According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

Bitcoin is now worth over ten times what it was during capitulation in early July on Gox.

Wow. Not bad for less than 5 months.

so does this mean I can't buy on coinbase anymore? I have to buy at future price of nov 22nd? wtf?

yeah, but they give you the option to cancel the order in case you aren't pleased with the price on the 22nd....um I guess that's good? I can't really figure out what's happening. Maybe they all just need a long nap.

It's really not that complicated. They simply ran out of coins to sell.
They intentionally let their stock of coins run empty because they don't want to hold too many coins during the events that will unfold in a few hours.

There are almost no coins left on the exchanges.

Now is when the artificial scarcity of Bitcoin finally starts to make a difference.

We should switch to microBTC FAST so people can return to buying at sane numbers.

Have we officially gone parabolic?
This has happened twice before in Bitcoin's history:

http://bitcoincharts.com/charts/mtgoxUSD#rg5zigDailyztgSzm1g7zm2g25zl

The last two times, we went up about 1.5 orders of magnitude quickly, spent some time cooling off.

A bit off topic, but what's the best way to get USD into any of the exchanges quickly*? I used to use bitinstant but that's down. Wires all seem to take 10 days. I need some capital ready to soak up the blood bath Sad
