I have a proposal for a new celebration called "Halving Day".
The celebration would coincide with the Bitcoin block halving that occurs once every 4 years. Given the random nature of blocks being found, the day cannot be set until probably a few months before the actual day.
The purpose of the celebration is to simply get together with fellow bitcoiners and celebrate this wonderful invention called Bitcoin. I would like to see large organised events similar in nature to what we see for New Years celebrations around the world.
Similar to New Years, there could be a live broadcast on a big screen (see bitcoinclock.com) or loud speaker that announces the first halved block in realtime for a bit of arbitrary back slapping and high five'ing.
Other activities could be combined into the celebrations, maybe charity fund raises or company announcements or awards ceremonies..
If nothing else, even just printing some posters saying "happy halving day", or wishing strangers in the street a "happy halving day".
Eventually I would like to see this event become as popular as other 4 year events like the Olympics and World Cup.
So lets get ready to celebrate the inaugural Halving Day in 6 weeks time on the 30-Nov-2012.
Happy halving day!

We've been thinking about this for a while, the proper event for the occasion is of course a block party.
In fact the exact date cannot be set until 4 days before the event. (Or more precisely, 4 days before the event you have a 24-hour window for when the event is 99.7% likely to occur, and a 16-hour window for 95.5%.)
When block 209999 is found the countdown starts: "600, 600, 600, 600, ... Happy block year!"

Of course there will always be the one that believe it wasn't the real Satoshi and his return has yet to come. Bitcoin is great and Satoshi is his prophet. No, Satoshi is the messiah whose return is eagerly awaited. Sometimes I fancy that Satoshi must have been a visitor from the future, a Prometheus bringing us mere mortals the secret of fire, thus enabling the further progress of civilization.

The point when the last 50 BTC block is mined is the point at which the game changes, IMO. From that moment onwards all miners are working for a lower potential reward, regardless of exactly when the first 25 BTC is found. roy

Correct. I believe early on the 29th is if we get 10 minute blocks, but we've actually been getting like 9.6 or something for a while and that would put it earlier.

You can always get the latest ETA at bitcoinclock.com. It says 11/29, but it assumes 10 minute blocks. It's starting to look like 11/28 in the evening. If ASICs come online before then it will probably be much sooner than that.

Yeah try UTC or write GMT+/-N As for when ... 3 weeks ... This diff is currently only running 1.9% fast. (with very close to 4.5days to go at 1.9%) Then 2 weeks with anywhere from -2% to 10% adjustment on that (well that's what I guess - and in that range my guess is 4%) or between 342.7 hrs and 302.4 hrs or 4% = 322.6 hrs Then another 337 blocks after that ... I'll go the same range -2% to 10% (and guess 4%) so between 57.3 and 56.6 hrs or 4% = 53.9 hrs So on those figures - with it now 8-Nov 05:15 UTC (oh another block just came in I'll ignore it ) I get my guess of: between 29 Nov 9:15 UTC (-2%) and 27 Nov 16:15 UTC (10%)Or my 4% guess = 28 Nov 9:45 UTC (4%)

I take it is on a set block number ? So if it's block n that's the deal, then we sit with the champagne glasses at n-1 and just wait for n, and once n comes we can all say cheers and start jumping, is that right ?

Yes. Block 210,000 is the first block of the halved reward. The time it will be produced looks like 11/28, or possibly 11/27. Since the time to produce a block is random (but is usually close to 10 minutes), a more exact time cannot be predicted at this point.

