501  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] - Blockchain on a USB stick on: June 21, 2014, 02:28:18 PM
As someone who can only barely keep up with the blockchain's current growth, I was actually thinking of offering this for a while, but obviously have limitations which'd make that pretty difficult. Cheesy Good on you for taking initiative. One of my greatest fears is ending up with a corrupt blockchain I need to re-download from scratch, so it's nice to know there's somewhere to turn if that happens.
Thanks!
My biggest issue I think is proving that the stick is virus free. If anyone has a suggestion on that let me know, otherwise it will just have to be trust.

I only have a 1mb DSL connection at home so I hated redownloading the block chain. I assumed others were in the same situation, which is why I decided to offer this. I do have access to a 50mb connection if I need to get other chains or anything.
502  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] - Blockchain on a USB stick on: June 20, 2014, 08:46:32 PM
Ive seen this mentioned a number of times but never saw anyone start selling them, so I'll do it!

I am selling a copy of the blockchain on a 32GB USB 3.0 stick. The current Bitcoin blockchain is about 21GB which is a fair amount to download if you have a slower connection or a connection that has a monthly cap. There are other wallets you can use that do not require the entire blockchain but if you would like to stick to the original Bitcoin Core wallet this is for you. Plus you get a nice 32GB USB 3 drive.

I only have a few full blockchains at the moment but can download more if there is demand.

Bitcoin
Litecoin
Feathercoin
Primecoin
Dogecoin
Vertcoin

The price is $30 (~.0459BTC) for a single blockchain and $3 (~.0046BTC) for each additional blockchain added to that drive (until the drive is full). Shipping to the US is included, international will be extra.

So if you wanted all 6 listed above it would total $45 (~.0689BTC) shipped.

I will accept BTC, LTC, FTC, XMP, or Vert.

One question Im sure I'll get is "How do I know there is no virus on this stick?"
My only answer is "Give me a way to prove to you it is clean and I'll try and make it happen." My computer is clean and free of virus/malware, it is a fairly fresh install of Windows with an up to date virus protection.
Ive been a member here on this forum for nearly 2 years, I realize this does not give me a lot of credit but its something.

If you are interested PM me what blockchain you want, a shipping address and what crypto you want to use. I'll reply with a payment address and will let you know when it ships.

Thanks
AmDD

good idea, i like it. when i need this i'll contact you.

Thanks for the support!

So anyway, back on topic....

Ive thought many times about doing this very thing. I just wish I was a salesman. I couldnt sell ice to a guy in hell. Sad

maybe you can stick around ('watch' this topic) as others who hav some true desire to get shops near their home to accept bitcoin can hlp you come up with some easy to use tips. even a few of you may wish to develop a leaflet that explains bitcoin. or even one of you be an all access skype/email consultant that businesses can go to where if it leads to a sale, that remote consultant gets a slice of your labour fee as a thanks.

take it any direction you please.

AmDD:
how many shops in your town do you personally have that you think will benefit from adopting bitcoin.
how many of those have you even asked if they accept bitcoin.
do you know enough about bitcoin to explain it man to man (dont think of it as a sales pitch)
do you know how bitpay works?

There are quite a few here that could benefit from Bitcoin. There is one restaurant who recently started accepting Dogecoin, actually.
I have personally asked very few if they accept it.
Yes, I understand it enough to explain it to someone else.
I know the principle but Ive never been on the merchant side of it to know all the details.

Im a pretty quiet and shy person which makes selling anything tough. I did email one of the local shops yesterday, explaining Bitcoin and why they should adopt it. The reply was better than I expected but nothing for sure yet. They are interested in learning about it so thats   a plus. I also foundout a friends uncle owns a bar and grill in town. Im going to see if I can have my buddy talk to him about Bitcoin.

A thought I had about the tablet thing, you can find used smart phones for pretty cheap here. The screen isnt as big but it could work just the same. They could either get a data plan for it or just setup wifi in the shop and not have a monthly fee. Something like a GS3 is probably $30 used...

If your name is Jesus or Nathan, I have not received a Bitcoin address from you (that I can find at least).

So I can go ahead and send out the payment in a second, I have generated an address for you guys and will hold the BTC there until I hear from you.

I have also emailed you both.

The payment will be going out soon.. I am just waiting on the block chain to catch up. Still 6 weeks behind, so it may take a bit.

EDIT: It has been sent, sorry it took so long. The change from Bitcoind to Bitcoin Core messed up my payment commands because it was installed in a different folder. Furthermore I had a silly error in the command that took me forever to find. 6 hours later... it is paid. I apologize that everything else on the to do list will need to wait until tomorrow since this took so long. Thanks for understanding.

Great to see you are making amends. I wait for the day when your debts are settles and you can return to helping out the community.

+1

Im not planning on mining with it, just running the pool there.

Thanks for the suggestions, I ended up going with digitalocean and it seems to be running alright there.

I figured so. Any idea what the lowest tier it will run on is?
510  Bitcoin / Pools / p2pool on free AWS tier? on: June 13, 2014, 01:17:52 AM
Has anyone tried setting up p2pool on Amazons AWS free tier? I have been trying but cant get it to work right. I think the problem is that it doesnt have enough RAM but I cant find any specifics as to how much is required. Any thoughts?
511  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Did Ghash cause the price drop? on: June 12, 2014, 09:50:12 PM
Id guess it has to do with the DPR coins.
512  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] - Blockchain on a USB stick on: June 11, 2014, 12:42:47 PM
Any estimations when the blockchain would be over 32gb ?

pretty good idea Smiley
What brand and model USB stick is it please ?

