281  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / It's not the end, but..... on: March 18, 2017, 11:38:08 PM
we are in for some turbulence.

here are two posts captured on reddit. It looks like the waters may get tricky to navigate so keep a watchful eye peeps. I actually see the price of btc going lower, much lower, within the next few weeks, but I am going to remain bullish! If that happens, I will buy, buy buy!!!!

This is where it is useful to have a bit deeper in an understanding of how Bitcoin transactions work. I don't go into it in detail here, but there is no such thing as "bitcoins". The network is a global ledger of all transactions. When you "buy bitcoins" from an exchange, you give them money and then a transaction is created which routes some amount of BTC from someone else's wallet to your wallet. You don't "get" anything really, instead you control a wallet which the world now agrees has the ability to transact a certain amount of BTC. With an exchange, the exchange controls the wallet and gives you access (which is why it may be safer to send the coins to a wallet which only you control).
Now, with a fork, there may (although it is pretty unlikely) be two sperate chains. Any BTC "in" your paper wallet would automatically be valid on both chains, sice the transaction that puts them there exists before the split. Keep in mind that a chain is just an ordered list of transactions. Both chains will have the same transactions up until the "split" where different transactions may exist on different chains.

In the event of a hard fork, IF both chains survive (unlikely), then you will need to split your coins into different addresses that you control. Once they are split, you can send the Corecoins to an exchange and sell them. If you don't split your coins, then you are vulnerable to replays. You do this using two wallets, one that follows the core chain, and one that follows the BU chain. 1) import the private key from your paper wallet into both wallets. 2) generate a receiving address in each wallet. The receiving addresses will be different from each other. 3) Create a transaction in each wallet to transfer all funds to the newly generated receiving address. Submit the two transactions simultaneously. 4) verify that both transactions are confirmed in the next respective blocks. If they are, you are done! your coins are split, and safe to send to an exchange. In the event that after several blocks one transaction is confirmed and the other is not, it is possible that the confirmed one was replayed. In this case, dump the private key for the receiving address on the confirmed transaction, import it into the other wallet, and go back to step 2 and try again."

the only reason the twinkle-toes wanted SEC adoption was to fill their pockets. They are heavily invested.
283  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / I wonder what GHS is doing? on: March 18, 2017, 10:44:27 PM

I bet it's through the roof, right about now. Has anyone been watching?

Bitcoin lost about 25% of it's value in the last 3 days. wow!
284  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why the selloff? on: March 18, 2017, 08:32:56 PM
But what happnes if it forks? Will we lose our current bitcoins, or how will that work out?

you will not lose your Bitcoins!  you will just exist on two chains. if you have 10 BTC then after hardfork you will have 10 BU and 10 BTC. so you getting BU for free sort of saying. So do not panic ... keep in mind how much profit was made on ETC/ETH fork.  If it happens , there will be good chance to make at least 3 X your money

so if or when it splits, if BTC is, lets say at, $1000.00, will BTC go to $500, and BU at $500 or could something different happen?

With BU hardfork happening soon there's not the slightest chance bitcoin core will recover.

If it forks, will it turn into two separate crypto currencies?

OMG!! Down to $952.00 is this an adjustment?
288  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why the selloff? on: March 18, 2017, 03:32:17 PM

Wow!! It looks like I can get into this. I like the volatility! I was just watching, and it shot down to $1000.00 briefly, before shooting back up to $1040.00

Theoretically, could I have put in an order $1000.00, then sold at $1040.00 for a $40.00 profit per btc??

I have a coinbase account, can I do this type of trading there, or is there a better place? I want to start doing this, even if it's only a few bucks you make every day or so. It's fun.

It's fun until you lose.

Nobody can know what will happen, so if you believe in bitcoin it's best to buy and hold long term and get your coins out of coinbase. Download bitcoin core and run a full node to help the network and keep your bitcoins there so they are safe.

If you believe there will be a hard fork then the price will go down. I believe the risks are overblown.

I am not planning on keeping my coins on coinbase, however, my plan was to keep in cold storage maybe using electrum, then create a "watch only" wallet. What do you think?

