For those getting excited about the power usage reported by GPU-z --- Don't!

That value is only for the GPU chip its self, it doesn't account for the rest of the board. When my GPU-z shows 83w draw from the 480, my actual measurements taken from the riser and the 6 pin are 141w, a difference of 60 watts!

Here's confirmation from the creator of GPU-z himself: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/4qk17o/my_xfx_480_power_draw/d4tp4hc

http://www.game-debate.com/news/20657/radeon-rx-470-and-rx-460-arrive-promising-1080p-60fps-gaming-for-as-little-as-99

Seems like the 470 is likely more efficient the 480.

So which cards are at the moment most profitable for ethereum mining( ratio power consumption/mh) ?

I may be wrong. It was said in this thread or some links that memory bandwidth matters more than all the other stuff like shaders, etc. The 470 is mostly nerfed in the other stuff but just about the same as the 480 in memory size and memory clock/bandwidth at 40 less watts.

For now the GTX 1070 is more efficient on power to watts, but cost as much as 2x 480's to buy. So the question is will the extra hashes per watt be enough to pay for the card? Of course, the 1070 is a much greener option for the environment. 480 may be better for the wallet. If newer drivers that fix the power issues come around and extend the capacity to overclock the memory it may very well be the best. Also considering some after market cards eventually.

I think the 480 RX's power input configuration is a failure. It should use the 8 pin power input like the Nano.

After what I've been reading, I'm inclined to agree with this.

I'm considering returning the 4 I purchased and waiting for the Sapphire Nitro as it has an 8-pin connector.

Bad news

It is still 6 pin. I was excited but we have to wait for AMD to fix the drivers or for Saphire to fix the card completely

Can somebody here who owns both a 7970 or 280X and bought an Rx 480 tell me the power difference between the two?

Hard to get an accurate power consumption figure when some people say it uses 120watts and some say 200watts. Also we all have different Bronze, Gold, Platinum PSUs.

Downloading from official amd site http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/AMD-Radeon-Software-Crimson-Edition-16.6.2-Release-Notes.aspx

The Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.6.2 installation package for Windows 10 and unfortunatelly don't see any AMD gaming evolving app or other stuff.. What's the correct name for this tune up utility? is it AMD Catalyst ?  Thank you in advance!

Have you tried MSI Afterburner?  It is the most common APP . I suggest you to install it and try it i hope it will help you because i use afterburner on my all card nvidia/amd.

Just wait for someone to reach this post.  480 uses 120 watts and gives the speed of 24 MHS . Check the OP i have updated it . i canceled my order for 480 because the site are selling it for 270$.

In the next few days, we will see the reduction of network hash rate as the new 480 RX will burn may motherboards and PSU.

Got all my rig with powered usb risers. Works like a charm. No overheating wires/ burned connecters or other stuff. But the stock coolers sucks horrible balls. I guess i will move my rig to the garage and turn the fans to 100%. 60% coolers with 81 temp in open rig is not nice at all. 24.8 mh/s stock hash rate by the way.

i see lots of cooling problems and broken fans coming.
desing is so closed and only one fan?
those  cant run at 100% speed very long time, bearings will kick out of the fan.

Do you use the 6 USB risers coming out of 2 PSU cables, or 3 USB per power cable? That is almost the limit of each cable.

I remember one SATA +12 connector can support 4.5A current. That is about 54W, lower than the PCIE +12 V slot specification.

got 1200 W platinum PSU +6 usb powered risers, each line has 3 x molex. So it's 2 lines of molexes 3 cards each.  3 PCI-E (6 slot cable) each 2... Seems working good.

That configuration should be safe enough for the power supply.
