201  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC Batch #2 Income Sharing; arrived and hashing on: June 27, 2014, 10:46:44 PM
So in the end, how did things balance out? Did the participants make back their initial investment?

I think it is fair to evaluate everything strictly in BTC.  From that viewpoint, all participants lost some of their investment.

A total of 79.71699897 BTC have been deposited to the embarcadero address.  The lowest cost that anyone paid for a share was equivalent to 86.83 BTC.

There are shelved shares on that address at Eligius that are worth almost 2 BTC.  These represent credit for shares that were mined, but were not paid due to orphan blocks and the like.  At the beginning of each new block mining period, the most recent 25 BTC worth of shelved shares are paid out, but as luck approaches 100%, this drops to 0 shelved shares, and when luck drops below 100% more shares become shelved.

I view the shelved shares as losses inherent to the mining process.  By way of comparison, I found 3 valid blocks for Eligius (75 BTC + miner's fees), and 1 orphan block (total loss).

I am trying to change my minimum payout, but when I try I get "signature fails!"

I am setting it above the minimum as well.

What is the deal?

My Eligius - 2014-06-24 21:17:11 UTC - Minimum_Payout_BTC=0.01049

Signature fails!

Are you using your Bitcoin wallet / private key to sign the message?

Why on earth would I give some website the private key to my wallet? Is that what they are asking for?

I assume there is another way to change a simple account setting other than giving them the keys to do whatever they want with my money.

It is bad enough that I can't even change my account name from the original address I signed up with... (or can I?)

Can you show the signature for that message?

Don't think so. AFAIK the transfer of the complete URL is already encrypted.
The other way someone could take a guess at which address was yours was if they knew what hashrate you were hashing at. If that were the case then they could merely visit http://eligius.st/~wizkid057/newstats/topcontributors.php and work out which one was yours.

That's easy to defeat.  Use more than one address! Smiley

Back pay rises as sqrt(n) / n, so for 2 addresses it rises twice as fast.

How's that?  My understanding is that back pay (which I'm assuming you're using to refer to either the shelving of shares, or the payment of previously shelved shares -- if you're referring to something else here, please clarify) simply goes on a share-by-share basis and has nothing to do with which account a share is under.  If I submit 1000 shares under Account A, and 500 of them are shelved, that's the same as submitting 500 shares (250 shelved) under Account B and 500 shares (250 shelved) under Account C.  The order in which the shares go into the system is the only thing that matters.  Assuming that hashpower is equally divided between Accounts B and C, and thus they are both submitting shares with approximately the same frequency, I don't see how one's overall payout would be affected by splitting up in this way.  (Aside from the payment queue, which of course is managed on an account-by-account basis.)

There was an analysis and also a simulation a few weeks back.  The conclusion seemed to be the sqrt(n) / n growth in time.  If you split the account in two, that would be 2 * ( sqrt(n/2) / (n/2) ).

205  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Group buy for the silkroad auction on: June 23, 2014, 07:32:05 PM
I have proposed a group buy for this same purpose on another thread in the Marketplace section, and currently it appears that I am the only one who has the $200,000 USD ready for the deposit which will be required sooner than later.

I think if we want to make this happen all of the group-buy organizers need to synergize.

Can you link to that thread?

Please see links in my signature if you are interested in bidding on the auction.

207  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Group buy for the silkroad auction on: June 23, 2014, 01:25:29 PM
I have corresponded with the US Marshals Service regarding the prospect of a group buy.  Their response was brief:

Quote
The registered bidder is responsible for making certifications regarding any individuals in a bidder syndicate/consortium.  You will need to submit your packet and deposit before noon tomorrow.  You will also need to show proof of available funds to cover your anticipated bid.

I take this to mean that they will approve of a group buy, and my basic approach is acceptable.
208  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Group buy for the silkroad auction on: June 22, 2014, 10:24:38 PM
On the other hand, I have not given up.

If you are interested, please fill out my survey listed in my signature.

I have asked to borrow $200,000 from a bank to be sent to the US Marshals Service with my bidder registration, and I have asked the US Marshals Service for clarification on whether I can submit a group bid so long as I submit information on section 1B and 1E of the bidder's form for each person with at 5% or more interest in the group.  I would need to have the USD on deposit in time to send in the winning bid on time.