..with totally random waiting times in between! Will you be able to have a beer in between each block? How will you divide the "10 minutes", drink it all as fast as possible, or be slow and hope you have those 10 mins? I see some fun block-games coming! :-) Ente

I'll go the same range -2% to 10% (and guess 4%) so between 57.3 and 56.6 hrs or 4% = 53.9 hrs So on those figures - with it now 8-Nov 05:15 UTC (oh another block just came in I'll ignore it ) I get my guess of: between 29 Nov 9:15 UTC (-2%) and 27 Nov 16:15 UTC (10%)Or my 4% guess = 28 Nov 9:45 UTC (4%)With about 10 days to go Amusing that the last diff did actually finish on 1.9% So based on it now being 18-Nov 21:00 UTC (though it's tomorrow here ) Current Difficulty of the 870 blocks so far in this last difficulty change before halving is -1.4% ... still JUST inside my rather large -2% to 10% range (Yeah looks like it won't be anywhere near 10% but I'll leave that as the top value anyway) However, I'll drop my 4% guess now down to 2% for the remainder of this difficulty + the 337 blocks until halving. So again with the range -2% to 10% and 1146 blocks until the last diff change: Between 194.8 and 171.9 hours (or 2% = 187.2 hrs) Then another 337 blocks after that ... -2% to 10% (and now guess 2%): so between 57.3 and 50.6 hrs (or 2% = 55.0 hrs) So again based on it being 18-Nov 21:00 UTC and block 208517 So between 29-Nov 09:06 UTC (-2%) and 28-Nov 03:30 UTC (10%) Or my new 2% guess 28-Nov 23:12 UTCEdit: hmm - that 337 range is wrong, 10% is 50.6 (I typed 56.6) - never noticed the mistake before either - corrected now. That meant the 10% is 28-Nov 03:30 UTC (not 28-Nov 09:30 UTC)

So anyone know why bitcoinwatch and bitcoincharts are saying next difficulty change at 209,664 blocks ... I thought the halving and next difficulty change co-incided, i.e. 210,000? http://www.bitcoinwatch.com/http://bitcoincharts.com/markets/EDIT: evidently they don't coincide ... my mistake, just had always assumed they would ... the next difficulty change will be the 104th and the block reward halving will occur 336 blocks after that change and 1680 blocks before the 105th difficulty change ... as you were, no need to panic.

I've just started keeping track so I don't have many data points yet but I have a simple approximation based on current block and time between blocks as reported on blockchain.info.
So far my estimate falls in a six hour window on the 28th between 14:30 and 20:30 UTC.

umm, simple approx. says about 6 days, 16.6 hours from nowish ... so 2100 28.11.12 UTC ... roughly speaking?

That's a reflection of how much noise is in the data, that it changed that much between when I posted and when you posted.

That meant the 10% is 28-Nov 03:30 UTC (not 28-Nov 09:30 UTC) Time to do one last guess? With 127 blocks to go until the last diff change - difficulkty is showing 1.16% - not majorly different to my 2% guess - but still a bit lower. Now lets say it is 25-Nov 17:45 now At 1.2% that will put the last difficulty change (before halving) at 20.9 hours from now or roughly 20hrs 55 minutes. Or 26-Nov 14:40 for the next diff change Then add another 337 blocks at between -2% and 10% (or using the current diff value of 1.2%) That gives between 50.6 and 57.3 hours after that - or between 28-Nov 17:16 and 28-Nov 23:58But using the 1.2% number we get: 28-Nov 22:10Hmm all my numbers are on the 28th now (UTC)

I'm betting it will actually drop, quite markedly too. Reasoning being a "buy the rumour, sell the news" effect. With so much speculative money in bitcoin a good portion has come in to profit from the "halving" phenomena. This money will take profits after the halving (I think they are already doing this for the last few days) .... I'm expecting to drop more and probably it will be a while before the long term effect of the decreased inflation works its way through to the supply/demand equation.

