Its looking like a nice morning for altcoins so far - almost all are on the rise today after a few weeks of being hammered by the BTC price. =)

1)  AMP for some reasons: current price (~14k sat) is under the Last crowdsale price (33-40k sat), lots of work will be done through 2017 (you can see their Roadmap on https://blog.synereo.com/2016/09/15/synereo-dev-timetable-2017-2018/.

2) NAV: Nav is undervalued at the moment. This is an Anon coin with only 1.9 M marketcap and the team is going to complete some huge projects during dec 2016 - 2017 http://navcoin.org/projects. If this coin will be implemented in some stores (if you know what I mean Wink ) the price will skyrocket.

3) SNLGS tokens: Tokens from SinguralDTV project. One of the ICO of 2016. Raised something like 7.5M$ in 30 minutes. For me this tokens is a good choice for some reasons: price at the moment is under the ico; SDTV will launch products starting from 2017. Tokens will Pay dividends in ETH.

4) (maybe?)  I'm a Digibyte fan and I hope to see DGB in top10 currencies someday during 2017. Imo most undervalued coin in circulation.

I Mentioned AMP, NAV & SNLGS because I think they are coins that can at least increment their price by +300% during 2017.
There are other good projects in the forum. and I keep eyes on other coins, too.

Well to answer this, I've gotta question first: As I am a novice to this world: What are some of the criteria that are to be looked at to judge or analyze the future of a crypto currency or altcoin?
Are there any?

Do research, see if the community is active, development is active and the coin has credibility. Everyone here giving you advice will be bias towards the coins they have invested in. I will tell you to invest in Gulden but that's because I truly believe in the project but it doesn't mean you or anyone else should. Do what you think is right for you and see if the coin you invest in can backup the hype with past releases.

Crypto is 99% talk but most of the time the talk is never implemented into the code. This is why I like Gulden, they deliver without the talk/hype.

Synereo and SNGLs are both steal to any investors that can get hold of both now, both are trading at 60% below their ICO price presently.

Bitcoin - not an altcoin but i may have the next big pump next year

Monero - The true fungible cryptocurrencie

Ethereum - if it can survive all the forks may be the best option for Smartcontracts, but im not sure :\

Gulden my friends , Gulden.

Gulden is taking crypto 2 years into the future with the 1.6.0 update this week. The only downside of Gulden is no real marketing but the development team behind it is on fire!

https://developer.gulden.com/

This update will wipe out the rest of alt coins that are still copy and paste of bitcoin QT wallets.

Coin 1: Bitcoin

Why:

- Heading towards mainstream adoption
- Lightning network in 2017
- Most advanced coin
- No IPO/ICO 100% fair distribution

Coin 2: Litecoin

Why:

- Development is moving at a very fast pace
- Might go up with bitcoin if it goes up
- No IPO/ICO 100% fair distribution
- Remains strong as ever after more than 5 years of operation

Coin 3: Peercoin

Why:

- Development has picked up a lot with projects such as peerassets, peerticker, V0.6 protocol update etc.
- Running for more than 4 years
- Oldest POS coin
- No IPO/ICO 100% fair distribution

Coin 4: Dogecoin

(Yes im serious) Grin

Why:

- Running for almost 3 years
- Strong community
- Gets people used to crypto
- Has some adoption as a tipping currency

Coin 5: Counterparty

Why:

- Running for almost 3 years
- Assets on bitcoin are booming as result counterparty value is rising
- Has real life utility with projects like foldingcoin giving counterparty value

Except for counterparty, agree that these alts are going to be around and strong in 2017. Doge is always dear to me, I just like its playful theme.

But as investments? I couldn't say I'd feel strongly about any except bitcoin itself.

What do you think of XZC ?

zcash? it's a great coin for me i don't care about the dev fee many great coin have it, look at ethereum it was premined like no other and has the biggest marketcap ever, if the dev are competent they need funds to keep their project alive, i find zcash to be better than monero currently, and it will replace it in the darkweb

this is the reason why i'll choose zcash as investment for 2017

What is in your opinion the best altcoin to invest in for 2017 and please add why. Cheesy
Forgive my stupidity but ETH has shown some serious ups this year.Apart from the fork drama,I still feel investing in ETH is not too bad.Second,Zcash, not for it's shitty overrated concept but fools are going to pump it real hard.

I'm mainly in Peercoin and Novacoin at the moment, I think they might get good traction, development is continuing properly and release of PeerAssets soon may give it a boost.
Not sure about Peercoin,I trust Novacoin devs. However I'm still skeptical about their scalability.

*** I do not recommend to invest in any mentioned coins without proper research, how it was launched, how it developed, community involvement, adoptionrate, price history and volume, etc.
So do your own homework cause you're the ONLY ONE responsible for your funds.
Doesn't matter.Noobs don't bother to read any of it to be honest. How do you think ICO scams run so successfully? Wink

Vcash (XVC) has it all, to be perfect, only need a few good mobile wallets, and will close the circle.

Who test it, understands what I speak.

I know and you are right. Just needed to have it written in OP conciddering posts and discussions of previous years. Because many people feel the need to warn newbees and investors it deserves to be there and hopefully some people do take note and be more cautious. Aside of all the negativitiy in the altcoin world one must not forget that there are indeed very good altcoin projects out there, but it takes a really good research to find who deserves some of that trust.

Also cryptocurrencies is a relatively new world. A huge pile of cash from regular investors but also investment funds of big corporations is trying to find it's way and they all want a slice of the next big thing. I think there are plenty rich people/bitcoiners out there that are just gambling on ICO's and we should not worry so much about their wins and losses.

Vcash:

Why: Zerotime, Chainblender, UDP connections, adaptive block size, and ZeroLedger coming soon.

Translation: Fast 0 confirmation transactions, anonymous if you use chainblender and only send coins that have been blended, no block size debate necessary, and Zeroledger will sync in about 1 minute per year on fast hardware. Recently released Zeroslot, the first Vcash gambling site, future releasd of mobile wallet.

Further translation: Speed, anonymity, and scalability. Basically, what Bitcoin promised to be able to do but cannot.