This is not a deal for people who are confrontational with the FBI or US Marshals Service, or who are unwilling to submit their identity documents as a part of the deal.  On the other hand, if we are the only bidders to come forward, we can get BTC at only 10% of the market price.

If the bid fails, I will return all the funds, less any wire transfer or other bank charged amounts.  If the deal goes through, I will keep 3% of the bitcoins as my compensation.

I was a part of the USD refund after the bitfloor exchange failed.  If you were also part of that refund, you may wish to have USD in your related account, just in case.

If anyone has thoughts on how a multi-sig address can be used to make people feel more confident, please feel free to discuss.

209  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Group bid on US Marshals Service bitcoin auction on: June 22, 2014, 09:10:29 PM
I have asked the US Marshals Service for clarification on whether I can form a group of people and bid on the group's behalf.
I have asked a bank whether they will give me an account number to be used only for this purchase, and which I can publish.  The USD would only flow between this account and the US Marshals Service.

This is the 11th hour for me to be able to participate in this.  If you are potentially interested in bidding, please see the form linked off of my signature below without undue delay.

Also, look at the process that I plan to use.

210  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Any news on bidders for the auctioning of seized silk road bitcoins? on: June 22, 2014, 08:44:01 PM
Just putting the feelers out there to see if anyone knows anyone who has the intention to bid on the seized bitcoins?

Cheers,

I want to form a consortium to bid on these coins.  If you are interested, please respond to the survey form linked in my signature.

There is already another topic which talks about this. Why you open another?  Angry

So, news that U.S. government will sell 30k BTC with an auction, is not a good news.

What is a link to that topic?

surely Erundook reads the forum from time to time.
Are you serious?

Know why Cryptostock delisted CoinEX. Because they haven't been able to establish any contact with him either, and they are a professional financial business handling CoinEX's stock that makes CoinEX money. If Erundook was around, do you really think he would be ignoring them too?

Erundook is gone. The only question at this point is did the scumbag run off, or did someone 'dispose' of him.

He can read as a guest.

is Coinex.pw for sale? Including their current debts, i wonder how much it'd cost.

Put together an offer.  Remember that almost no one involved in programming or bitcoin wants to sell their project.  This may mean that you become a shareholder, not a full owner.

Publish the offer here, surely Erundook reads the forum from time to time.

Hey I've been above my minimum payout threshold for a couple of days now with less than 25BTC ahead of me in the queue, "putting this user's payout in our next block". Anyone else?

http://eligius.st/~wizkid057/newstats/userstats.php/12kp94AxdiwmdnMH6sNLBb3RESqLX7tBmY

If I understand it correctly, the payout queue is based on the age of the payout since that payout started.  So your minimum payout really doesn't mean anything if it's set too low, others who took longer to get to the queue will pop ahead of you, until your payout gets old enough to be ahead of everyone else.

For me the magic time period seems to be around 3 days.  I have my min value set to trigger around 2 days, but I end up getting paid on the 3rd day, roughly.

M

These things always get sorted out so I'm reluctant to say anything. I have my payout set to take me about 5 days to get to, it's been over 7 and I have been in the top block for a payout for a couple of days now.

Normally things happen after the next block solved once I reach the threshold. Like I said I'm sure it will get sorted out I just wanted to put it out there for whatever reason..

I once thought it would be interesting to take a snapshot of the payout queue, and to compare it to the transaction that was eventually made.  I envisioned a python / sql project that would just look at the payout queue every hour or so and drop stuff into a database.

I got distracted and never did that.  While I was watching the queue "by hand" it seemed that very old addresses would occasionally enter the queue out of the blue, and as you are experiencing, it was a little difficult to predict exactly when a payment would arrive.

Sometimes it seemed that I got more and more behind instead of catching up.  In those cases, there was usually a manual payout made.

How far back does this discussion start?
What is block withholding?

Just curious, how can you be confident this was a hack?  I mean what is the probability that they've just had bad luck and never got a winning answer but have genuinely been playing fairly?
I've seen the evidence and am convinced (multiple different ways, even) that the miner in question was in fact block withholding.
Whether it was intentional or accidental, I consider irrelevant.
wizkid057 plans to release more information at some point publicly, I'm not sure when.

