With this victory Nadal is one grand slam away from Federer record, do you’ll think he’ll be able to surpass Federer’s record?.

Source: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2019/sep/08/rafael-nadal-daniil-medvedev-us-open-tennis-mens-final
Nadal 33 years old if he can play 2 or 3 years more, I think that possible He can surpass Federer's record, but with note that Federer can't win even one grand slam single title anymore. The most frightening for athletes is injury because injury can change everythings we can see many tennis athteles take a long rest due to injury e.g. Juan Martin Del Potro, Andy Murray. If Nadal gett injury or choose to retire faster then that is difficult to achieve.

That's true, Nadal has suffered a lot of injuries but has endured and continued to play until now, what is great for world tennis.
Federer clearly has no more physical strength for long and exhausting matches so I believe Nadal will reach him already in Roland Garros.
Both can be surpassed by Djokovic if he stays healthy and fully focused on tennis.
After this match, it seems to me that when all three of them retire to tennis, Medvedev will become their natural heir.

Nadal taking the first set 7-5 and it looks like he is also going to win the second set. Medvedev gave everything he got on the first set and now Nadal looks very strong so I don't think that we are going to see Medvedev winning here, sorry for all Medvedev fans here.

Yeah I'm watching the match right now and it looks like Medvedev is no match for Nadal as Nadal won the first two sets and the third set just started. Medvedev can turn the match around but it will be tough playing one of the best players of all time and normally when Nadal is in this form he is very hard to beat.

@vella85 Nadal won the tournament and I had predicted that he would be winning it in the other thread, honestly I was surprised to see that so many people here thought that Medvedev could beat Nadal. Though I have to admit Medvedev did play much better than I had anticipated, but then he was up against a spirited Nadal who wasn’t going to accept defeat. With this victory Nadal is one grand slam away from Federer record, do you’ll think he’ll be able to surpass Federer’s record?.

Wow what a match and medvedev did make a game of it while nadal took the first two sets and the game did look to be all his. Even in the last fifth set he just couldnt shake him off and it got to 5-4 before taking him out in exciting fashion.
Which thread did you predict nadal was going to win the tournament?
I think he has enough gas left in the tank to challenge federer's record because it is just one more grand slam to go. Easy for nadal if he keeps fit cause he doesnt have ankle problems like murray. Grin

Yes, Medvedev was two sets down, but he fought back and even save match point. However, Nadal can't be deny, the guy doesn't want to lose. If Medvedev could have made the first two games 1-1, he could have a chance against Nadal. But no ashame though, he gave everything but Nadal was too strong mentally here. I believed that he can still won another Grand Slam in the next year or two and surpass Roger Federer's record.

To be fair with Medvedev, I thought that it is going to be over in the next set and Nadal could win the 3rd set as well. But Medvedev shows what other young tennis player didn't show when they face champions like Nadal, he didn't melt under the pressure and gave us fans a good showing and come back from 0-2 deficit to tie and go for the juggler in 5th set.

It was just short, Nadal is a veteran and experienced player and this is the difference here. Kudos to Nadal, but watch out for Medvedev coming up in the ranks.

Medvedev is surely one of the young talent to watch for in the future as he took it right up to Nadal unlike what we have seen in the past when the young talent face one of the top 3 in Grand Slam finals as they normally lose in straight sets without much of a challenge. Nadal will most likely catch Federer and may over take him next year if he is able to stay fit but then I think it will be Djokovic to over take both of them in years to come if he is able to stay at peak fitness. I think we only have another few more years with these top 3 playing and then its up to the young talent coming through which is looking good right now. Congrats to Nadal on winning his 19th Grand Slam title.

It's one of the good Finals I watched in Tennis, my bet is Medvedev and I never loss my trust in him although he was down 2 sets at the start, I like the courage of Medvedev because he was able to come back and even tied the game, but the experience of Nadal gives him that edge in the last set.

Congratulations to him, he was so humble during his interview and I like how he appreciates the effort of Medvedev and I believe it will inspire Medvedev  to be better since this guy is still 23 years and more better future to come for him. His length and his height is going to be an advantage if he will mature over time.

Exactly, Medvedev has gained a lot of tennis fans with that performance against Nadal. He was down 2 sets in the beginning and have that mental toughness to get back in the match winning 2 successive games. If he faces someone in the finals not name Federer, Djokovic or Nadal I'm sure he is the champion today.

Definitely this is just the beginning for Medvedev and facing a champion like Nadal in the finals has given him a ton of experience that can help him win the next time around specially if he goes to the final again. Maturity will come for sure and as long as he continue to improved next tournament he could be the next grand slam winner.