Heh difficulty for the last change was 2.08% - matched my guess (2%) surprisingly enough, so I should have used it for the last calculation rather than the reported (incomplete) value at the time of 1.2% Anyway with it simply counting down blocks and no more changes - currently it's 116 27-Nov 23:20 UTC now 116 at 10 minutes is of course 19hrs 20min -2% is 19hrs 43min +10% is 17hrs 24min So that's now a 2.33 hour range and at a 2% guess thats: 18hrs 57min to go or 28-Nov 18:17 UTC

Looks like my 6 week rough estimate of 30th November (AEST) was pretty close, its now looking like 29th @ 6:30am (AEST).
So had any big party been organised for the 30th with say a 2 day buffer either side would have been sufficient.
Tough to organise a kick-ass party for 6:30am though.. lol

Block rate has been going wild for a while It's at 5% at the moment. I saw 17 in 95 minutes 2.5 hours ago But I was thinking that the higher that get the better! 42 left to go now - but the change of hte hash rate dropping after 1/2 is quite high and it's only 13% into the difficulty change So that remaining 87% could possibly take a while ... Anyway it's now 28-Nov 10:00UTC +42 at 2% (yeah I'll stick with 2% anyway even though it looks like it'll be wrong ) Is 6hrs 52min or 28-Nov 16:52 UTC - already more than hour earlier than my last guess. and if it stays around 5% it'll be 6hrs 39min - so 28-Nov 16:39 UTC 10% will be 6hrs 18min or 28-Nov 16:18 UTC So anyway - with it this close it's almost certainly 28-Nov 16:NN UTC for some value NN

Just for interest there is a full deep penumbral lunar eclipse at exactly 33 minutes past this current hour (in half an hour +/-) & the full moon is exact at 46 minutes past, exciting timing!

Oooh. That is pretty awesome timing but I'm sure it only holds true in one place. Can someone find out where that happens at the moment the blocks halve? I hope it's not off the coast of Africa in the Null Triangle (0.0.0.0)....

The code is very simple, highly unlikely to be buggy. // Subsidy is cut in half every 210000 blocks, which will occur approximately every 4 years nSubsidy >>= (nHeight / 210000); Ah ha.. >>= should be >=.. there is a bug.. quick where's Gavin! Nah, its right, means shift by x (in our case by one), which equals divide by 2^x. (I assume, I never read the code.) Subsidy is shifted right by number of times the height is over 210000. We're mining on the first new 25 BTC block now. I got my transaction sent! WooHoooo.

Can someone explain me why did block 209998 get only 10 transactions when it had time for 23 minutes? And block 209999 543 transactions in just one minute? Was that done on purpose by the miners, so that as many transactions as possible are on the famous "last" block?

Give it some time. I would be really surprised if the hasrate won't change. I don't think anyone suggested half of the network was sitting next to a switch waiting for 210000. It will take some time for the affect of the halving to make its way through the network. I'm sure a lot of gamer/miner chaps out there aren't aware of the halving and probably won't notice the drop in revenue for a while.

I'd be really surprised if the hashrate didn't change either, but keep things in perspective. Even if the hashrate were to cut right in half, it was running at over 300 Teraflops at the flip. Even half that is way more than is reachable by the top 10 fastest supercomputers on Earth combined. It was never really intended that mining would be particularly profitable. It was expected, very early, that the major miners would slowly gravitate to the colder climates and areas that electric service was particularly cheap. The city that I expect that most mining will occur is in basements across Reykjavik, Iceland; once this whole Bitcoin project achieves international mainstream acceptance.

This system was to be controlled in a feudalist fashion by the central banks of the world acting in concert, by secret agreements arrived at in frequent meetings and conferences. The apex of the systems was to be the Bank for International Settlements in Basel, Switzerland, a private bank owned and controlled by the world's central banks which were themselves private corporations. There is massive amounts of reserve capacity for this network as well, most of which would be a net loss for the operators; but with the right motives can be brought to bear under such need.

