Stop.  You're wrong in several ways already.  First is trivial to explain:
A company owes more to its shareholders than *a* profit.  It *must maximise* the profit.  At least them's the laws IRL.  If you're satisfied when your investment makes a satoshi after a year, you're in the minority.

Can you point to such a law?

Just thought I'd share my nightmare experience dealing with IAFCU so far.

So I got my money refunded into my IAFCU account like many others. I actually thought that the worst was over at that point and was elated.

IAFCU sent me a debit card and NO PIN. No big deal, right? Just call them up and request a new card/PIN.

I use my debit card like a credit card.  I have bought groceries, gasoline, and meals with it.  I don't have the PIN yet either, though I am having my mail forwarded from my house to my work location.

803  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon batch [3] countdown! on: July 31, 2013, 07:07:36 AM
Anyone here knows what to add in the "more options" area?
Right now it says --real-quiet (what does this mean?)

On my batch #2, I use

--avalon-auto --avalon-freq 285-365 --avalon-temp 50

I set chip frequency at 285.  The machine starts slowly and ramps up.  Mine almost always stays between 343 and 347 MHz, each machine picks it's own characteristic frequency.

I am using the ck klovias 20130703 firmware.

Did you leave cgminer set to the default: "balanced," or change it to failover?  Any noticeable difference in average total hash rate if you did?  I am kind of scared to try balanced as I've always used failover in the past.

I tried balanced with the 3 accounts set to the same, and did not notice any difference from failover.  When the 3 accounts are set to different numbers, the 1st seems to get a little bit more hashes.

Well as long as we're making shit up, how about this made up story.

...

Did I do it right?

806  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC Batch #2 Income Sharing; arrived and hashing on: July 30, 2013, 05:16:54 PM
I disbursed a payment.

The transaction details are not as I expected them to be.  Funds were pulled from some of my addresses that bitcoind is not supposed to link with the account, and the transaction fee is not what I requested.  I don't see anything improper in the command that I issued, but now there has to be some accounting adjustment.  I will puzzle over this and issue the adjustment next Tue.  It should not affect the amount of bitcoin that you receive, only the addresses that are inputs to the transaction.

I really want this to stay easy to understand.  My approach to pushing back against the negative vibes in the bitcoin world is to be transparent, and civilized in my language.

This is the command that I issued.

~/.bitcoin$ bitcoind sendmany "Asic #2 Income Sharing Payments" '{"18RKachrcvzBHFdwzjgGK19amp77pkNBKz":3.29314456,

807  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Question about mining and FinCen on: July 29, 2013, 06:13:02 PM
In order to find a FinCEN form 107 and register, I visited many pages listed in Google (fincen form 107) and ended up at http://bsaefiling.fincen.treas.gov/Enroll_Individual_Step_01.html

I filled out a 1 page form, visited a second page at a link they provided me, and then did not see any additional actions to take.  Under business structure I indicated that I was <my name>, a natural person.

I called the BSA E-Filing Help Desk at 1-866-346-9478 where a nice baritone voice seemed to indicate that I would receive a registration number in a few days.

No body want a pre order , Avalon and Butterfly have turn out to be nothing but S..M with all their non deliveries and excuses.

My Avalon is hashing.  Statistics are visible to anyone.

Smart, honest and amicable people can exist anywhere on this planet. They are traits earned through being inquisitive and wanting to learn, whilst upholding values and integrity.

Yes, and we often recognize each other through the focused yet civilized language that we post.

Thanks ProfMac, turns out I just needed to press the scan button Roll Eyes

So did the reset work as instructed and did you have to reinstall cgminer?

Btw, I'd highly suggest using ethernet in the long run for more stability.

This is my experience with wireless.  My avalon is in the basement to take advantage of cooler temperatures, so it is not feasible to use ethernet.

Every time I try to transfer BTC out of Bitfloor to an external wallet with either Multibit, Bitcoin-QT, or direct to MtGox... I get an error from bitfloor: "internal server error"

I guessed that the BTC everyone had in bitfloor are lost forever Undecided, Can anyone comment on this, please?
The day Bitfloor closed, I transferred my bitcoin balance to my wallet and requested the cash balance ACH to my bank account.
I received the confirmation email for the ACH and received the BTC in my wallet within minutes.
Wish I had known the cash would be tied up for so long.  I would have just converted it to BTC and I wouldn't care about this thread.

I wish I had sold at 260 on April 9 and requested an ACH from bitfloor then.

Thanks for the help cypherdoc! I got it working, though I'm still having trouble getting the internet connected. It can't seem to connect wirelessly, I've got no signal. I put in my ESSID and BSSID and tried changing the transmit power and channel, but still nothing. I've got to split the reward with someone else, but send me a pm or reply with your address if you would like the reward. Thanks again!

The jumper on the TP-Link 703n between the antenna and transmitter has been removed, and the antenna pigtail attached.  You must have an external antenna to use wireless.  However, a straightened paper clip can be a temporary workaround.  But it is not protected from accidental shorting by touch, so get a real antenna, perhaps from an obsolete eBay router.

I lost contact with eligius about 9 AM CDT.  The miner has performed fail-over to stratum+tcp://stratum.bitcoin.cz:3333 but they do not have public statistics on the individual accounts.
It had also restarted cgminer at that time.  I later warm-rebooted the TP-Link.

Since it is mining with another pool, I don't suspect any problem with the Avalon.

I was on a trip when bitfloor closed.  When I was able to check in, I took some time to think about my options, then requested a BTC withdrawal.  It was processed normally.

Having trouble pointing an Avalon @ Alt coins... any suggestions as to why?