I saw a graph of the current size over time but I dont recall where I saw it. Probably wont be too long, end of the year maybe?
EDIT: here https://blockchain.info/charts/blocks-size

The ones I currently have are ADATA UV128 32GB USB 3.0
513  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] - Blockchain on a USB stick on: June 11, 2014, 02:40:34 AM
No, $3 for each additional blockchain on the stick. I'll edit the post to make that more clear. Smiley
514  Economy / Speculation / Re: We're not going anywhere, until the 51% question is answered on: June 11, 2014, 02:38:35 AM
one of the main points is Bitcoin is decentralized. Allowing one entity with a large percent of the hash rate defeats this and goes against the whole idea. I really have a hard time understanding why people dont see this as bad.
515  Economy / Speculation / Re: We're not going anywhere, until the 51% question is answered on: June 11, 2014, 01:39:56 AM
The 51% question *is* answered for those who care to understand its true ramifications

can you link me or summarize what you're implying?

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Weaknesses#Attacker_has_a_lot_of_computing_power

From the wiki:

"Since this attack doesn't permit all that much power over the network, it is expected that no one will attempt it. A profit-seeking person will always gain more by just following the rules, and even someone trying to destroy the system will probably find other attacks more attractive."

That assumes they are in control of their pool and not some third party.
The tired argument that the disincentive to the 51% attack is so great that no one would consider it... is a flawed argument that comes with the assumption that there are only rational actors on stage...

We all know that there are men who just want to watch the world burn... that 51% attack is coming, and it needs to be addressed.

Thank you and Thank you, I was going to post the exact same thing.
Just because the pool operators have no plans of a 51% attack doesnt mean the pool cant be hacked and someone else does the attack. We could bounce back after such an event but looking at other coins who have been 51%'d im not sure....

517  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Ok, but seriously how will I pay for my $250 grocery bill with bitcoin? on: June 10, 2014, 01:06:48 PM
What about merchants just accepting the risk? They do that now with cash, check and credit cards. People print and use counterfeit money everyday, people write bad checks and use stolen credit cards. The thing is not everyone does this. The few bad transactions that will happen are just part of the risk of having a business. Granted eliminating that risk would be great but how much effort is it worth?
518  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Ok, but seriously how will I pay for my $250 grocery bill with bitcoin? on: June 10, 2014, 01:30:02 AM
As a merchant you should feel safe accepting a transaction the moment you are able to see it on the network. The amount of hashpower a user would need to control in order to double spend is going to cost WAY more than the $5 coffee you are trying to buy.

I suggest you spend some time playing with my replace-by-fee tools, especially the doublespend.py script. Double-spending zeroconf transactions is really easy.

Maybe Im mistaken.... I'll have a look at these. Any other info on the topic, I dont want to derail this thread...
519  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Ok, but seriously how will I pay for my $250 grocery bill with bitcoin? on: June 10, 2014, 12:21:03 AM
As a merchant you should feel safe accepting a transaction the moment you are able to see it on the network. The amount of hashpower a user would need to control in order to double spend is going to cost WAY more than the $5 coffee you are trying to buy. And even if they did somehow control that much power (hacking a pool or similar) they will probably go after a much larger transaction to make it worth their time and in that case, for a large transaction, I would be willing to wait 10-30min for a few confirmed blocks. Buying a house, for example, isnt a process that can be done in 3sec or less anyway. So once you send the Bitcoin and fill out all the paperwork and do the inspection, the whatever.... you will have plenty of confirms saying the coin is in your wallet.

I really think people are too wrapped around the "6 confirms" thing.
520  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: DISH becomes World's largest company to accept bitcoin on: May 29, 2014, 04:55:52 PM
Will be interesting to see how active DISH customers will be once they start accepting it. I imagine DISH will announce how much they process in Bitcoin each month once it happens? Very good news for sure to have such a large company accepting Bitcoin for a regular ol monthly bill for millions and millions of people.

This is pretty awesome, and it gives a great benefit (if it's played out properly): people can order their PPV pr0n and use Bitcoin so their wife doesn't find out!

haha!

It's great news for sure to get bitcoin acceptance for one of the most common monthly bills anyone pays. It'll be even more wonderful once other television providers and cell phone carriers do so as well.

I brought this up because people call the call centers for DirecTV all the time to ask if they can pay off their pr0n bill without it showing up on their statement (ie. "can I pay it right now and act like it never happened?") so that their family doesn't find out. And people also call and claim they didn't order it and it was their son/daughter/neighbor/pet.

I can't believe that people still pay for porn. It is so widely available on the internet for free. Er that's what a friend told me anyway.  Grin

That's only good when you're playing solo. What about when you're having a mandingo party?! Think outside the box, my friend. Now you can have all the enjoyment anonymously (at least I hope?) with DISH!

Have a lot of Mandingo parties do you?

BTW: Bitcoin isn't an anonymous payment system. Cash is.

What's a mandingo party?

And you can't pay DISH with cash as far as I'm aware.

FWIW, the point wasn't anonymity in terms of who you're paying, but rather what you're paying for. A big issue with DISH/DTV/etc. is that when you do PPV, it will show up on your bill because they have to run it through the credit card. Granting the secrecy of allowing you to pay off certain items with BTC and have them removed altogether would be an awesome benefit (for others, not me).

Your right you can't pay with cash. Anonymity will never be a factor with cable service. They know where you live. Method of payment has nothing to do with what shows up on your monthly invoice. You could pay them with whole fried chickens and your bill would still say playboy channel.

It doesnt matter to me if the purchase is on the bill or not, but it would be kinda cool to click a PPV and have a QR code appear on screen allowing me to pay directly and instantly with my phone.
