If you’re wondering what #Peercoin devs are focusing on this year, the following two articles from our Project Lead will glean some insight. Read them in order. It may not seem like it at first, but they are connected:

Future of Smart Contracts

Pooled Minting with Threshold Signatures

We are pleased to announce the release of Peercoin v0.14. This is a mandatory upgrade. We call for all stakeholders to adopt the new protocol changes. Please upgrade your wallet by June 3rd, 2024.

A hard fork will occur once both of the following conditions are met:

- 75% of the last 1,000 blocks are from a v0.14 wallet.
- June 3rd, 2024, 12:00 UTC has passed (earliest date network can fork).

You can follow the progress of the hard fork here:

I've always seen PPC as a PoS currency, I haven't followed it for some time now and forgive my ignorance on this issue, based on what I've read I would like to know since when did it become PoW too (if it did)?

PPC is not just a PoS currency, it's where PoS was invented in the first place. But it's always had PoW as well.

In a pure PoS currency, initial coin distribution is a problem, and generally it needs a centralized authority that decides how the initial coins are given out. For example, the authority can be a company that sells the coins, which goes against everything in the original ideas of cryptocurrencies. So PPC used PoW to ensure that anyone can mine the initial coins in the same way as in Bitcoin, but the PoW block reward was designed to get smaller so that PoS would dominate in the long run.

Does anyone know if Peercoin is divisible to six or eight decimal places? According to the official documentation, Peercoin should be divisible down to 8 decimal places. But everywhere else I only see six decimal places. Even entering getbalance in the qt wallet console only shows 6 places. The block explorer at chainz.cryptoid.info/ppc also only shows 6 places.

About 5% remains before the Peercoin network hard forks to v0.14. If you are still minting on a v0.13 wallet, please take the time to upgrade. The latest version can be found here: https://github.com/peercoin/peercoin/releases

Peercoin has successfully forked to v0.14, adopting the ASERT PoW algorithm from Bitcoin Cash.

This responsive difficulty algorithm ensures Peercoin can swiftly adapt to dramatic hash power fluctuations, stabilizing the production of PoW blocks and reducing inflation.

Another first in crypto! Peercoin developers produce the first ever Taproot threshold signature transaction using ROAST.

One test uses 150 of 200 signers to produce a single on-chain signature for spending funds. Learn about these massive multisig setups here and what it means for Peercoin’s future.

(Pre-ANN) Patchcoin: A sister cryptocurrency to Peercoin

Today, we are sharing an upcoming project with the Peercoin community: Patchcoin.

The development group is a collective of Bitcoin investors who have worked quietly with Peercoin contributor noface to build something new and useful. This process has taken several months.

Our project will combine Peercoin’s proof-of-stake strength with a fixed supply cap matching Bitcoin’s.

We view Patchcoin and Peercoin as sister cryptocurrencies – with a shared background, values, and purpose, but each having its own unique characteristics.

The entire supply – all 100% – of this project will be fairly and freely distributed to Peercoin holders. Coins will be distributed through an automated on-chain claims process.

To claim your coins in this new project, ensure that your Peercoins are stored in a personal wallet (not on an exchange) by block 795,000, approximately 17 February 2025.

More details will follow on 22 February if that block height has been reached.

Watch patchcoin.org for more information soon.

IMPORTANT: this is the only account associated with the Patchcoin project on this forum. All communication will be done publicly through this account.

Peercoin is a hybrid coin, retaining mining with SHA256d in addition to Proof-of-Stake. Will Patchchoin also be a hybrid PoW / PoS coin or only a PoS coin ?  If a hybrid, will there me only a single PoW algo, or multiple PoW algos ?
