61  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Friend gives wallet seed to stranger and bitcoins disappear from his wallet on: October 23, 2017, 12:00:01 PM

Going forward, my friend tells me he will buy more bitcoin, but be more careful next time. Right now, he will be on the sidelines because he has no more money to invest.

He is thinking that this was a great kick in the balls from the stranger. What if btc goes to 10k, 25k, 50k? I told him he needs to hope for the best, however, expect the worst, and move on.
62  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Friend gives wallet seed to stranger and bitcoins disappear from his wallet on: October 23, 2017, 01:29:06 AM

A Police report has been filed, and a description of the person, a stranger has been given to them. The bar is cooperating. There were surveillance cameras so they may be able to identify the guy, or not. regardless, it may be difficult to get the coins back.

notice how when I hover over the link, if you look at the bottom right, the link is different.

65  Other / Meta / Re: suspicious private message received on: October 22, 2017, 08:03:16 PM
It's a phishing link. The site mimics bitcointalk and gives you a fake warning:
Session expired, Please login again.

You did good by reporting it. I hope people won't fall for this. There's going to be more of this shit since accounts are worth a lot of money these days.

The user octavarium is a hero member with over 500 posts, and he is the one that sent it.

What the hell is this??? The user which I will not YET name here did not respond. I clicked on the link and it prompted me to enter my username
and password, which I did not do.

The story sounds quite difficult to believe for me, and I learned a long time ago that you shouldn’t believe everything you read in a forum. However, that there are some possibilities that that could have happened, whether to your friend or someone else.

What I don’t get is: did your friend go to the bar with the seeds written on a piece of paper? Always keep your money away from strangers. The fewer people know that you have money, the better, even acquittances.

Would your friend also give a stranger his fiat wallet with $10000 in it and then wonder if he will get it back?

Yes, I was thinking something like that. Not the fiat wallet but the password and the coordinates card or other security feature.

@Don Pedro

apparently, you did not read the whole post. I clearly stated that my friend asked for help with his wallet (at a bar where bitcoiners frequent), and the stranger gave him instructions on how to get the seed out of the wallet, but you would have had to read to figure that out.

My friend is obviously an idiot, but I am waiting for the pain to subside a bit before I tell him.
69  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Friend gives wallet seed to stranger and bitcoins disappear from his wallet on: October 22, 2017, 06:34:01 PM
I'd say the chances of him getting anything back is about 0%. It is definitely an expensive learning mistake though...

Should he file a Police report on this? He has not done so yet. Is there a chance the stranger could get nabbed when he goes to cash in at an exchange?

It depends on which country. However, it is most likely that the Police will not able to do anything about it. I think I would personally give it a try though.

Considering how much money it is, I would also try and find out who this "stranger" is. It should be possible if they met in person as you described. Perhaps someone at the local bar knows the guy.

The value was over $15,000 my friend is out. He is majorly bummed right now. He is getting ready to call authorities as well as try to i.d. the stranger.

He just told me the bitcoins disappeared from his wallet within minutes of him giving out his wallet seed. He is in the states.
70  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Friend gives wallet seed to stranger and bitcoins disappear from his wallet on: October 22, 2017, 06:23:45 PM
How did that person get in touch with your chap? a person who has 2.6 BTC in his wallet should have been more careful the stranger probably ran away with the BTC by now the chances of getting his Bitcoin is close to zero.

My friend apparently got in touch with the stranger at a bar that is known to have a lot of bitcoiners around.

Not likely, unless he can track down the stranger and prove that the stranger stole his bitcoin. Why the hell would anyone give their seed to a complete stranger unless they don't know what the heck they're doing anyway?

