1121  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What makes Countries More Powerful Than Others on: January 16, 2023, 01:51:30 PM
GDP and military strength are the only two metrics that matter.

Military strength essentially being how many nuclear weapons you have. Normally the world wouldn't take a country like Russia seriously because their economy was failing for years under Putin and their military was weak -- only such problem being they had more nukes than any other country in the world so we're forced to look at Russia as if they have power.

Their power is overestimated because they aren't maintaining most of their equipment and that includes nukes. A great example of Russian maintenance is the state in which their carrier is. They had at least 2 big fires on it and it was supposed to get refitted but is inoperable for years now and even Russian sources say it's not going to be fit for service at least until 2024. In reality that's probably never and it's eventually going to be scrapped, because who's going to operate a ship that uses oil fired steam boilers in 2024, when the rest of the world has nuclear warships.

Countries can be powerful in many ways. They can have large economies, armies, technology they're trading. China is powerful because it has enormous industry and companies from around the world use their facilities to produce stuff. On the other hand, North Korea has nukes and nobody respects it, so nuclear arsenal is not the only factor that counts. Russia is not powerful because it has nukes but because it's the largest country in the world and 9th largest in population but with the number Russians dying or fleeing from the country it may soon fall from that position.
1122  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC Pumping After The Arrest of Sam on: January 16, 2023, 01:23:02 PM
This is old news. Sam is already out on bail and is not coming back to jail unless he tries to flee and gets caught or commits another crime while on bail.
If there's any connection between FTX and bitcoin pump it's that the liquidators claim to have found most of the money that used to be considered "lost" by FTX. It appears they still had over $5B in various assets lying around but due to their bad management they didn't know what is where.
I'm just waiting for them to announce that FTX really wasn't insolvent and Sam the idiot forgot where he kept the money Cheesy

P.S. The real reason for the pump was a short squeeze on exchanges.

1123  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Don't be greedy – a short goose story on: January 15, 2023, 06:57:32 PM
I've heard this story and also seen bitcoin compared to the goose that lays golden eggs.
That said, the story can be interpreted in a different way: don't be too greedy, sell your coins when you're in profit because most investors usually lose. Be in profit, even if it's just 10%. Don't hope for 200% as you may never get it.

Being a hodler myself, I prefer your way of seeing things, OP. I'm not going to give my bitcoin away for a fraction of its ATH price. The lower it goes below the ATH the more stubborn I'll be. If they want my bitcoins they'll have to offer an arm and a leg Cool
1124  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: betting against the Public, is this strategy working? on: January 15, 2023, 06:12:49 PM
I've known this strategy for years but I knew it as putting money on the underdog. I often did it in football when there was a bunch of matches in a single week. Say we all had $100 to bet and my friends would usually split it in 2 and bet 50 on each of the 2 teams they liked the best and expected to win, while I'd bet $20 on 5 matches, always betting for the underdog. The results were sometimes funny as they'd lose 1 and win 1, winning maybe $20 on the whole thing, while I'd lose 4 and win only 1, but I'd still get ahead, getting $50 out of it even though I lost 4 bets.

Try it also on MMA matches putting all money on every underdog in a single event and see how it goes. Often a single win will get you far ahead.
1125  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Paper wallet for BTC used to be the best on: January 15, 2023, 05:50:37 PM
Paper wallets taken literally are bad because paper is easily destroyed. If you want a similar thing, use a steel wallet. It costs less than $100 and is reusable. You can put your seed in there and screw the wallet to save it. The wallet should withstand water and fire damage.
There are also wallets that you engrave or stamp.

Personally, I use a ledger hardware wallet. I have it since 2019 and it works well.
I also have electrum desktop wallet that I use for fast payments and holding smaller amounts of btc (below 0.1). I feel that it's safe enough for such small amounts.
1126  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Will Russia really run out of weapons for world war they've been for in decades? on: January 13, 2023, 08:22:49 PM
I even heard about this from the British and American media a few months ago, they claimed that Russia's arsenal is running out and will not be enough to prolong the war until the end of 2022. But then what? Ukraine was constantly attacked with high-precision cruise missiles and made Ukraine face a lot of difficulties when its energy facilities were crippled by Russia. It can be said that it was Western intelligence that harmed Ukraine. No one knows how many weapons Russia has, it's all lies by the Western media.