Heh amazing how the block rate has increased. You'd think ASIC was up and running - but not a sign of it from any one of the big 4 working on it (BFL, bASIC, Avalon, ASICMINER) Yeah 210000 was 38.5 BTC The next 2 were 25.5 BTC so not too shabby either. So looking at my guesses - not a single one correct for the final time but all the diff changes before it were fine The actual final time simply kept get earlier and earlier as the block rate kept increasing. The block rate really has jumped up and it has been since the last difficulty change in the 337 blocks up to halving. So some amazing block counts as at right now - block 210040 last 144 blocks (usually 1 day) average: 7m 37.65s +31.10% last 288 blocks (usually 2 days) average: 8m 39.24s +15.55% last 432 blocks (usually 3 days) average: 8m 55.30s +12.09% And of course the last 2 difficulty changes were 2.08% and 1.9% so either amazing luck changes since those small diff changes or more likely the network hash rate has really gone up quite noticeably in the last few days. I guess we'll see again in the next few days. Edit: and note I specifically say 'block rate' not hash rate. Although everyone likes to call it the network hash rate, it actually is simply a calculation based purely on the block rate. Although that is not a too inaccurate estimation of the network hashrate - it is only an estimation - since it is random statistics we are dealing with and even a '2 week' 2016 sample is not overly accurate ... (1 day samples and graphs showing them as 'hash rate' are almost random numbers IMO)

Happy Halving Day!And my best wishes to all the BTCTC community and to the bitcoin project, and to all the contributors to the bitcoin ecosystem! ("Halving Day" happened 6 hours earlier than what I had predicted even just two days ago - maybe some ASIC manufacturers have already started making test runs in real-world-conditions [or have changed their business models?!? ] and returned some share of the extra earnings in the form of extra-high transaction fees...) For the friends of number mysticism: - It happened on day 333 of the year 2012 (although I don't believe in things like --> this...).
- The average duration between two generated blocks turned out to be 9.774 minutes, which is quite precisely the same number as the lowest gravity that exist anywhere on earth (near the equator at higher altitudes) when expressed in m/s². One may interpret nice and positive things into this for the future... ;-)
For the friends of down-to-earth mathematics: Here is the original forecast of bitcoin creation, given an ideal generation rate of 1 block per 10 minutes: Time = 0 min = 3 Jan 2009: 0.00000000 Bitcoins exist. New block reward=50 BTC =5000000000 satoshis. Time = 2100000 min = 1 Jan 2013: 10500000.00000000 Bitcoins exist. New block reward=25 BTC =2500000000 satoshis. Time = 4200000 min = 28 Dez 2016: 15750000.00000000 Bitcoins exist. New block reward=12.5 BTC =1250000000 satoshis. Time = 6300000 min = 26 Dez 2020: 18375000.00000000 Bitcoins exist. New block reward=6.25 BTC =625000000 satoshis. Time = 8400000 min = 23 Dez 2024: 19687500.00000000 Bitcoins exist. New block reward=3.125 BTC =312500000 satoshis. Time = 10500000 min = 20 Dez 2028: 20343750.00000000 Bitcoins exist. New block reward=1.5625 BTC =156250000 satoshis. Time = 12600000 min = 18 Dez 2032: 20671875.00000000 Bitcoins exist. (1 day samples and graphs showing them as 'hash rate' are almost random numbers IMO) If the reward has halved does that leave more room for transactions ?

If the reward has halved does that leave more room for transactions ? No - it's just a number in the coinbase transaction Though if the block rate dropped that would be the opposite - more txns available per block (so less space)

I like this one, pretty nice call Someone on reddit posted: One small integer division for a CPU, one huge leap for mankind. It's good but not strictly accurate. No integer division is done per se, but the equivalent. That is the subsidy amount starts at 50 and is right shifted one bit for each multiple of 210000 of the block height. So I guess the block height is divided but not the subsidy. A right shift of one bit is the same as dividing by two, a special case. Maybe, One right shift for a CPU, one huge leap for mankind.

Happy halving day everyone. In 30 or 40 years you can tell all those next generation Bitcoin developers that you have been using Bitcoin so long that when you started blocks had a 50 BTC reward.
It is kinda weird seeing blocks with a 25 BTC subsidy though ...
Yeah I want to have mined a block with a 50 btc reward..