He did not know what the seed was for. The stranger gave him instructions on how to get it from the wallet.
73  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Friend gives wallet seed to stranger and bitcoins disappear from his wallet on: October 22, 2017, 06:09:29 PM

A friend who asked for instructions on how to use certain features of his wallet, was apparently tricked into divulging his seed to a stranger, and now his 2.6 btc are missing from the wallet, and so is the stranger. Does he have any recourse?
74  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Very worried 1,6 btc still not confirmed. it's been 8 hours not 1 confirmation. on: October 21, 2017, 12:05:26 PM
Finally confirmed! Thankfully

However, lessons have been learned HERE, and I thank those who have contributed.  I buy and sell bitcoin. It's my job, literally, and often, I buy from and sell to people I don't know. I have basic knowledge of the blockchain, and I have never had any scares until now.

I am going choose sellers more carefully and will set rules for them. If they want to get paid immediately after they send, they will adhere to my rules, otherwise, they will be paid after 1 confirmation.
75  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Very worried 1,6 btc still not confirmed. it's been 8 hours not 1 confirmation. on: October 21, 2017, 01:58:10 AM
This was bought from a person that may be difficult to track now.

1> How can i prevent this from happening in the future to me?
2> Going forward How can i prevent this from occurring?
3>Is this likely a setup from what you guys see or is it likely to get confirmed??

1&2. The only thing you can do is try and be more careful who you deal with... ensure they use "proper" fees to send transactions or you can offer to subsidise the fees so they can send with a good fee to increase the chances of it getting confirmed quickly.

3. Honestly, I don't think so, they just cheaped out on the fees. Also, the network seems to be quite busy, likely because BTC is hovering around USD$6000... so there are a lot of unconfirmed transactions and fees are creeping up again.

Going forward:

1> How do I check the blockchain to make sure they used a good fee?

2> How do I check to make sure that this transaction confirming is not contingent on another transaction confirming first?

76  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Very worried 1,6 btc still not confirmed. it's been 8 hours not 1 confirmation. on: October 21, 2017, 01:15:42 AM
There are transactions before it that aren't confirmed, there is probably a transaction holding all these up.

The one I found was this: https://blockchain.info/tx/83ca55d9d64e5ae54431e3d7dbbbef5da49f53e78a89756ed137633c839c77f9
There's probably more further back, I'll continue...

Edit it's just 2 transactions:

Hi

Does anyone see anything obviously wrong with this transaction: Address sent to: 1EUSB5W2uPT9F3yDbqoLaC5GaX8VZiG93S

Please help if you can.

78  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I told my grandma to put all her lifesavings in Bitcoin because you guys said on: October 14, 2017, 01:33:20 PM
it will only go up. She bought at $4200 Sad
How soon can we REALISTICALLY see $4200 again and upwards?

I bet Grandma is dancing the two-step with these prices. Maybe she should sell enough to recover her initial investment, and keep the rest.
79  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Jaimie Dimon Comedy Act. Talks Bitcoin again, day after he said he would not. on: October 13, 2017, 10:28:51 PM

Jamie Dimon has resorted comedy to bash Bitcoin now since his fraud statement and recent attacks backfired. Please watch him in action on link below.

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/10/13/jamie-dimon-says-people-who-buy-bitcoin-are-stupid.html

I intentionally did not look at the link, i prefer to stay far away from purveyors of fake news.
So instead i give you the opportunity, of an alternative link.

Quote
Yesterday during JPMorgan's earnings call, CEO Jamie Dimon relayed the following...

"I wouldn’t put this high in the category of important things in the world, but I’m not going to talk about bitcoin anymore."
It seems 'anymore' to Dimon means 'less than 24 hours' as during a panel at an IIF event today, the outspoken bank boss - apparently still feeling threatened by the disruptive technology - lashed out again at the cryptocurrency...

*DIMON: PEOPLE WHO PURCHASE BITCOIN ARE STUPID
*DIMON: "WHO CARES ABOUT BITCOIN?"
*DIMON: I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE VALUE OF SOMETHING WITHOUT VALUE
*DIMON: I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT BITCOIN
*DIMON: BITCOIN IS `A GREAT PRODUCT' IF YOU ARE A CRIMINAL'
And then he ended with another promise...

*DIMON: THIS IS THE LAST TIME I TALK ABOUT BITCOIN

We wonder how long that will last.

And don't forget to mention that his daughter owns 2 bitcoins.