They were using a lot of their Kalibr missiles to strike Kiev and there were reports that in the first half of 2022 they had less than 100 of them left.
Since there were many launches since then and we even have videos of Ukrainians shooting down Kalibr missiles with MANPADS, we can safely say that Russians are running low.
As for the lies, there are intelligence unts assigned to watching and counting every single piece of armor, every ship and plane. Do you really think that NATO forces didn't have spies in Russia long before the war in Ukraine? Both sides know a lot about their armaments and what the Ukrainians didn't know they got from hundreds of Russian PoWs.

If Russia was doing good supply-wise its soldiers wouldn't be running with Mosins and using armor plates made of road signs.
1127  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Video how i turn 0.3 ethereum into 0.6 ethereum in dice on: January 13, 2023, 07:48:55 PM
I saw a video yesterday of some kid trying to show off his dice skills.  He ended up losing around $1,800 in about 10 seconds, bankrupting himself and sending him into tears.  I would say that gambling strategies work until they don't, and the cruel part is when they stop working they usually take everything you thought you had once made with them leaving you feeling stupid for thinking you had a strategy to beat the casino in the first place.  It happens to everyone who tries it eventually.  That's just how odds work.  However, if you can trick desperate people into thinking you have a working system, then you can sell it to them, which is the only way gambling schemes ever truly make money.

That's true about the strategies working until they no longer do. That would be even more true if OP had any strategy. If we watch his progress he did not make any, went all in and won, tried to continue but was losing and quit. So his gambling was something like loss, win loss, win, all in win, loss, let's call it a day. I could record a similar video cut from the middle of my gambling. Keep going all in until I win, not show any of my big loses and start a thread boasting about that one time I doubled my money. That would be a waste of time but some people need a a boost of confidence.
1128  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: How do you calculate house edge...? on: January 13, 2023, 06:59:15 PM
...if it isn't stated by casino beforehand, and sometimes it's stated only for dice and not for other games (examples being card games, roulette, slots), in such cases how is it to be calculated?

Here's a good explanation of how house edge works and can be calculated. It contains examples for various games.
https://easy.vegas/gambling/house-edge-calculation

If you don't want to do the math and the casino doesn't give any hints, your best option is to choose a different one that is a bit more transparent.
1129  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Gambling addiction touched forum users in a very sad way... on: January 13, 2023, 06:16:22 PM
More than gambling addiction, it seems like a cold blooded scam! The seller intentionally did this with a plan it seems! Gambling addiction could be one of the reasons but this one doesn't look like one typical case. It looks like a well planned scam.

Now due to the nature of cryptocurrency, it will be extremely difficult to find that person who staged this entire incident. All the best!

I also think that it was a planned scam. He was supposed to destroy all private keys but somehow months after selling the wallets happened to find a bunch of them?
He intentionally kept them because "what if I need them one day, what if someone deposits a million dollars?" What's done is done, the guy is never coming back after this.
Personally, I'd never hold bitcoins on such a wallet. In my hands it would only have a decorative purpose. It's a collectible, not a normal wallet.
1130  Economy / Speculation / Re: Is the $17,000+ bitcoin price breakout benchmark to new price direction on: January 12, 2023, 03:55:48 PM
I'm not excited at all since we're still below 20k. I had high hopes for bitcoin in 2021, but that was until we broke the historical ATH to the downside and did not bounce back, like we like to do when the low point is temporary. Anything below 20k is a tragedy for the price, for miners and the whole industry.
I'm still a holder and I know bitcoin will be above 100k one day, but since we fell lower than expected, we could argue that the lowest in the last 10 years when it comes to moving averages, I don't expect anything big to happen before the halving. It's going to be great if we go back to 25k this year, but that's probably all she's got.

