Excuse the intrusion, but why on earth would you recommend coinbase? Users should be in sole possession of their keys. Reddit is full of reports about coinbase holding BTC hostage due to overblown kyc/aml shit.
It seems coinbase is the new PayPal. Don't recommend it!
"I think I should test my wallet by typing my seed into a friends computer to see if it works" At this point, I would think that no amount of explanation could save this person's ability to secure his bitcoins. At least with Coinbase, they protect your bitcoins in a similar fashion to a bank, so most people are used to that. Point taken. Still opposed to recommending coinbase or similar, though. Why not recommend to get a trezor? Makes security easy.

I want to, just two problems: 1. $119 is kinda steep for someone just getting into Bitcoins. I'd rather recommend something like Coinbase or Circle than sound like I'm pushing a product. 2. I have yet to see a Trezor in action, nor do I have the funds to purchase one myself. If I were to recommend something, I would like at least a rudimentary understanding of how to perform each action with the device, but there seems to be a lack of videos on Youtube that show every single feature... so until I can fiddle with one, or someone puts a detailed walkthrough on Youtube etc. I feel like I'm not qualified to recommend it. (It would be like recommending a friend of a friend... and that kind of irks me.) Again, I completely agree with the Coinbase sentiment, but I use them to purchase coins and so does my mother too. (She, on the other hand, has decided to keep them on Coinbase because she's afraid of tech things... yet she wanted bitcoins.) I just send them to my offline Electrum as soon as they post. I will definitely pick up a Trezor eventually... but for now... just saving up.

My life had been in turmoil for about a year and is just now calming down. It was during the turmoil that I originally set up my second wallet hence me incorrectly copying my password. It took me 2 weeks to even find my seed and incorrect password My friend already had access to my seed and password for my first wallet in a secure location. I would trust them with my life. I wanted to use my friends computer so as not to lose any part of the existing electrum info that was on my comp by reinstalling electrum. Was the concern about my friend or their computer? From dabura667's original responses I could imagine his exasperation to my questions

Which OS are you on? If you are on Linux/OS X you can start using -v and you should get output on what you are waiting on. Do you have more then a handful of transactions?

cleared the cache? What cache? Sounds like you're using a browser-based wallet, which electrum isn't.

I think you'll need to be more specific than "does not work". Also: why don't you just fix it yourself? Are you a paying customer?

Please change all references above in the original post from electrum-desktop.com to https://electrum.org/. We don't need a Japanese-language blog about used cars here. Thank you.

quick question.. i made a vanity bitcoin address and imported it into electrum, works great. if i encrypt the wallet in electrum.. say sometime in the future i forget that password.. or whatever stops working..
is the private key for that address good enough to import into another wallet? or is it a use once thing?

As long as the wallet allows the import of private keys you are fine. Addresses can be imported into multiple wallets at the same time or however you want. No need to worry.

Hey guys, I hope someone can help me... I installed Electrum 2.5.4 first time on this computer and havent set up any password and I have no seed. It says it is encrypted and to set up password it asks me for the old one, but there is no old one. I didnt create any. I havent this problem with older version on my old laptop. Creation of seed and password was part of instalation process. Not here. What to do? Can I send BTC to that wallet, or it will ask for non exsiting password when I will want to send it from wallet?

I would not use that wallet. Is that wallet currently empty? If it is do the following. Close electrum. GO to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Electrum\wallets WHere <username> is your username Delete the wallet file Start electrum again and create a new wallet.

^ just to add some info: electrum in newer versions (also the one mentioned) allows to open multiple wallets, even at the same time (cool). I'm not sure which one is automatically opened at startup, probably the last one closed.

Doesn't sound like you can. To verify, you can try to sign a message: with the wallet open, go to addresses tab, copy one of your addresses to clipboard. then go menu "tools" -> "sign/verify" message, write some made-up message, paste the address and click "sign". Maybe even more sensible: display the seed by going to menu "wallet" -> "seed". Sounds from your description of problem that both things will probably prompt for a password, which means the wallet is encrypted.
