361  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What risk is there creating a cold storage on a public computer considering... on: January 21, 2021, 11:28:32 PM
Tails is designed for privacy primarily
This is what they would like you and everybody else to believe.
But if you dive a little bit deeper then you will come up with a different conclusion.
Tails is designed and maintained by the NSA, and is funded by the government.
Follow the money.

I hope this is a joke.

People seem to love conspiracy theories and spreading them without any proof. I personally I'm sick and tired of them.

I mean, it is funny to listen to conspiracy theories. But some people are just delusional  Cheesy
Weak minds are getting caught by that.

Also...which would be more secure for the purpose of above...Linux live non-persistent USB...or...Tails?

Tails is a linux distro just as others are.
It might be pre-configured for more privacy etc.. but if you keep it offline anyway, it doesn't matter.

Just make sure to verify the signature of the downloaded .iso and you are good to go.

Couldn't find an answer, whats the "-choosedatadir commandline switch" ?

It is a startup parameter.

Either 1) start the software (in this case: core) via the command line and add -choosedatadir at the end
or 2) right-click the shortcut -> details and edit the exeuction path by adding -choosedatadir at the end. Remember to remove this after starting it using that parameter. Otherwise you will be asked each time.

Electrum) raten. Ledger Live ist schrecklich.
364  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: .05BTC (~$1,700) to whoever helps me successfully extract my BTC from CLI wallet on: January 20, 2021, 12:04:58 PM
go to:
https://www.bitaddress.org/ (it is known and safe - you can turn off internet if you like)

No, it is not safe.
Stop making such retarded statements.

It is never safe to enter private information into a website, regardless of whether you "turn off the internet" or not..
365  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Unconfirmed transaction on: January 19, 2021, 07:37:17 PM
How to act on “ Transaction invalid: some outputs that it attempts to spend have been already spent or are no longer valid.”

This means the transaction is invalid because the outputs do not exist (or are already spent).
Basically, you can not create that transaction with these UTXOs.

What wallet are you using? Is it fully synced?

its status has changed invalid and the amount sent added back to balance? I thought it has returned,   but in few hours it is send again automatically and again it has 0 confirmstion/unconfirmed.

I doubt the same transaction has been successfully broadcasted, since it is invalid  Huh
What is the transaction id?
366  Local / Anfänger und Hilfe / Re: Walletfrage zu neuem Coreclient on: January 18, 2021, 01:35:58 PM
Die von dir gewählte Gebühr war 1 sat/vB also 255 Satoshi für die komplette Transakion, was definitiv zu wenig ist derzeit.

Oh, stimmt.

https://blockchair.com/bitcoin/transaction/37dfca3c7a9c0e3ecea94afd6534cca8309baa579258e2e21859ee9c575ac144

367  Local / Projektentwicklung / Re: Unterstützung für unser aktuelles Projekt on: January 18, 2021, 10:08:37 AM
Muss romanengel hier zustimmen.

Was meinst du mit "irgendwo sehen".

Kleines Beispiel:

1 BTC -> 0.2 BTC + 0.8 BTC (change)

In deiner Transaktionshistorie siehst du: -0.2 BTC.

369  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Can't access my money because of the derivation path on: January 18, 2021, 09:38:56 AM
And your friend is 100% sure that they saw this address and the balance within their Coinbase wallet app? Huh

Is it possible to import (watch only) addresses into the wallet?
Or does coinbase allow to import private keys to be used in the same "account", basically creasting a HW wallet + single keys/addresses?

If so, he might have imported an address from the standard "i send you bitcoin, here import that addresss" type of scam.

I mean.. i wouldn't be surprised if the coinbase wallet would allow to add addresses/keys to the HD wallet..
370  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to determine whether an address starting with '3' is SegWit or Not? on: January 18, 2021, 09:34:20 AM
So i was right and you can not know it unless you have the private key and made that transaction. Wink

No, you were not right.
It seems you misunderstand something.

Read my response again:
You can not tell if it will be Multisig or Segwit unless you hold the private key(s) and thus know the type.

You don't need to know the private key.
When the output is being spend, the unlocking script has to be revealed. And once you observe this, you can tell whether it is P2WPKH nested into P2SH or a multisig P2SH. Or even something completely different.

However, if the UTXO is not spent yet, there is no way of knowing this other than having the unlocking script created by yourself (i.e. you are the recipient).

So, to summarize and to reference your statement:

1) You don't necessarily need the private key. Observing the unlocking script being published (a.k.a. the output is being spend) is enough.

2) Even if you made the transaction creating the UTXO, you don't know anything about the unlocking script.
As a sender, you just use the address provided by the recipient to to create that new UTXO. You, as a sender, don't know wheter this is multisig or P2WPKH nested into P2SH. It is irrelevant whether you or someone else created the transaction/UTXO.
371  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Moved coins to armory before downloading Bitcoin Core on: January 17, 2021, 06:56:43 PM
Then exporting that one private key indeed is the easiest way for you.

To export your private key:
  • Open armory and go to Wallet Properties
  • -> Backup this Wallet
  • -> Select "Export Key Lists"
  • -> Click "Export Key Lists"
  • -> Select "Address String" and "Private Key (Plain Base58)

You'll see the address and the private key.

