161  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: HashFast announces specs for new ASIC: 400GH/s on: August 14, 2014, 10:57:35 PM
That's some serious marketing effort.

Yep.. They sent a test unit to Dogie and he has a review up.  The price sucks.

So, whats fair for 1.1TH these days?

Using low electricity costs and low difficulty increase, it looks like the unit will succumb to electricity costs in January 2015 after earning $728, or 1.99 BTC.

Of course, all of these numbers will turn out to be wrong.

Finally, this is some great news!

I don't understand how it will be great news.  This time tomorrow, the difficulty will be back where it was yesterday, and the hashpower will be gone again.
163  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [BTE] The Bytecoin Information Thread on: August 11, 2014, 10:44:33 PM
The difficulty has decreased 4X.
Hashpower has been re-allocated to the chain.

164  Other / Politics & Society / Re: what do you think about the way college tuitions keep increasing out of control on: August 11, 2014, 12:42:41 AM
I can't help but wonder if the consumers are getting their monies worth, or simply a degree along with debt.

That is a very good question.  There are existing numbers to answer it.

One process is as follows:

1.  Find the average income in the US of, say, a 30 year old white male with different levels of education, e.g., high school diploma and bachelor's degree.
2.  Find the prime lending rate, from public sources.
3.  Factor in the unemployment rate and the mortality rate, again from public sources.
4.  Assume that people retire at the standard retirement age.
5.  Find the income tax burden for each of the incomes.

From these numbers, you can estimate:

1.  How much additional income a college degree will yield.
2.  How much additional income tax revenue a college degree will yield.

165  Other / Politics & Society / Re: what do you think about the way college tuitions keep increasing out of control on: August 11, 2014, 12:34:14 AM
The problem with college costs is that anyone is able to get a student loan, with virtually no requirements. Even if the student is pursuing a degree with no earnings potential they will still qualify. The result of this is that students do not take price into consideration when choosing a school as they can certainly borrow money in order to attend. Another issue is the fact that colleges are pressured to be "diverse" so they offer scholarships to students who are part of a "minority" even though they are not deserving of them. This also increases the pressure of the price of tuition.

There actually are more safeguards than that.  The default rate of the institution is considered.  Institutions with high default rates lose their ability to receive funds.

166  Other / Politics & Society / Re: what do you think about the way college tuitions keep increasing out of control on: August 11, 2014, 12:22:48 AM

Corporations can get a discharge through chapter 11, but they have to effectively liquidate all of their property to do it. Whereas an individual in a chapter 11 just has to devote disposable income to a plan in order to get a discharge.

An individual can only shield so much wealth.  I think the amount is $28,000.  Beyond that, individuals also must liquidate.
167  Other / Politics & Society / Re: what do you think about the way college tuitions keep increasing out of control on: August 11, 2014, 12:19:29 AM

As for bankruptcy, student loan debt is not immune (child support is though), it is just subject to a higher standard for discharge.

What are some instances where a student loan can be discharged?
168  Other / Politics & Society / Re: what do you think about the way college tuitions keep increasing out of control on: August 11, 2014, 12:13:07 AM
For example, when I left, which is about 10 years ago, my school was about 27k/year. Now it's close to 37k. And my school is nowhere near the top schools. Employment compensation (at least in my field) hardly increased.
No wonder students are running into trouble with student loans everywhere.

The annual increase of the OP numbers.
(37 / 27) ^ (1/10) --> 1.03201, or 3.2% annual increase.

Cost of a certain house in Austin, TX
(265 / 154) ^ (1/10) --> 1.05578, or 5.6% annual increase.

In addition, tuition is only a portion of the cost that a student pays.  Tuition itself is not rising as fast as tuition.
Pay to a certain faculty, past 8 years.
(44.5 / 40.5) ^ (1/8) --> 1.01184, or 1.1% annual increase.

Your argument about prior 150% luck is useless for any new miner that might have joined a week ago.  They have zero benefit when they weren't here.

Your point could be applied to any pool.

M
I don't see excessive failsafes on other pools, that's my original concern.

I don't understand all the angst about fail-safe.  Are you somehow afraid?

170  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [6600Th] Eligius: 0% Fee BTC, 105% PPS NMC, No registration, CPPSRB (New Thread) on: August 07, 2014, 01:49:12 PM

What is the benefit of this action?
Benefit of online wallet or benefit of signing messages?

Oh sorry, the signing of messages

A signed message means the key owner approved the message.  The frequent use is to sign payment authorization, and this is transparent inside the wallet.

Another use might be with a configuration message.  If I change my payout at Eligius I can set the new donation amounts or thresholds.  When I sign that message, the Eligius software knows it was really me, and not some random griefer on the internet.