May I ask why you want the scrolling transactions in the blockchain.info home page?
And yes there is a way to see that apart from that link.

No reason, other than finding it exciting, especially seeing $100k + operations going on, and some even higher. I think I have seen over $1 million dollar transfers. Imagine if you got one number off on the send address?? Yikes. Anyhow

How can I see the live transactions?
291  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Please help me. on: March 18, 2017, 07:51:01 AM

Bitcoins is gone Cry

My preciiiiiiiiiooooouuuuuuuuusssssss!!!

oh crap! I hope you weren't duped into downloading a zombie version of the electrum wallet. Please list where you got the electrum wallet from.
292  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: What's up with the high volume of unconfirmed transactions??? on: March 18, 2017, 07:42:23 AM
What unconfirmed transactions? there is basically 3,800 unconfirmed transaction right now and that's pretty good, I've seen it higher, much higher before. https://blockchain.info/unconfirmed-transactions

Yes, you are right! I checked the same page a few days ago, and it was double that.

One more question, what happened to the blockchain.info site? I noticed that it has completely changed? Is there another way to see the scrolling transactions you used to be able to see live?
293  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / What's up with the high volume of unconfirmed transactions??? on: March 18, 2017, 07:18:55 AM

Is it that the miners are being overwhelmed? And does this threaten the price of Bitcoin?
294  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: 2.9 BTC possibly lost on: March 17, 2017, 11:37:12 AM

Yes, he's stop using the drive to decide what the best option may be. As far as the erase method he used, he remembers setting it to 'wipe' the drive. He said he set it to the least number of passes.

I am not sure if there is much hope, If he cannot recover these coins. Do they just remain locked in the blockchain forever?

295  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: 2.9 BTC possibly lost on: March 17, 2017, 12:32:49 AM
The ultimate boot Cd has what like 100 different applications? Which one did he use? Assuming he didn't overwrite everything with zeros (if it took a few hours then he probably did this) you're probably screwed but like a previous answer said if it was a quick format the information is technically still there until it's written over. It's a bad analogy but it's kind of like recording over a tape. The original is still there until you write over it.

I just asked. He used one called DBAN, and he said he overwrote over the whole hard drive, it took like 3 hours he said.
296  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: 2.9 BTC possibly lost on: March 17, 2017, 12:24:40 AM
Depends on the operating system. For windows whenever you upgrade, or reinstall an operating system, there should be a folder called "windows.old". It is pretty much all data you had before reinstallation. Not sure if it works for all versions or if you need to check hidden folders.

There is also a program called "recuva". It can retrieve files from re-written, corrupt, or damaged discs.. I've personally never used it but have heard plenty about it.

Hope this helps or a better solution is recommended. I know that has to be a terrible feeling. Good luck to your friend and tell them to be more thorough from now on!

Thank-you for the reply. I will relay the information to him immediately, and if anyone else has anything to add, it would be greatly appreciated.  The management of his wallet was very poor. He understands that now, that he is facing the possible reality of being out about 3k.
297  Bitcoin / Electrum / 2.9 BTC possibly lost on: March 16, 2017, 11:49:32 PM

A close friend has formatted his hard drive with the Ultimate Boot CD prior to installing his new operating system. In the process, among other things, he forgot to back up his wallet, and his seed was in a text file that he never copied to paper, as he should have. I gave him hell about this. The wallet was the electrum wallet, same one I use. The only thing he had written down, are his send to and receive addresses? I told him that, without the wallet seed, or him having backed up the wallet keys, there is nothing he can do, and that the BTC may be locked forever. Am I correct to say that? Can someone think of something he can do? Should he bring his computer to a forensics expert at this point? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank-You in advance.

BTC plunging down to $1134 and going lower by the minute.
299  Economy / Service Discussion / What happened? on: March 16, 2017, 09:00:04 PM

to the blockchain.info site??

It used to have the scrolling transaction screens, plus all the bitcoin news. Now it's completely useless. What have they done? Is someone else hosting the old site?

thanks.
