of need she should seek smart solutions, not help from a higher power.
400  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Have your own casino. on: November 16, 2023, 08:16:50 PM
The problem with a gambler operating a gambling business will only arise if he doesn't know how to manage the business very well since gambling is like every other business if you allow too much personal involvement,

You're not talking about a gambler but an addict. These are different. You can be a gambler and not an addict, and you can be an addict, but not a gambler. Wink
It's like you're trying to give business advice to someone you don't know, who hasn't even started this, but try to think of possible problems that may never arise.
Calm down about it, he's either going to make it, or not and will face a lot of problems along the way that you'll never be able to predict.