1131  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are you still holding your coins #btc on: January 12, 2023, 03:44:31 PM
I didn't sell any coins below 40k USD, although I did sell some in 2021. My strategy is going DCA when the price is low and reverse DCA when it's high. I was buying coins in 2018 and held through 2019 and 2020, adding only money that I got from signature campaigns. When we broke 20k in late 2020 I switched into reverse DCA, buying stuff with my bitcoin every month, using about 1% of my holdings every time bitcoin reached an important level like 25k, 30k, 35k, and so on. When we fell from 70k back to 40 I stopped selling and switched back into accumulating when we went to 30k. I've been buying and saving up ever since at every important level with my highest buys being 32k and lowest 16k. I'm not planning to spend anything as long as it's below 40k, even if it takes another 2 years of accumulation.
1132  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Can players bet on their own games on: January 12, 2023, 03:30:33 PM
Depends on the jurisdiction. Like some people have mentioned, in some countries players can't bet at all, in others they can bet on themselves, but not against. I'm sure this is often circumvented as if I were a player forbidden to bet on myself, I'd give some money to my friends and have my them bet on me. Most bans and limits are ridiculous and I wouldn't support any of them. It's up to every person what they decide to do with their money. If they cheat and lose on purpose this should be noted by referees, not by some banker who watches your account to see if you gamble or not.
1133  Economy / Reputation / Re: I've been hacked (Electrum 4.3.2) on: January 12, 2023, 01:24:57 PM
I do not want to offend you, but if you do not understand something, it does not mean at all that it is superfluous. Given what people advise the OP, it is the absence of various programs and games that is desirable for a computer that conducts financial activities. Other than that, you won't believe how beautiful and convenient Linux can be, unlike Windows. It also has graphics to create a pleasant interface, although most of its users hardly need them.

I do not feel offended, we all have our habits. What I wanted to point out is that Julerz12 did not have his coins stolen because he used windows. Recommending him to switch to linux as a countermeasure is like advising a driver who had an accident in a toyota to buy a volvo because they're safer. 99% of the time it's not the car, it's the driver.
Ultimately it comes down to what you do on your computer, how you use it, not to the OS. The recent situation with lukedashjr can be used as an example.

It's great that Julerz likes his linux. If he decides to stay with it, good for him, I'm sure it will improve his security. That said, if you get hacked or get your coins stolen because of a keylogger, or address switcher, or whatever else, changing the OS should not be your first priority. The OS is not the reason you were targeted. Millions of people around the world use windows or iOS and never get anything stolen. I still have coins that I got in 2015 and never had a single security breach, despite using windows all the time.
1134  Economy / Reputation / Re: I've been hacked (Electrum 4.3.2) on: January 12, 2023, 10:33:18 AM
Also what have you done to mitigate the existing attack?
Wiped the drives. New Os (which will probably be wiped again for Linux). Changed a lot of passwords. Did some meditation to clear my mind. Drank a lot of coffee.

I recommend you buy a good anti virus like Norton or Kaspersky. IMO linux is an overkill if you haven't used it before. It's a bit more secure but you sacrifice some of the looks of windows and its compatibility with different programs and games. I also find windows much easier to use, more user-friendly. Ultimately it comes down to your cyber hygiene, not the OS that you're using. If you download infected files from the web, click on phishing links and carry data from other computers on USB drives, you will get data breaches sooner or later, regardless of what OS you decide to use.
I assume you know all these things, but haven't turned them into habits yet. As cruel as it may sound, being hacked is a great wake up call. My friend got all his data encrypted by malware and that was his time to start being more careful. Most people don't use any security until they get shit stolen.
1135  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why Would Anyone Be Against Self Defense? on: January 11, 2023, 08:16:18 PM
Allowing self-defence such as carrying a gun legally will just make people fearsome about making a commotion. People with bad intentions can use self-defence to assault someone legally by just provoking there target.