To import it into another wallet, download any lightweight client (e.g. electrum) (please verify the signature, take these 3 minutes to learn how to do it) and import the private key by creating a new wallet:
  • -> "Import Bitcoin address or private keys"
  • -> Enter your private key with the prefix matching the address you want to recover:
    • p2pkh: for addresses starting with 1..
    • p2wpkh: for addresses starting with bc1..
    • p2wpkh-p2sh: for addresses starting with 3..
  • -> Click "Next"

You'll need to wait a few seconds until electrum is synchronized and afterwards you can spend your BTC.

If you want to keep electrum: Create a new wallet and backup the mnemonic code.

We have a user in the german part of the board who would need urgent help.
Could one of you step in and help with the following TX?

43165280595cefff6f8a57208375ea30e82648880da0b2894fb4cb922456fe3e

Thanks a lot!

It was auto-confirmed and was mined on 15th of January.  Thanks .

Thank you for the review Smiley
Since it was urgent, we triggered the transaction ourselves via CPFP.
Thanks anyway and may come back to your offer here in a different way.

373  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to determine whether an address starting with '3' is SegWit or Not? on: January 17, 2021, 05:13:11 PM
Okay so tell me what type this address is then: 38AruHmY94Yih9cvc8d144Z8BHZnUDSH35

As i have mentioned.. since none of these 4 UTXO's has been spend, no script has been revealed.
And therefore only the person who created that unlocking script knows whether it is a multisig P2SH or P2WPKH nested into P2SH or any other P2SH.

The 4 UTXO contain:
Code:
OP_HASH160 4714deea7bae98a2ae990bd1ff059911529eddff OP_EQUAL

Therefore, all we know is that the unlock script's hash will be 4714deea7bae98a2ae990bd1ff059911529eddff.
But we don't know what kind of script this is.
374  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Moved coins to armory before downloading Bitcoin Core on: January 17, 2021, 05:07:37 PM
What do you want to achieve?

Do you want to get core running such that you can use core/armory in the future?
Or do you just want to quickly access your BTC?

If it is the latter, the easier option would be to export that single private key (you received just one transaction, right?) and import it into a lightweight client (e.g. electrum).
I'd recommend this option if you don't want to use core/armory at all, but just want to quickly access your coins and have it as easy as possible.
375  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Cant get new install of Armonry to work on: January 17, 2021, 05:04:32 PM
Weird, i never saw that error message before.

Please answer these questions:
  • What operating system are  you using ?
  • What version of armory did you install ?
  • Where did you download armory from ?
  • What exactly did you do, that you got that message ?

Further, if possible, provide a screenshot and upload the armory log files (you can use pastebin or any other similar service and provide us the link).
376  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Typing the seed - How safe is it? on: January 17, 2021, 04:59:56 PM
Is this safer than typing the seed?

In theory this is completely irrelevant.
If your device is compromised, it is compromised. Regardless of whether you enter the mnemonic code into an application or open your wallet file.

But why is it so dangerous using a seed several times?
You also do this with passwords on websites (bank account, paypal,...)

Do you mean that you use the same password across multiple sites? If that's the case, you might want to overthink what you are doing... That's definitely not the proper way.

It is "more dangerous" to enter the mnemonic code multiple times if you enter them into different devices or if there is a risk that your device got compromised in the meantime.

I think a hardware wallet would be a better alternative for you. It is easier to use than an offline setup and less error-prone.
377  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Old bitcoin Core Software from 2011 on: January 17, 2021, 04:47:42 PM
I cant emphasize this enough: Make a backup of your wallet.dat file before doing anything else.

Afterwards, you have 2 options to access your coins.
The first is to keep bitcoin core and let it sync. This might take some time and needs ~330+ GB of hard drive space.
This option takes more time, but requires less work from your side. After the syncing process is finished, you can access and send your coins.

The second option is to use core to export the private keys and use another wallet (e.g. electrum) to import them (make sure to verify the signature of the downloaded file!). Afterwards you can access and send your coins.
This option takes less than 20 minutes but is more sophisticated and requires more work from you.
378  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to determine whether an address starting with '3' is SegWit or Not? on: January 17, 2021, 04:40:57 PM

379  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: how can i create bitcoin wallet and deposit on it on: January 17, 2021, 04:33:30 PM
i made a wallet in bitcoinofficial.org but i don't trust them yet "i didn't found enough reviews about it", i want to create wallet on coinbase or blockchain but they required an ID to start using it. is it okay to add it there ?? since i should deposit using my credit card.

First, you should educate yourself about bitcoin.

The fact that you chose a completely unknown website as "your wallet" paired with that you now think to use coinbase or blockchain with your ID shows that you are not well informed enough.

Browse this forum and check bitcoin.org.
Answer for yourself what kind of wallet you want or need. And stay away from web wallets or custodial ones. Choose a desktop- or mobile wallet.

Generally, electrum is a good desktop wallet for newcomers. You might want to look into it.

Wieso kam nix an?
