it would be beyond weird if bitfinex stopped all fiat in and out and there wasn't a price difference.
the price difference will only go away once normal operations are back.
i guess maybe poeple feel like JJA, and so the longer they remain dysfunctional the wider the price difference will be.
but IMO market isn't expressing more than the relevent FUD here, no wire transfers / FEELS like GOX

bitfinex has reached nearly its all time high, while bitstamp is behind almost 80 dollars.

Nothing is wrong with Bitstamp, the only problem is with Bitfinex. Since people feel fairly secure on Bitstamp they often dump their coins there for fiat so that they can get a withdrawal quick enough, which is why the price is usually lowest. Bitcoin's Bitfinex value isn't actually backed by fiat and they can't process fiat withdrawals or even deposits on there so it's not long before it all explodes in their face. I think poeple are overly afraid because of what we've seen in the past with gox. bitfinex will probably find a new bank and survive this without too much pain... altho the situation does appear identical to the beginning of the end of gox... |

First, we can already "program BTC", i can make an app that does all kinds of fancy things given a BTC payment or whatever. so the code isn't ran by a network of nodes, not a huge deal, for almost all Practical purposes...
Second, embedding program scripts within bitcoin TX themselfs, was part of the original design, but it was left out for security reasons, obviously satoshi wanted to validate the idea of peer-2-peer cash before he blew it wide open with p2p programmable cash. aaannnddd good thing he did, because transaction malleability .
Third, Bitcoin's script language will soon be blow wide-open. the time has come! segwit will fix transaction malleability and the next steps will be soft forking in newer and more capable script versions.
and FYI, almost everyone is onboard with most parts of segwit, even BU and classic plan to do segwit to some extent, there is no debate around this issue. we all want to start exposing bitcoin scripting capabilities, this will come.
ether will forever be known as the experiment that taught us valuable lessons before we went to production.

considering how bitcoin poses an existential threat to the world's fiat money it would be HARD to believe "they" haven't tried to co-opt bitcoin somehow.
but i dont think ( however it is possible i guess ) that they tried to do what op suggests.
Instead they tried to dev there own "private blockchains" in an attempt to eventually make bitcoin irrelevant. they failed. they missed the point.

A block that has even _one_ segwit transaction takes less time to verify than the worst case block with no segwit.

You're telling me that it is possible to construct a block with a single SegWit transaction that might be less resource intensive than the largest, most resource heavy block full of worst case non-SegWit transactions imaginable? What an incredible endorsement of SegWit's powers! now you're just trolling the poor guy. he meant that replacing even just 1 TX in a block with a segwit TX will make the block validate faster. i'm not sure if thats true for a very simple TX, but generally speaking it must be true. but franky1's statement might not to be " jibberish technobabble " maybe franky is saying that in most cases replacing typical TX we find in blocks today with a segwit version of that TX will not improve the validation time of that block by very much ( since typically TX are not quadratically heavy ) so segwit provides little Effective incress in validation time while 4x the amount of TX pre-block segwit dos not solve quadratics.. it makes it 4x worse:

Don't know, don't care - it is an inherent impossibility. ^TETHER is a mastercoin spinoff~~~somewhat legit however ultimately questionable bloat to the blockchain scaling problems etc..  So Tether is something like this... There is a business that has a bank account in which there are some million dollars deposited. For each dollar they issue 1 Tether. So we must trust that they are only issuing 1 tether for each USD deposited. We also need to trust the company won't go bankrupt for whatever reason. We must also trust that no agency/goverment will seize the funds of the bank accounts, again for whatever reason. We also need to trust that even if none of the previous happens, that no intermediary bank will reject the transfer when we request the USD value. Also, there's no interest paid on the deposit and, in the best possible scenario, we will be able to recover the exact devalued USD value. I don't get it. right, but same thing for USD on an exchange. USDT is just placing that same trust you extend an exchange to tether and then you get the added bonus of being able to move USDT around ( from one exchange to another) easily you can also use USDT in OMNI's decentralized exchange. questionable bloat to the blockchain scaling problems
right, OMNI aka mastercoin creates dust TX with high fees ( because slightly bigger then normal TX ), on the blockchain it look like someone paid 20 cents to move 2 satoshis, aka Le SPAM. But when you consider someone could move 1000's of USDT for cents, this spam isn't about to go away... |

anyone got any links regarding the wells fargo connection with finex? i've seen it mentioned upthread a couple times that the Taiwanese banks blocks deposits is due to wells fargo, but seen no evidence of that. little help?

Issue 1:1 ratio between Tether and USD held in reserve. In theory, settlements would result in USD passed to the customer, Tether passed back to the originator, then Tether being destroyed. right it works just fine, but there is an element of trust, you must trust the poeple who manage Tether to hold full reserves. I think in the coming years we could see somthing very similar to USDT but issued and managed by some real bank, Or Tether will continue to grow and Become a 'real bank'; when i say "real bank" i mean the kind of bank that can legally operate with ~10% held in reserve  |
