I will make a statement regarding this matter on behalf of Bitcoin Magazine and it's publisher Bittalk Media Ltd.

However, please do allow me some time to consult all the affected stakeholders. It might take a few days.

I'm actually a bit surprised that you've not had these consultations proactively.  This train-wreck was fairly anticipatable it seem to me.

Relatedly, one of the old timers who has some credibility asked Mathew earlier something like "you still don't see the danger do you?"  to which Mathew responded negative.  I guess he does now.

Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

The only problem is, courts could decline to judge a gentlemen's bet. However those who tried to hedge against pirate's default, and which Matt knew by his own admission, might claim damages by willfully leading them on. Who knows, maybe Matt tried to corner the debt market himself, which would lead this into outright fraud territority and liability.

IANAL

Yea, I suppose you are right. If a court would rule on such a bet, I still believe they would rule against MW...and I don't think it would be a difficult ruling for them to make. I learned the hard way in a contract dispute matter where I was the plaintiff and lost due to my ignorance in reading and fully understanding agreements and contracts, written or not.

You did not pay the bet, you are a scammer

According to which law? I paid already. Please see earlier posts. Thanks!

Right as we all were betting just numbers and not actual bitcoins.

Nice try.

I already paid 20 BTC for each entry as described in the bet thread. I'm not quite sure what you're talking about.

WHAT?

Quote from Matthew Wright at 18 Minutes in:
http://www.donkdown.com/media/DDRadio-2012_08_22_19_00_07.mp3

"The most important part of this is to get people to realize that they represent Bitcoin with everything they do"

Matthew,  you should be ashamed.

The first 23 minutes of that are quite hilarious to listen to right now.

Strongly recommended.

I've yet to purchase a Bitcoin Magazine because of MNW's involvement. If you can show that he is no longer involved in any way, shape, or form, you will have at least one new customer. I'm sure others would be willing to make a similar statement.

Perhaps someone could start a new thread documenting exactly how many people would purchase a magazine if MNW was no longer involved?

the magazine is as good as  finished ,watch how many people order edition 4 after this

I consider this scamming ~80k BTC and will not be doing any business with MNW nor buy "his" magazine (unless he is no longer is associated with it).

Thanks to everyone who participated in this bet. It was a great social experiment for me to find out who my true friends were, and also to entertain the community (which is my true purpose on these forums and always will be). Unfortunately, it looks like I lost the bet. This means I'll need to pay out exactly as described in my original thread OP.

Many of the people betting were very careful to point out that others were ignorant and foolish to invest their money into Pirate without doing due diligence beforehand, so far as to call them shills, suckers, etc. This leads me to believe that the individuals betting in my bet are very wise with their money and would only bet if they carefully read and understood the rules of the bet. For this reason, I am confident that the very wise individuals betting in this thread will be satisfied with the very literal interpretation of my thread.

I will begin paying for my losses as outlined in the following rule:

If I lose the bet, you get 20BTC sent to that address (13dSK4663Ts7j2PwHS1eUVjycKLBwx7PJM). If you lose, you'll need to send 20BTC to my address.

I'll begin processing the payouts for each of the 112 betters in this spreadsheet immediately: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ajtx05YrHtIydFVHcGxLOExTbnhqajJLZmlSZUNtM3c&pli=1#gid=0

Please make sure to following along for your own record keeping purposes. I will update this thread with each payment as well. Thanks again!

Haha, Matthew is so smart and we're all so gullible! I certainly learned a lesson though... Matthew is a self important attention whore and he's not to be trusted.

I'm curious though, what was the literal translation of Matthew's post describing what he would do with his winnings?

But yeah still, I'm not continuing my Bitcoin Magazine subscription after this thing. I can't support behaviour like this.

I'll have to reconsider this as well. It's not only my subscription that will be affected though. The site I run is currently becoming a major reseller of Bitcoin Magazine in our country for both subscriptions and single issues. We have to reconsider the whole thing and if we quit it will hurt Bitcoin Magazine much more than a single subscription.

What difference would my bet make to your magazine? I must be missing something.

It makes the difference that you just lost 4 magazines that I would have bought. Was just expecting the outcome to decide if I would buy them or not. Guess what: I won't be buying those nor any future issue.
And, btw, my bet was just for shits and giggles and I never expected you to pay. I just thought you would use something more inteligent that what you used to not paying. It just seems desperation on your part, and I'm now convinced that you would take everyones money in case you won.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how you effectively ruin your already battered reputation and good will.

I feel sorry for anyone who does business with you, not just because you have an absolutely rotten character, but because the mere association with you will taint them.

I don't know if anyone has asked MNW this yet... not that we could believe his answer... but if he would've won the bet would
he have refused to take any money and come clean on this all being a joke?

It is astounding to me that someone could be so clueless as to fuck people around this way ( a lot of whom had already lost money to pirate and who were understandably upset, despite the fact that perhaps they should've known better ) and expect anyone to take this in any kind of good humor ( except maybe pirate who perhaps is glad that a little attention and heat is deflected from him ).

I won't ever buy that magazine or have anything to do with anything that this person is in any way involved in...

Matthew shouldn't be banned. We all know he'd just make new accounts. The scammer tag looks good on him. No reason to not let him show it off to the 14 people that don't have him on ignore.
I dunno, Matthew's been spending a lot of time trying to hunt down Atlas alts and get them banned. There'd be a certain irony in him being on the other end of that for much the same reason as Atlas.

+1

Matthew, you're absolute scum. I did not participate in your bet, neither did I invest with Pirate.

Lesson for all: Don't do bets unless they're escrowed.

PS: The kind of trick you pulled here is the kind of trick some jerks pulled at me when I was 10 years old. I guess that's your mental age.

Also, I will not purchase Bitcoin Magazine because of this.

You're not clever, you're just a fool. If you keep acting like this throughout life, you'll either end up in jail or killed.

Good luck!
