ooh! you mean like block being generated, like transactions and the next block. but not the same
right? do i understand the problem correctly, or have i missed something?

1865  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is this block odd? on: October 19, 2011, 09:06:10 AM
Yeah, I guess it happens. I was just struck by the combination of zero outside transactions, fast generation time, and increased difficulty all at once.
fast generation and only 1 transaction, is corelated. if there happede no transactions in that time, none gets included.
1866  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is this block odd? on: October 18, 2011, 08:30:38 PM
http://blockchain.info/block-index/786497/00000000000000737d9ec717b063002f1c617933957d08b0d485853ed49ea1c9
just as odd
1867  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is this block odd? on: October 18, 2011, 08:27:53 PM
I just notice the below block at http://blockchain.info/

http://blockchain.info/block-index/786604/000000000000003a857b3d977333cf16276af30d16ada38ac4f838d33ba4a206

Is it odd that someone found a block with 1 transaction in 1 minute with a target hash that is almost 16 times (4 bits) more difficult than the prior or subsequent blocks? Or is this just the luck of the draw? I understand random chance, just have never seen it so dramatically.

no don't think its odd. pure chance.

it's a very good point you make. Do you know if the bitcoin transfer is instantly (or basically instant)?

or rather let's say I'm transferring 50bc from mtgox into a wallet I've got on my laptop. how long would this normally take? I'm looking into software for both windows and mac cause this seems like a good alternative
for the transaction to arrive: instant.
for it to confirm: 1-2 hours, depending on fees, size(bytes), recent used funds, and block generation time.

The current software only allows division up to 8 decimal places. That's not a hard limit.

First, we can change from 64 bit to 128 bit at any time.  My guess is that we will do it for technical reasons LONG before economic reasons show up.
they are wrong, the 8 decimal point, is a hard limit. of cource we could get hackie, and make a new transaction structure.
and all (new) clients would have to support both formats for a long long time, for backwards.

but currently its a hard limit, because the coin base tx are of are 5000000000 satoshi/units(is the "0"'s right?).

Anyways, it seems to me that increasing precision, if possible, is a better approach than creating an expiration period, so I am definitely dropping that one. I did a little research and there was an incident regarding the CTxOut member structure, which created a value of 92233720368.54275808 bitcoins by sum overflow (see https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Incidents#Value_overflow). It is obvious to me that the block format would have to change to accommodate more than 8 decimal places, but the fact that the network remained operating with this absurd value indicates that it would not be that difficult for it to accommodate two different formats. Is that impression correct?
not the block format the tx format. and no two formats are just wrong, but it may be necessary in the FAR FAR future. and its only passibol after a long long time with the two formats running in parallel

Here's a donation.

Well, incoming.
OMG! someone donated! i did not expect that, after being very impolite, and rude.
but thank you Smiley it will go to projects that i think are interesting, and need support

Expect the unexpected Wink
Shocked another one. what have i done? i am surprised, it feels just like the good "old" time. where people donated to each other.
1872  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: So do I need to install special software to use bitcoins? on: October 18, 2011, 06:55:12 PM
you don't need to install anything. but its all a question about trust, do you trust mtgox? do you trust some ewallet provider? or will you have your money on your computer, or on a flash drive in a safe?

1875  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: n00b question: is BTC infrastructure *really* 100% decentralized? on: October 18, 2011, 05:59:46 PM
Or it could be put off by a great Bitcoin crackdown, a campaign of assassinations or s/t like that?
Where do the miners/pools connect to get their problems to solve?

Sorry for the noobness, but I am too lazy to study the white papers.
miners connect to pools. and pools broadcast, a solved block.

the only centralized parts are exchanges, mining pool, and forums. each can be replaced by some p2p-type of system.
exchanges: person-2-person.
mining pools: p2pool, or solo mining.
forums: well we can always make more of them.

you would have to assassinat all bitcoin users, to make it stop.
1876  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Restoring Lost Bitcoins on: October 18, 2011, 05:53:09 PM
And bitcoin are divisible as much as you wish. This 8 decimal thing is just a thing of the client, you can change it to how many decimal you want.
WRONG!

This would require the bitcoin client to allow you to enter a reference number and send it as a comment.
the address is the reference number.
