There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

An interesting thought struck me earlier - now that the majority of my personal wealth lies with bitcoin, what would be the best and most secure way of leaving them in a will?!?  If I were to get run over by a truck tomorrow, my coins would probably be lost.  None of my family or friends would have any idea what to do with paper wallets either  Shocked

I hope I don't get beat up over this, but I asked the same question on the LTC forums (https://forum.litecoin.net/index.php/topic,6662.msg51607.html#msg51607)

Essentially I was interested in finding a lawyer who understood crypto currencies, so they could help out...that way my family doesn't have to rely on poorly written instructions, or forgetting all the little steps, etc.

Ahh, the beauty of multiple "leading" exchanges.  Even if each has some degree of incompetency, it's extremely unlikely all of them will fail at the same time (like Gox did during April).

People will just stop buying if there's none for sale at a reasonable rate whatever that may be.

Somebody is "hiding" a ~2000BTC ask at around $3300 (Goxbux) on Gox's order book.  Not sure what they're trying to communicate since most people won't ever look up there.

I can hear it say: "Psst hey, whale friends, come up here and stop selling your coins so cheap!"

There are online services which provide certain usernames and passwords for your digital after-life.  Perhaps a bitcoin version would be of use?   I just reg'd the domain name BitcoinBeyond.com  just in case I figure out how to make it work.

You could set up a bank account, linked to bitpay or some payment remitter, and use a time-locked transaction to it.  While you are alive, you can periodically interrupt this transaction so that it is not sent.  After you are dead, you no longer can and it will fund the bank accounts of your heirs.

There should be a service to do this for you before too long I have heard several in the works.

I think the simplest approach would be that you start the "BitcoinBeyond.com" service.  The service has lawyers who are familiar with estate law and cryptos.  Then the crypto nerd - such as myself - would leave a letter with private keys to my significant other whom I'd want to leave the cytpos to.  The letter would only contain say 1/2 of the private key with the remaining halves in a will.  That way no irate ex-spouse could get his/her hands on them without my will being read.  The estate lawyer at "BitcoinBeyond.com" would then assist the various recipients of the will's benefits to "cash out" the coins or do whatever other action they'd like.