"The powers of financial capitalism had another far-reaching aim, nothing less than to create a world system of financial control in private hands able to dominate the political system of each country and the economy of the world as a whole. Each central bank...sought to dominate its government by its ability to control Treasury loans, to manipulate foreign exchanges, to influence the level of economic activity in the country, and to influence cooperative politicians by subsequent economic rewards in the business world."

I don't understand what that chart is trying to tell me. What is the "network deficit"?
It shows how much miners would earn if the block reward was 0 BTC (not 25 as currently). It's supposed that in the future miner's income will be mainly tx fees. The fees will cover expenses for mining (electricity). Now most of the miners would switch their hardware off if there was no 25 BTC given each block. Bitcoin will survive only if its price or fees will be high enough to cover expenses. If this doesn't happen then only a few computers will mine and a successful 51% attack will be easily achieved. NB: I may be wrong in my interpretation of "network deficit".

Thats why I.. who believes in BTC for the long term will never ever shutdown my rigs even when i for some time make some loss knowing i already made money out of the system and becourse if you are a true Bitcoin believer you are willing to invest some time keeping the protocol alive ..untill ASIC will arrive true miners should keep mining...but thats just how i think about it im a true supporter of the project not only for the money ...money is what is killing this world...and I have enough to live well.. But I also will laugh IF one time 1 BTC reaches $100 or 1000 pp ....

If you are expecting such increase just forget, on that time bitcoin community were just some, maybe 500 members, soo the new ones were able or the olders to make pressure. Bitcoin wont grow such this time as bitcoin are present at several hands instead just some as on that halving.

This is a very old post but halving 2016 is coming so I will greet everyone happy halving day. I hope that it will also be shown on TV a grand celebration of halvening. It's not clear if there's a celebration since there are no announcement. But I'm happy since bitcoin has reached another halving. Bitcoiners wish bitcoins to survive and will celebrate more halving.

But maybe the situation of this halving is very different with the previous halving because until this time we can't show the marking of halving or impact from halving to the bitcoin, the price just stable and a lot of people feels it. maybe this halving has become the worst halving in bitcoin history.

4 years later after this thread was created the halving is going to happen again, and now there are 93 blocks left until 420,000th block. It is expected to happen today (UTC time) and let's see what will happen with the bitcoin price, I'm excited to see the surprises.
But maybe the situation of this halving is very different with the previous halving because until this time we can't show the marking of halving or impact from halving to the bitcoin, the price just stable and a lot of people feels it. maybe this halving has become the worst halving in bitcoin history. Well that sure clears it up lol

Just wait a few days to a few weeks and see what happens. That way, we can tell what
really happened, whether it increased in market value or not.

Everyone, pull out all your bitcoins! The price will drastically go down! No, I'm joking. No one knows what will happen. I feel bitcoin prices will not fall in the near future. maybe the price will be slightly reduced but will inevitably increase again. of the alarming price drops, the better we prepare to collect bitcoin in large numbers in various sites that we can use to generate a bitcoin, because perhaps halving the next one will make bitcoin prices even higher.

As for the price, I'm sort of expecting it to go the same as last time: nothing major in the short-term, but an increasing degree of upward pressure over the course of a few months due to the reduced supply of BTC.
Happy halving day to everyone! I wish the btc price could reach 1000$ or more soon. Lets celebtrate bitcoin birthday as well.I forgot the exact date....

No worries as they already know that since the day they began to mine. If price will increase after this halving thing, miners activity will be worth it and so on they will continue what they're doing.

I was in celebration mode at the time the price peaked at around $790 not long ago. It was a long time ago since I made this much profit. Right now my mood is in normal functioning mode.

If price will increase after this halving thing, miners activity will be worth it and so on they will continue what they're doing. Well I agree with you man. I hope that the miners will have a happy halving day even if their block reward will be halved. I also hope that the new base price of bitcoin is 600$ for them to profit in the new block reward amount so that they won't despise the halving day. Actually based on my own view, miners can still keep up with the current price rate eventhough the rewards will be dropped. The output is no different from when the price sits for $200+ range for about half a year then sits for another months at below $500 to the situation today which is rewards will be drop and the price sitting at around $650.