Another message that might be signed would be "Send $500 USD to John Doe, 123 Main St, Dallas in payment for 0.75 BTC"

it seems that blockchain.info's pushtx no longer functions right. instead of re-transmitting unconfirmed tx's, it is saying it already exists. (which it should only say that AFTER confirmation)

I checked whether the transaction is ok:

It appears to decode ok

172  Other / Off-topic / Re: Do you really earn more money because you went to college? on: August 01, 2014, 02:45:41 PM
In most cases yes since diploma is needed in applying for a better paying job. But it is not always the case since even you are not a college graduate, you can earn more money by being hardworking, skilled and wise.

There are over supply of college educated kids, MBA and lawyers.

Law of supply and demand will mean wages have to go down for the "elite" due to competition.

The data during recessions shows that the college educated people have low unemployment, and high school graduates have higher unemployment.

Presumably the college educated move to lower jobs, and the less educated people become unemployed.  So keep in mind that competition is a complex phenomenon, and the degree is still worthwhile.

173  Other / Off-topic / Re: Do you really earn more money because you went to college? on: July 30, 2014, 06:22:50 PM
There is actual data on this question.  A group of college graduates make more money than a matched group who don't go to college.

I think if i had that much hardware for 500 plus th,  I would build a private pool.  I think they would be more $$$ to be made.

But I could be wrong thats for sure.

Since this pool is 0% fee, your expected reward would be exactly the same. However, you'd have greater variance mining alone. So no reason to not mine into a pool.

This past year, I found 3 valid and 1 orphan blocks while mining at Eligius.  I have received all time payout of 78.90441370 BTC, and am at 97.37% shares rewarded.

If you want to use data in your discussion, access exists to microdata, and the ability to pull custom reports.
176  Other / Off-topic / Re: Do you really earn more money because you went to college? on: July 24, 2014, 04:35:13 PM
People that go to college are in average brighter, harder working, more ambitious and for more affluante families and they are meant to make more money (as a group) than people that don't go to college

If you factor in the cost of going to college will you really make more money because of the diploma you will get?

As a scientist, I wonder what data exists.  I have found this on the web.

Using table P-16 from the link.

For men aged 25 years and older, the median 2012 income was:

Code:
$18,002  Less than 9th grade
$19,780  9th through 12th grade
$31,064  12th grade graduate
$41,730  Associate degree
$56,656  Bachelor's degree
$71,364  Master's degree
$91,472  Doctoral degree

I have seen a table where this is broken down into annual age bins, instead of totals for everyone over age 25.  I have not found that this morning.

I can play a bit with these numbers.  Assume that someone will work from age 25 to age 65, or 40 years.  Assume that they can borrow money at the prime interest rate of 3.25%.

Then play a bit with the numbers.  For illustration only, pretend that using the median income and projecting out for 40 years gives good guidance.

($56,656/yr (bachelors) - $31,064/yr (high school graduate) ) / 12 (month/yr) = $2,132 / month income difference for Bachelor's.

Next, find how much money you can borrow, with a 40 year payoff of $2,132/month and 3.25% interest.  This is how much money you can pay for the degree and come out financially neutral, but still enjoy the other benefits of education, such as better health, higher home ownership, and lower involvement with law enforcement.

Code:
$572,288  highest profitable cost of bachelor's degree.
$451,076  interest paid to lender on this amount.

I view this analysis as guidance for public policy, e.g., should the government support student loans or even free college education.  This numbers are real data for groups of people, individual results will vary.  A more detailed analysis would take into account unemployment, life expectancy, family size by age, and income tax obligations.

There is no emotion involved on my end at all.

I think you're drowning in anger.  I've been there, the energy from righteous anger can help push a mighty effort.  I think it is good for you to embrace it and use it.

Cool, I've never been read by Truman Capote.  Though I'd really like to go for Morgan Freeman.

You don't seem to think that BFL will do anything because of the letter.  You think it reads a bit wimpy and over civilized.  I think you are 100% right.  The letter isn't written for BFL, it is written for the judge and the prosecutor.  It just has to address BFL and be sent to them.  It is to make the judge and prosecutor go for the kill.

It is up to you if you want to thump your chest and type in all caps, or want to cause a maximum punishment for Sonny.

PARIIALLY UNTRUTHFUL?

YOU CALLING ME A LIAR?

PUT UP OR SHUT UP!

I AM NOT IN THE MOOD!

Yes, I am.  You are going to try to make it appear that BFL is doing something that they are not by using an overseas posting shop, according to your web page, and you mention the risk of getting caught.  It is fraudulent.

You are getting down in the mud with them.  I think it will hurt your chances.

It will give the BFL people the opportunity to say that they aren't really that bad, that they are victims of a smear campaign.  It is a step backwards that gives them an advantage.

I know you're angry.  I think you should use your anger to energize your planning against BFL.  I think you are letting your anger muddy your mind, and diminish your chance for success.