Just to verify what was posted: I,too, managed to convert to emark (dem) and withdraw these to cryptsy.
DEM wallet on coinex seems to be working.
I might have lost some percent, and I'm still not sure if there are amounts in open orders I can't see.

But still, there's a chance to get some value back.

I mined DEM and advertised that they could be withdrawn about 3 weeks ago.  Later, the pool & wallet stopped working.  Can you give a time & date when you made a successful withdrawal?
219  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MZC][SHA-256] MAZACOIN *First Sovereign Currency* ANDROID WALLET AVAIL.!! on: June 01, 2014, 07:42:55 AM

I have a couple of ideas for the coin that I think will make it a very strong coin.  I did not share them on the Skype session.  I do not want to share them if they are not going to be acted on, because I will take them to a different coin in that case.

So, let me ask, how strong are you as a developer?  The distinctions could be, for example, you can use a text editor, change some constants, and build a new coin, or you have read the entire source and understand some of it, to you are an expert cryptanalyst, have a lot of network experience, and can change any aspect of the source and create a coin with distinctly different behaviors or novel user interface behavior.

I'd consider myself competent, I have lots of networking experience and my full time job revolves around networking.  I also do a some scripting with that job, mainly in PERL, I have fundamental knowledge of C++ and have taken college courses in C++, and Visual Basic.  I will never consider myself an expert at any of it as I feel I am always learning something new.  I have read through the source code and I am able to understand most of it and am still working on understanding the rest of it.  But what I lack in experience and knowledge I make up for in being able to find the solutions and learn what I need to get the job done.  I already have some code written for if we wanted to change from halving the block reward to quartering the reward at a faster pace than the current halving (We are still working behind the scenes to determine if and when we will implement), which I haven't seen in any other code that I've looked at.  It's fairly simple but definitely not a copy/paste job.  I have always been fairly strong in Mathematics which helps out a lot with that part of the code as well.  If you have ideas, you can definitely share them with me in PM and I will take them into consideration, if we decide not to use them I would let you know and keep the communication confidential if that is what you want.  If the idea is good enough and something we can implement I am more than willing to look at it.  I'm also not going to steal ideas without giving credit.

I continue to think that changing the block rewards or halving time, those fundamental constants of the coin, are a bad idea.  If you think that the values are not workable, I think you must start with a new genesis block.

My analysis of the situation is that the coin should be used for commerce, as currency, and not as a speculation tool.  The pump n dump crowd is pushing very strongly to make it as speculation, and that is not a long term interest.

My basic idea to improve the coin is to manage the coin volatility.  One way to do this is to introduce an element of the economy that can only be done with bitcoin.  Take a food store on Pine Ridge, as an example.  This store could have a web page for items that it sells at a discount.  The page could let people checkmark the items that they want to buy, and they could use their IIM accounts to purchase bitcoins as a coupon.  These bitcoins then can be used to purchase the goods when they go to the store.  If the price rises, the individual can sell the bitcoins and buy their groceries with the cash proceeds.  If the price of bitcoins falls, the individuals can still purchase their groceries, and the store has already been paid at the original price, so everyone gets what they paid for.

The store gets even more than they do with coupons.  They get marketing information, and pre-payment.

This requires that individual addresses be assigned.  One address is the source for coupons for, say, meat, another address is the source for coupons for milk.  A person paying from an address that was funded by the coupon gets the discount.

This is novel, and doing it with MZA would distinguish the coin from not only alt-coins, but also bitcoin.  It would make the MZA valuable as a currency.  Also, since they are purchase coupons, the store could sell them at 1 MZA/USD if they wanted to, and that would tend to stabilize the price at that same value.

I ceased mining operations today.

It is 80+ °F inside the house.
It is becoming summer.
The profitability is gone.
I will be out of town for a while.
There should be a final distribution from Eligius to me, then to all y'all.

When the last mining payouts are made, I think we have finished our business together.

We all wished the profits were higher.  I have tried to be transparent and diligent, I hope you have been satisfied with my part of all this.

Thank you for your involvement.