Also, can't seem to connect anywhere that uses Getwork. IE pit.deepbit.com:8332 is socket error, same with Coinotron unless I add stratum. however, simply changing the port and etc for Coinotron that would normally allow me to mine alt coins does not do so, rather it just forces BTC. These mine SHA-256, is there some trick I am missing to mine more than BTC?

I have installed Ubuntu and eloipool in a virtualbox.  This works well with the test network for bitcoin.  It fails with bytecoin, an almost identical coin.  There is some discussion on the bytecoin thread, search for 'Maria 2.0', about abandoning their p2pool efforts, and making eloipool work with Avalons.

The bytecoin version, bytecoin-qt does list my connection in getpeerinfo.

I was approaching it as a quick configuration problem, so that I could throw some hashes at the coin.  It has only mined about 300 blocks since May, apparently someone mined 2016 blocks quickly, then orphaned the network at high difficulty.

I am going to rebuild my virtualbox installation from scratch with very good notes and a checklist.  Pending on how much time that takes, I will package it as an "appliance."  I may or may not include the blockchain.  I have to go learn about diff files and merging them, I haven't done that in 25 years and my memory is empty.

Many of you have suggested that I post a BTC address where you can send me thank-you tips after you receive your Bitfloor refunds. For those of you who were thinking of doing this, I would really appreciate it if you showed your gratitude by tipping IAFCU. Please read on for details of how to do this.

(If you already tipped me on reddit or elsewhere — thanks! I'll be forwarding your tip on to IAFCU.)

When I spoke to Jordan Modell recently, I learned that IAFCU incurred a lot of expenses (legal, software, and personnel) beyond what they were expecting as they worked to set up Bitfloor users' new accounts and process refunds. They will continue to incur expenses as Bitfloor users start transferring their money to other financial institutions.

I asked Jordan if he could provide me a rough breakdown of the expenses they've incurred so far. He checked his records and emailed me the following:

  • New software to handle Office of Foreign Assets Control checks for those without accounts: $3,500
  • Call center: $1,000 and climbing
  • New hires: $1,500
  • Manpower: $4,000 - $5,000 (Their whole team worked double shifts on weekends, and no one took a day off in 16 days and counting.)

Because IAFCU is a small non-profit, these expenses are significant for them. I'd really love to see them at least break even for all the help they've given us (and hopefully even better than break even).

I am hoping we can raise $15,000 for IAFCU from within the Bitcoin community as a show of goodwill. I spoke to Jordan about whether they can receive donations, and he said that they can. The best way to do it is by making a contribution to the Internet Archive.

Here's what I'm proposing we do to make the fundraiser a bit public:

  • If you'd like to participate, visit http://archive.org/donate/index.php and select your donation method of choice (they welcome BTC, but other USD payment options are there, too)
  • (This is important) send an email to donations@archive.org. In it, include the amount you donated and request that your donation be used to cover IAFCU expenses. Brewster Kahle's assistant will be on the lookout for these messages to make sure the funds get where you want them to go.
  • If you'd like me to count your contribution in a public tally showing how much we've raised for IAFCU, BCC me on your email to donations@archive.org so I know how much you gave.

And thanks!

Set against a M$ 2.8 project, this comes to a prorated share of about $3.92 / $1,000.  Plus another 50%, $5.88 / $1,000 total, to ameliorate the responses of some.  With a debit card included to allow access to the money, it is a significantly better deal than a wire transfer fee.

817  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bringing ByteCoin Back to Life!( Update! Possible Fork) on: July 26, 2013, 04:25:49 PM

anywhere from 20 GH/s to 80 GH/s.
I just restarted with the /50 suffix.  How is that number defined?

I don't have a clear answer to that just yet.. I'm reviewing the discussion here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=18313.msg816322#msg816322

Edit - top post of that page explains it, and I've actually made a mistake here again.. Let's start you off at /1000+1

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=18313.msg816322#msg816322

I tried a lot of different values last night.  I went as high as /600000+4
What I am seeing is a very strong difference in behavior on the eligius stratum pool for bitcoin, and your p2pool for bytecoin.
I was pointing about 80 GH/s to your pool, and the statistics showed a trivial bump from 10 GH/s.
I got a payout of about 0.7 bytecoin.  In the same time I would have gotten about 0.5 BTC.

It is not ready for ASICs at this time.  When you run the calculations on how long it will take to mine to the 20160 block boundary at the current rate, the coin is not really useful for payments.  The choices I see are to go back to a block in may and fork the blockchain, and remove the blocks by the dude who raised the difficulty, or to make the miners ASIC friendly.

P2Pool does not have a good reputation among the Avalon owners.  Eliopool does.  I do have a virtual machine installation of eloipool that does work with bitcoin.  It gives some sort of error with the original bytecoin client and does not mine.  I was not able to track it down when I had an Avalon to point at it.  That is unfortunate.

I plan to package the virtual machine with eloipool so that anyone may download it and start it up.
818  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Official Avalon Technical Support Thread on: July 26, 2013, 03:12:36 PM
is it ok to flip the fans at the front so that it exhausts air out instead of blowing air in and then adding intake fans at the back of the casing?

since the psu at the back of the casing is facing down and sucks air from within the case.

are there enough molex cables left in the miner to power these fans?  (getting my avalon soon)

The avalon people have said no.  They incorporate the air pressure from inside the case to keep the airflow high through the power supply.
I would be concerned that temp1, temp2, and temp3 would also not have the expected pattern to present to the control software.

I bought a beer last night with my IAFCU debit card.

My refund credited to my IAFCU account sometime today.  It was over $3,000.