Yes Medvedev does look like the one out of all the up and comers to win a Grand Slam title very soon, maybe next year we will see this. We have seen in the past the up and comers make Grand Slam finals, Dominic Thiem has made the past two French Open finals but hasn't been good enough to win or even challenge to win the title like we saw with Medvedev, he gave Nadal a challenge and almost pulled it off so that is why I rank Medvedev ahead of all the up and comers coming through right now.

France open and now US open, Nadal is showing great consistency. Which open is coming next? I am going for Nadal this time despite some great performance from youngsters like Medvedev and Thiem D.

Exactly, Medvedev has gained a lot of tennis fans with that performance against Nadal.
I spotted him in the group round from this topic. I watched few of his matches and realized that he has the potential to rule the tennis world in future if he keep this pace.

I think reaching the finals in the US open, push Medvedev to the 4th position already and should be switching places with Thiem, ranked 5th now.

@Royse777 - him winning Cincinnati open put his name in our radar. Also he won the Sophia Open early February this year so definitely he has the potential to be the next future number one here.

From Start of US Open Medvedev was in sport of many peoples as he was giving good and consistently in few tournaments he need some more experience and can go through in all way as still we have Nadal and Djokovic they will take some time but this youngster's consistency will surely give him good reward in near future now we are heading for Tokyo and Shanghai where Nadal already want some more titles but Medvedev will be big resistance for him.

Congratulations to him, he was so humble during his interview and I like how he appreciates the effort of Medvedev and I believe it will inspire Medvedev  to be better since this guy is still 23 years and more better future to come for him. Yes I think they switch places and depending on how well Medvedev does in the tournaments coming up as we could see him finish in the top 3 at the end of the year. Medvedev is just under 2,000 points behind Federer so I'm not sure if he can achieve a top 3 finish but with the form he is in I wouldn't count him out on winning a few tournaments coming up. I think if Federer wins one of them or makes the final then he would shut Medvedev out of a top 3 finish. I think its going to be a great battle to see who finishes in the top 5 with Thiem holding it down right now but Zverev is closing in on him and lets not count out Tsitsipas who is just 1,100 points from the 5th ranking.

Here is the current top ten (as of now)

I remember last time when I checked the ranking (beginning of this US open), Thiem was in 4th position. I do not know how the point works here but it seems top two are close to each others. Medvedev or anyone else still needs to go a long way.

I do not know how the point works here but it seems top two are close to each others. Medvedev or anyone else still needs to go a long way.

I'll explain how it works on example of ATP Masters 1000 tournament. The player who wins the tournament gets 1000 points, runner up gets maybe 500 points while semifinalist get around 200 and so on. Player keeps that points until the same tournament next year.

Meaning it is very easy for a player who had bad last season to rapidly gain points and for a player with good last season to rapidly lose points.

There is a actually two tables for ATP players where one of them keeps scores as I just explained (more important one) and the other one just adds up the points for that season, so no defending of the points.

What follows is written as example I don't have time to check actual finishes and points for the players at the moment.
The change between Thiem and Medvedev happened because Thiem probably had a lot of points to defend from last year, let's say 500 hundred and Medvedev had none or very little. He earned maybe around 1000 points for runner up space and effectively made up a difference of 1500 points vs Thiem in two weeks.

Hope it is a bit clearer now.

[..snip ..]

Trofo is right.

Grand Slam winners = 2,000 points
Runner-up  = 1,000 points
Semi finals = 720 points
QF = 360 points

Masters 1000

Masters 1000 winners = 1,000 points
Runner-up  = 5,000 points
Semi finals = 360 points
QF = 180 points

Master 500, 250 same point system just cut it in half.

So Medvedev can still catch up Roger Federer at the end of the year if he landed at last into the semis, runner up or winner to gain more points, so a 1,000 point lead is not enough.

Well if he is able to continue on with the form he is in then it is looking likely that he will end the year ranked in the top 3 thanks to the other members here posting how the points are score for winning and making finals in the up coming tournaments. It will be interesting to see if Federer will play in most of the remaining tournaments to try and keep his top 3 rank.

^^ He could very well be ended up in the top 3 at the end of the year but winning another 1000 Masters to overtake Federer. The kid has so much potential specially how we fare against Nadal in the US Opens.

We all know that Federer selects tournament that suited him most, so I doubt that that he can sustained the number 3 spot if Medvedev enters a lot of tournament before the end of the year. He has all the advantages right now to be in the top 3. Yes, there's a possibility that he can get injured, but he is still young and can cope with the stress of everyday tennis.

I hope so, he really need to keep that form by entering lots of tournament prior to the end of the year. At least he can have so much experience and there's nothing to be ashamed if he ever does not land on the top 3.

I'm just wondering if Federer will take the rest of the season off and get ready for the start of the new season as I think it could be his last year next year. I think the big battle will be between Nadal and Djokovic for the number 1 ranking as Nadal is within striking distance. Nadal also has all the momentum right now so he could finish the year ranked number 1 once again.
