It may sound super trivial to all seasoned penguins out there, but for me it is a big shock !!!

I don't know since when, but I was doing the updates but never rebooted... and today I just discovered that I was running on a super old kernel while looking at purging my /boot.

I hope that I was the only linux noob here.

    "staking status" : "Staking Not Active",
    "errors" : "This is a pre-release test build - use at your own risk - do not  use for staking or merchant applications!"

What am I missing?  Is this true?  How can you stake your coins if the software says it does not implement it.

nah they have been staking other coins for a while, been using them with quite good results, just your more open to hacks and trusting your coins/money to someone else. They have been reliable for me up to now staking aerm, buzz, opc, xgox, but i only keep small amounts normally $100 or less, just in case they do get hacked, or run off with every ones money, but every time you use an online wallet/exchange your taking that risk. If you have small amounts and want regular stakes without running your computer 24/7 then definitely use them, but if you have a large balance and staking just fine by yourself then there isnt much point in taking the risk - https://stakeunited.com/mushroomkilla

If you send your coins to an address of which you do not own the private keys, your coins are not really yours anymore and you're trusting the other party (exchange, wallet, service, etc.) with them.

Both are good projects. Privacy-wise, I'd say they're comparable. XMR uses ring signatures whereas PIVX uses Zerocoin protocol. One big difference is that PIVX is PoS whereas XMR is PoW. Philosophically, PIVX tries for more utility as an actual currency (fast block times, fast tx speed and confirmation, and low fees), whereas XMR is more focussed on security 'at all costs'. Some other strengths of PIVX include its use of a 'see-saw' mechanism to dynamically adjust rewards between masternoders and stakers, fair community governance, and the fact that fees on the network are burned (i.e., as transactions on the network increase, the total supply will remain relatively flat and could even decrease if zPiv transactions, which are more expensive, become very common). The PIVX community is also very strong (mostly on Discord, but to a lesser extent on Reddit as well).

Also if I'm not wrong, Monero only has private transaction, whereas PIVX has both (PIV or zPIV).

I'm personaly more interested in PIVX than XMR mostly because of PoS, because this mining thingy is getting out of hand.

One thing that bothers me and I don't understand is why is the wallet set to mint 10% od PIV to zPIV. Shouldn't that be the choice of the user exactly how much of PIV one wants to convert to zPIV?

You can control zPiv staking. Just add enablezeromint=0 to your .conf file, and then create as many, or as few, zPiv as you wish through the GUI.

That said, I agree the option could be made easier, and many people feel the same as you. Long story short, Zerocoin protocol relies on mixing your zPiv with a bigger pool of other people's zPiv, so that when you pull your normal Piv back out of the pool it's not possible to identify whose are whose. If the 'mixing pool' contains only a few zPiv, it's much easier to tell which ones came from where; conversely, if the pool is large, it is effectively impossible to tell, resulting in a truly anonymous system. Thus, the privacy of the overall network relies on the collective pool of zPiv being large, which is why the devs requested that everyone keep at least 10% of their total as zPiv. Anyway, as with anything like this (e.g., organ donation?), you have to decide whether to make it opt-in, in which case you don't piss anyone off but all the lazy people will just not bother opting in even if they're actually fine with it, or opt-out, in which case you piss off some people but most of the lazy and indifferent ones again don't bother opting out, so you end up with wider compliance. Obviously, the devs chose the latter option. The point is there is a very logical reason for the 10% zeromint thing, but yes, it annoys some people, and yes, you can turn it off, and yes again, arguably the option to turn it off should be made accessible through the GUI.

I have read about that and I did disable zeromint for now. I was really supprised when I deposited my PIV in the wallet and then some of them got missing. I have heard about PIVX some time ago, but didn't check the latest news and recently decided to install my own wallet and move PIV there for staking. So after that I did the research and figured it out. Just thought I should mention it. Maybe when the pool gets large enough this option could be disabled by default?
As for the GUI option...I run my wallet on a home server and use CLI
