I have updated the OP and checked the poll. The results are clear and I will act accordingly.
there are people with 10's of accounts here. So only 1 against could make the NO option win. I myself would never use a forum poll result to any practical decision. But good the yes option won anyway It wasn't a forum poll. It only allowed 1 vote per ip. Number of forum accounts was irrelevant. And the option that won was 'No'.

The poll is not a good indicator. One person could vote 10 times if he wanted to. Would have voted yes (remove the add) if I see this earlier. It is too calculating and mean to put an ad on a thread.

To be honest, I didn't even notice the ad until I read this last page. I had to go back to the OP specifically for it...and I have used the OP a few times (at one point I spent an hour looking at the various linked threads).
I don't see it as a big issue and have voted accordingly.
Ha, that says something about how much the ad might be worth to potential purchasers too. When you say you don't see it as a big issue and have vote accordingly, that sounds like a vote for "i don't care". But it seems a little ambiguos. English is famous for a thing sometimes called "negative raising" where people say things like: I don't think she should do that. And they mean: I think that she shouldn't do that. So by this pattern, it's entirely clear whether you mean "I see it as not a big deal." Or "I don't see it as a big deal". If you catch my drift. I understand your point but I intentionally did not weigh in with my opinion on what he should do and why he should do it regarding his thread and whether or not I think that his status as a Staff member should matter. I was Staff for a very large News site for over five years and a recurrent theme was whether or not Site Guidelines should apply to Staff - "Can they post with opinions and not have it reflect on official stance of the Site" kind of stuff. Staff members should have the freedom to do what other members are allowed. I kind of agree with your point on potential purchasers...it is one of my biggest concerns regarding the effectiveness of these campaigns in general, especially for small campaigns. I have twice extended my participation in a closed campaign for free because they were small and cool but closed soon after they started due to no discernible difference...

I wouldn't have even bothered even putting it up to a poll but glad to see the community responded rightfully. Ignore the jealousy and envy and keep doing what you're doing as this list is very helpful to the community and most don't care about the small advert and have no problem with it being there.
True enough, I voted don't care since I really didn't care either way on the damn ad It's there or it's not there it exists or it's absence of existing did not matter to me

I'm kidding, but if they keep us waiting and we keep talking about PD, they are getting some free advertising too.

No! Some users are giving free advertising for PD. I saw some of the users. And, please keep PD out of this thread as it hasn't started yet or don't know when it will. Mitchell has already said this a few pages back. Thanks! The poll is not a good indicator. One person could vote 10 times if he wanted to. Would have voted yes (remove the add) if I see this earlier. The ad isn't a big one. AFAIK he put this ad after a long discussion in the forum, you could have raised your opinion at that time. Don't be jealous when you [1] see others are earning some $$$...!!! [1] I am telling in general, not just to medUSA. ~~MZ~~

Obviously the PD thread but there's not much to discuss and there's not much point speculating on it to be honest. I'd just wait for further updates from stunna but don't hold your breath.

Well, I'm quite happy to see the lively discussion. I'm not surprised that bitcoiniformation is keeping the ad, I'm pretty sure he was going to do so either way. The straw poll was cute, tho.
Diamondcardz of course hates on my opinion. Personally, I feel quite vindicated that I'm not the only one who notice that a community-owned thread has been coopted for personal profit (even if it is a small amount). Also, I guess I'm not the only one who feels that staff doing this is different than non-staff.
Again, haters, I'm not going to start my own thread, I just simply don't use the OP of this thread anymore. It's really not too hard to see what's going on with sig-ad campaigns by just looking around in services and services-discussion. It is a forum and we *do* have search.
Nevertheless, if anyone does end up starting a community-owned non-for-profit overview thread, I'd probably start using it again like I used to use this one, and the one before this one that Rannasha ran.
Peace and thanks again everyone for the throughtful discussion.

This thread is not community owned. The thread (like the rest of the forum) is owed by theymos. It is not uncommon for information dense OP's to have advertisements on them. The reason you do not see them very often is that there are very few contect dense threads/OP's. If you want a good example of threads with ads that are also content dense look at dogie's threads regarding various mining equipment in the hardware section of the mining section

You're funny. But if you took what I said in context you'd realize that I wasn't talking about who owns the computers or who owns the domain but rather I was referring to the fact that nearly two years ago there was a thread run by Rannasha which laid out the overview of the situation for the sig-ad campaigns. While obviously only a single OP has the right to edit his/her post and therefore keep the thread up-to-date, it was understood that it was community effort therefore people posted in the thread when there was news to report so that the OP could be updated. bitcoinformation took up that mantle of leading that community when Rannasha stepped down. Some time ago, he decided that he needed to get paid for this and put up an ad. I stopped visiting since then. At the time he put up the ad he had to ask staff for a special exception to the rules about ads in the threads. He got this exception. I objected at the time, and, as I said, stopped visiting the OP. Nowadays he's staff and I bring up the question again about this ad and his special exception. I'm not sure that your point about who owns the forum is relevant here. Nevertheless, thanks!

Nowadays he's staff and I bring up the question again about this ad and his special exception. Like I said before, I'm not in charge of making that decision. I don't get special privileges. The only "power" I have is over the Dutch subsection, which I moderate. I'm not surprised that bitcoiniformation is keeping the ad, I'm pretty sure he was going to do so either way. The straw poll was cute, tho. I would have removed the ad if people wanted it gone, as I am a man of my word and I listen to what the community wants. I have always done that and I see no reason why I should stop that, because of an ad I have in my thread. You are accusing me of keeping it anyway, no matter what people voted, which is offensive to me. If you don't like it bad luck, I'm not here to please everyone. If you really feel like this thread shouldn't have an ad, you can always contact theymos and badbear. They gave me the rights to add it and they can revoke it as well.
