The bitcoin does not has a lot of competition but it without any doubts has a bit of competition by banks that are also making coins.
I think that banks can let the bitcoin disappear as a example.

Bitcoin has been steadily losing market cap dominance, from 90%+ just two years ago to ~80% today.

When it comes to exchange dominance it's just 66.4%.

This trend will probably continue and in a few years there will be people using cryptocurrencies that do not know what bitcoin is.
I think bitcoin is the mother of all cryptocurrencies and it is highly unlikely that bbitcoin will be replaced by them but yes other cryptos will also make space for themselves and obviously restrict bitcoin usage to some extent

I doubt it, i think that the increase in altcoin is because of peoples increased knowledge and technical ability, but bitcoin will always be the safe haven.  if bitcoin crashes and burns the general public wont touch another crypto currency for 30 years

Bitcoin's only competition is by currencies trying to imitate the same thing it offers therefore I too consider it without any serious competition or something taking the same concept but starting in a different way. ETH and MONERO are good ideas but not something so new that it can take BTC's place.

The bitcoin has the competition from many other currencies. The examples are the Etheruem and litecoin.

nothing made by a bank, not that commercial banks have ever issued a currency in modern history, will resemble bitcoin in any way whatsoever. the way it works will always be totally at odds with how they want to operate.

they're gonna make settlement systems and that's it.

as for ethereum replacing bitcoin, there is no way in hell i'd trust 1 satoshi to ethereum for anything other than throwing it away on speculation. witness the multiple hard forks, crappy governance and absolute lack of usage so far.

bitcoin came out of nowhere and grew from nothing. no coin can ever match that. all subsequent alts will be poisoned or compromised by greed somewhere in their creation and that's why they'll never earn enough trust.

bitcoin, technology, anonymity etc... all are secondary, First thing is money. If some other coin is trusted to make more money than bitcoin, slowly or maybe suddenly bitcoin will have heavy competition.

I agree people are attracted to bitcoin because they can earn money from it.  They can use Bitcoin to transact and earn a huge amount of profit just by having a commision from the transaction.  And I don't think bitcoin don't have competition.  There are lots of other coin that try to compete against bitcoin but the result is clear.

I don't think the ethereum is going to beat bitcoin in the future as there is also a flaws with ETH. And there is really no competition with crypto currency because bitcoin is the most used of them all. And I think all the alt coins are just being used for rotating money in the ecosystem of bitcoin and just being used for trading.

Bitcoin is the base of all the other crypto-currencies. I don't think that competition is really necessary because it's just a currency and the importance of currencies does not depend on competition. I think the ones that are needing to compete with each other is the altcoins since there are too many of them, one altcoin should rise. Even though altcoins have their own target markets, I still think competition in their place is much needed for their coin's price to rise.

yeah, in your dreams it will.

i have seen so many other altcoins with the same dream/wish to beat bitcoin and even get close to it over the years.

now look at the list of alive altcoins. do you see any of them. no
but bitcoin is still here and growing. ether is  just a temporary passing thing. you can never grow when you are centralized even if you keep the price up

There is a FOMO brewing...

Beats me. So many coins made already but none has gone as far as bitcoin reached.
That only means that bitcoin is the pinnacle of cryptocurrencies.  Grin

Bitcoin is big because it relies on nothing else for its value or success. The community primarily revolves around it, and it is the most widely known and accepted cryptocurrency to exist.

One of the biggest things Bitcoin has going for it is that it came first. This means the community adopted it as the primary crypto, and it went on from there.

Love that thought. I dont want also something that rely on anything. If that exist then problems come. Look at the other coins, what is happening to them when they reach the volume they want. They just suddenly disappear. Look at companies with a boss just like Bitmixer. If the boss wants to stop then everything stops. Here in bitcoin there is none.

I agree with your point, even all Altcoin are traded in BTC and they are valued in Bitcoins only, but bitcoin is not valued on any coin but by its own technology and traders. Bitcoin was the main source code to be implemented for digital currency and no other coin is their to match it.

Yup bitcoin is highest cost currency among all digital currencies and Its only digital currency accepts to buy some things in online and in small physical stores. So bitcoin is antique stock and costliest one around world in future.

Well, technically, bitcoin has competition. Lots of em. The advantage of bitcoin is that bitcoin is far far ahead compared to other cryptocurrencies

I don't think bitcoin has or will have any serious competition at least not at this time, ETH looks promising but plenty of issues and mostly rising because of the pump and dump strategies rather than serious use same for monero and the like, You can't use these coins mostly and can just exchange them for BTC so no serious advantage in having them other than to sell them at a better BTC price.

The competition you refer to is mostly because Bitcoin price has become more stable as of recent, no more devastating volatility as it had been just a couple of years ago. Yes, the price more than tripled last year, but it was a relatively slow "organic" growth (in respect to what we see in altcoins being constantly pumped and dumped). Nowadays people don't see price changes in the range of half a dozen percentages every other day, and they start to look into altcoins for that (to get their adrenaline rush)...

Whether it is good or bad is another question
