Jesus, I have to say US government workers seem to earn quite a salary. That is nothing especially for the NYC/NJ area. 1) He looks fairly youngish which means he is at the bottom of the union pay scale. You can be sure that by the time he is 50 his salary will be well above $150K 2) That is the base only. For overtime he gets time and a half (or sometimes double). This can easily double a cop's pay. Have you ever seen them watching road construction at night or at a sporting event, they're getting bonus time for that. 3) The benefits are amazing. 4) They can retire at age 50 and receive not just their salary, but the average of their last 3 years salary+bonus, FOR LIFE. This often translates to $+200K/yr for life. 5) After "retiring" at 50 they can go back and work as "consultants" for the police and earn another 2nd salary, taking their total pay well above $250K If you look at the pool of people ages 50-65 pulling in well over $250K, a very good chunk of them are not doctors or lawyers, but cops and other senior civil "servants". What is even worse, is even though it is this bad, no politician will go after the cop's unions, because to do so would bring the full might of the police down on you. The perfect example of this is Scott Walker who went after every single public sector union in WI, but didn't go anywhere near the cops. No one, not even the president, can go after these criminals. Edit: For the first 100 years of US history, there were no standing police forces and the country seemed to do just fine. It was only in the late 1800s and early 1900s that the large east coast cities started to create standing police forces. It was a large debate at the time with many on the side of liberty arguing that standing police forces with the law behind them will inevitably become corrupt to the bone. So why would anyone trust a Qualcomm hardware bitcoin wallet built into their smartphone if it was proprietary? That was my first thought, this could go horribly wrong with the likes of the NSA and other tentacles trying to embed into network hardware. fortunately coin security has already being solved with multisig. Still privacy could be compromised but your coins can be safe. Exciting solution have already been proposed. http://sigsafe.org/ is one solution to allow you to use the tech while diversifying the trust. It just needs adoption. i see that Peter has been busy. interesting concept sigsafe. i'd be interested in hearing why he chose NFC. certainly worth following. |

You make the case about as well as it can be done at this point. Although, there was also extreme profit motive vs Mark K, on the other side of the razor. no, the USG was way up his ass in many ways. not to mention the $5.1 M they seized from Tibanne here in the US. i'm sure he was under a gag order. so was the Japanese police ever since the 17.5 to 0.0101 hack as he reported it to them. i'm sure during the subsequent investigations his systems got compromised. and if i'm right, that they had access to the systems, i wouldn't put it past the gvts to steal coins that could be responsible for the depressed prices we see today in the never ending inexplicable selloffs we've been getting. that's my tinfoil. |

Yes I do, especially when it comes to threats in monetary matters. They've demonstrated this understanding many times in the past ; Von Nothaus for one. Did you ever think that the NSA had the capabilities they have been shown to possess from the Snowden documents? And most experts agree that those documents released in 2013 are at least 2 years old. Cracking into mtgox would have been trivial for them. |

Some variation of Peter R's theory still lookin' good: Most or all of the missing bitcoins were stolen straight out of the MtGox hot wallet over time, beginning in late 2011. As a result, MtGox operated at fractional reserve for years (knowingly or not), and was practically depleted of bitcoins by 2013.

I'm very curious if the Gox investigations are going to reveal that their insolvency has something to do with the 2011 hack. I think one possibility that people are overlooking is that perhaps the attacker snagged a whole bunch of code off Gox's servers, and then analyzed it later and found exploitable bugs that allowed the attacker(s) to subsequently bleed Gox over time.

Scandalous. Not surprising, but still, this is the kind of thing people should go to jail for, or at least get fired... however, I expect no one involved in this scandal will even receive so much as a suspension. Modern justice at its best. < tinfoil hat time - this is probably intentionally leaked to provoke the elimination of the death penalty so that penitentiary for-profit institutions can collect more tax dollars and profits instead of killing their meal tickets.. /tinfoil> ...or... building on that: to apologize more direct killings from the police (criminals are never punished, so we need to put them down..)