Are there traditional customs and foodstuffs for this holiday? Also, do you think my boss will understand if I call in work late, scream "Happy Halving Day!", and hang up?
What should I wear?
For one, it's customary to send a lucky transaction, trying to get into block 210000, 420000 etc. With a higher transaction fee, both to even be able to get into the block, as well as a friendly nod to the mining community. I missed out on the first block halfing, and of course it's difficult if you are out there celebrating the block, as you should! Happy blockhalfing day, gentlegals and guys! Ente

I think the miners will also be happy with halving as the price of bitcoin is already doubled and it will increase more in value so the miners will receive the same amount of money which they were getting before halving. and also they also will have big piles of bitcoins so they will also get bigger profit from bitcoin price rise.

In the first halving in 2012, how long did it take for the price to rise to around $1200?
12 months almost exactly. Then the drop that devastated many bitcoin users and lost their trust to bitcoin. Well, can't blame them anyway. I would've probably had reduced trust if I bought bitcoin at a high price then it suddenly dropped so low.

Happy halving day to the entire bitcoin community I do not think we should worry too much about miners. They are made good profit so far and I think they will continue making a profit, maybe a little less than before. But mining is for large farms with cheap electricity still a good and profitable business. Happy halving day, everyone! The last four years have been very productive. Bitcoin was so much smaller in 2012 -- it's sometimes hard to believe how much the community, technology, and economy have expanded. I hope that the next four years are even better! As for the price, I'm sort of expecting it to go the same as last time: nothing major in the short-term, but an increasing degree of upward pressure over the course of a few months due to the reduced supply of BTC. 'Twas the night before halving, when all through the chain Not a miner was stirring, not even Bitmain's The Trezors were hung by the paper wallets with care, In hopes that Satoshi soon would be there; The full nodes were checking that all blocks were right; While visions of freedom make our future bright I celebrated with a couple of beers, but reading this made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. Time to bring out some milk and cookies. And pizza! Happy halving everyone!

Well im satisfied with it even if it doesn't rise at 1000$ because it gave a nice price rise. It's good to actually see some one being happy with the current price. I am quite sure that a lot people right now are very disappointed in the price as it didn't go up as much as they were hoping for. These people are just dreamers.

Heh. I didn't even notice. The first halving was quite a stir for a bit, but this one was more like the Y2K bug.
|
"The powers of financial capitalism had another far-reaching aim, nothing less than to create a world system of financial control in private hands able to dominate the political system of each country and the economy of the world as a whole. Each central bank...sought to dominate its government by its ability to control Treasury loans, to manipulate foreign exchanges, to influence the level of economic activity in the country, and to influence cooperative politicians by subsequent economic rewards in the business world."

What kind of an effect did you expect?

"The powers of financial capitalism had another far-reaching aim, nothing less than to create a world system of financial control in private hands able to dominate the political system of each country and the economy of the world as a whole. What kind of an effect did you expect? A rise in price, perhaps? That's the most expectation of the most of the people here.

What kind of an effect did you expect? A rise in price, perhaps? That's the most expectation of the most of the people here. Any rise in price would have been predicted by the market, and occurred before the halving.

Many of us are happy to finally see bitcoin's price over 600 dollar. No more 300 dollar or even 250 dollar. Finally an acceptable price

I think better to wait more months.. the effect of block halving is not instantly it needs patience the price of bitcoin is always depends in demand and supply not in block halving.. but it can help to that the price will increase fast.. becaues our supply is already been reduce by half 12.5 btc per block

People expected Bitcoin price "to the moon", someone here ohw forum were speaking even about 2000$ for BTC afterw halving. That didn't happen and now they are disappointed..But let's face it, that wasn't realistic. Still, the factw that nothing revolutionary hasn't happen doesn't mean that the Bitcoin will not continue to gradualy rise.