This is a common argument used by gun haters. "What if someone has a gun and I don't and that someone shoots me?" First there's this thing called permits. Gun access should be free, but only when you've passed some tests, weren't jailed for a serious crime, underwent a course that taught you basic gun safety.
When you take your gun out in public you should be aware that someone else may carry and you can get killed. Allowing people to carry changes things because there won't be situations like that in Norway where guns aren't allowed and Breivik kept shooting people for hours because he was the only one with a gun and nobody could fight him. People were hiding, waiting to be slaughtered. This is a good example that banning guns won't stop criminals from obtaining them.

Quote
I believe you will not need self-defence if guns are not allowed to carry by anyone except by the police and other military units.

What's the response time of the police in your area? I live about 3km from the nearest town and it takes a minimum of 5 minutes before the police can arrive at my house. Usually it's 10 (checked).
Imagine sitting there for 10 minutes, waiting for the police, while the robbers steal your shit. They could literally rape your wife and kill you both before the police arrives. I'd rather have a gun.
1136  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Streamer and Crypto Guru Gambles Away Investor Funds on: January 11, 2023, 07:57:59 PM
Another one bites the dust. I don't get why there's so many scumbags in this space and all of them show their faces trying to make you feel like they're legit and honest but it doesn't take a lot to make them turn. Mashinsky from Celsius, Do Kwon, SBF... People should learn that there's no investing in personal endeavors in this space. When you're sending money to someone in hopes that you'll make money this way you're not investing, you're donating!
I don't believe that people will ever learn to be careful with cryptocurrencies, no matter how many scammers make money on their stupidity.
1137  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Woman won $43million but was offered a steak dinner instead of her winnings on: January 11, 2023, 07:30:21 PM
I wonder how much they settled for. It had to be enough for her not to pursue the legal route.
I agree with both sides here. The casino could argue and prove that none of their machines are set to allow even 10 m. wins, not to mention 43 m. You really can prove that there was a mistake and I remember a case where a guy put a boat on an online auction and allowed the instant buy by mistake and some guy came and bought it for really low money like 1k USD for a boat that was worth 100k or whatever. Bottom line, the seller refused to sell and the buyer sued him and lost. The court compared prices of similar boats and said that since the paid amount was so low, not even 10% of the market price, the seller could refuse the deal.

On the other hand, she won and even if the amount wasn't that high they should've settled for less. If I were the manager I'd offer anything to appease her like casino credit, free games, free meals and drinks, discounts, whatever. A simple dinner would be like a slap in the face so I'm not surprised she chose to sue them.
1138  Economy / Economics / Re: WEF On Cryptocurrencies: Crypto is here to stay on: January 09, 2023, 06:38:19 PM
I don't see many similarities between dot com bubble and bitcoin. There's a lot of similarities between it and altcoins because many of them have no value and got invested in because they weree cheap, well promoted and offered better profit than bitcoin. People thought that they have to choose altcoins since bitcoin is too expensive for them. The crash is also much different because bitcoin's fall is the result of monetary tightening. That tightening flushed out bad actors which produced some negative press and that scared new investors but it doesn't mean this will continue. Once this cleansing is over we should get back on track.
1139  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Exchanges lie to you! on: January 08, 2023, 10:36:25 PM
Is this an ad popup on the coinbase wallet?

It was on their site on the right of your user panel.
It may also be in the wallet, I don't use it. I don't also use coinbase much but I have an account there.

There needs to be a way to educate newbies though. Exchanges don’t do it do they, their business model relies on naive newbies storing their crypto on their exchanges.
They are using the FTX drama to get people scared and send them more money.
1140  Other / Beginners & Help / Exchanges lie to you! on: January 08, 2023, 11:03:26 AM
I feel like this is a new trend where exchanges are trying to make users feel like holding coins on their own devices is risky.

This and what CZ said about the 99% of people and self-custody are lies. I have an opposite claim. 99% of people who lost cryptocurrency are people who willingly sent it to a scammer, either an exchange, a cloud mining service, a bitcoin doubler or a fake mixer.
Your crypto is not safe in the hands of someone else!
