We must admit that for etherium mining rx480 is just tonga (380-380x) moved to 0.14 fab and with faster 2000mhz memory.
With slightly lowered power consumption.
Tonga 850/1650 with samsung or modded bios elpida mem can do 24mh/s with moderate power draw, so 28-29mh/s with 2000 mem is not a surprise.

How many people running 90c temps have good computer cases on?

Some cards run hotter, even with massive airflow through the case.

R9 290, R9 280x, and especially the R9 290x were notorious for running hot - and lasting a long time anyway.

My triple-box with 3 R9 290s (Stilt bios, dropped temps a LOT then I overclocked and brought them back up some) has 2 Delta 120mm 250CFM fans in front, the 4 stock 200 (220? 180? something crazy-big) fans on the side, and a low-flow 140 in the back I couldn't find a good place for. My 290s run anywhere from 75-85C even with THAT airflow at 90% fan setting and space between them - but they're also pushing 1060-1100 Mhz core clocks and that's in a room with ZERO a/c and decent airflow, but still pushing 95F inside-the-room ambient temps the last couple days (heat wave seeing highs around 90).

My older HD 7xxx series cards I can generally keep under 70C, the various NVidias I set target and custom fan profiles on to keep them under 75C - the 7750s are an extreme, they all (except the Sapphire with it's GOOD original fan) have Delta 60mm screamers twist-tied to them and never see 60C.

A R9 280x at 92 when mining is nothing unusual - it's just the card is a hot running card - and it probably thermal limits around 95ish.

Great news if this turns out to be right, 72 isn't too hot and almost 30mh/s is great for $200, I can't wait to see the vega cards as well, we might be seeing 50mh/s for 250w per card.

If that is true, the 480 RX will be sold out as soon as it is on sale. I will order a few of the 480 RX. that is very good.

I can see the newegg prices right now.

As of right now the newegg prices are $239 to $269 for the 8gb 480 version on newegg.
There is only one 480x -  4gb card for $199 on newegg.  I see a few 4gb cards for $239.

Newegg usually sets the lowest price for GPU's when they are released.  I expect the $200 cards to be limited supply and sold out quickly.

I probably should have said "thermal throttles" not "thermal limits".
My R9 290 Sapphire Reference cards start throttling at 94, not sure what their shutdown temp is as I don't think they ever reached that.

Same here I have a reference card that stays at 94 constantly while mining and throttles down to stay at 94 but I noticed that the system reports the fan at like 40-50% only.  Is there some special trick to make the fans go to 80?

You can use MSI Afterburner. That's what I use. My fans are blowing at around 50%, for a maximal temperature of 58°C (I have 380, not the cards you mention).

I tried MSI Afterburner and they seemed to have no effect on the fan speed of the reference card.  I'm guessing the guy that had it before me put some custom firmware on it or something perhaps.

Ok, guys I chased down the post on the Ethereum forum regarding this 72c temp on the rx480.  It seems the user Koody posted a followup to that information when asked about the settings, ambient temps, etc.  It is winter time where Koody is at and the temps in the room with the miner are PRETTY COLD!

This brings us back to the topic of these cards running hot.  I have seen a few posts now indicating these reference cards are running around 90c.  I think those that are running off to buy these cards without taking this into consideration may regret it.  I would love to jump into one of these pre-orders for these cards, but it would have to be for the aftermarket cards with the better cooling solutions and they are quieter.

I hope I am wrong and just being overly cautious.  I hate being the "Neddering Naybob of Negativity (N3)" here, but I would hate to see folks jumping into these new cards and finding themselves in a pickle.

Just under volt and call it a day I'm guessing..the reference r9 290's run hot, but with a decent under volt (-100) and box fan cooling the rig my cards all run in the mid 70's.
