We already block most forms which can be blocked, this was a change in bitcoin 0.8 (that was, in fact, causing withdraws delays for mtgox because they produced transactions with invalid encoding).

The recent flood of transactions use a pushdata change. A patch to block it was written in September 2013, but didn't make it into the codebase until today. If your node is running git bitcoin, just update and you'll have it.

Just checkin' back...I can see form the prices there's been another panic and bounce.

Can anyone give me a brief precis (I tried reading the 30+ pages but all I can get is DDOS and wothrawal issues)....can anyone expand or is that the gist?  Grin

there was no DOS, i proved that by sending 1mBTC to three poeple in the mist of the "DOS" all three TX got confirmed in a timely manner.

Thanks for the clarification.

I sent some from Stamp about 18hours ago whihc arrived even though the "issues' were being reported then....it seems very ad hoc these problems

only SOME of the TX coming from exchanges were affected.

they have since stopped all BTC withdrawals until they can be sure it is 100% reliable

You know, if every exchange switched to mBTC as the default, I wonder if this would psychologically encourage the price to rise. Hm.

So the only catalyst for a price rise is a bounce from a panic sell? Those are getting lower every time.

I'm wondering with regard to the malleability issue, having read both Glen Maxwell's interview and http://falkvinge.net/2014/02/11/the-embarrassing-fact-mtgox-left-out-of-their-press-release/ whether this issue wasn't on anyone's radar until Gox (stupidly) made it global news.

That is, are the issues at Stamp and elsewhere the work of 'hackers'/attackers who have been alerted to the issue but before Monday had no idea.

"hackers" have been aware of the issue for quite a while and almost never get their news from the "news"

100 times no. if people can't figure out the decimal system, then I don't want them even trying to make transactions in bitcoin.

we are a long ways off from public acceptance.

maybe some day, buy not today...

Well potential attackers could have gotten ideas from the MtGox issues and decided to strike while the iron is hot. I mean once FUD is released on the herd you have to rub it in real good and not give the market time to fix things and rebuild confidence. There's no need to be an actual threat to the network, it just has to seem that way superficially because that's how most people and the general media perceive things. So it was enough to cause other exchanges to temporarily halt BTC withdrawals, even if the fix is easy and there's no real harm done. Just the fact that people see that after Gox another big exchange halts BTC withdrawals is enough for people to basically equate the two and cause more fear and panic to spread around, even though the MtGox case is way different and more serious.

I have an aversion against dogmatic and dishonest people. It culminates in outbursts of the opposite order sometimes, even though I like Bitcoin.

So, you call Bitcoin shit because of a bug that affects appearance, not function?

Don't you think that's a bit of a dishonest proposition?
It just amazes me how it affects all major exchanges. Actually didn't expect that. So yes, from a practical world view, I would say that something has gone wrong that this was not noticed before by any of them.

It amazes you? From my experience, I expect the exchanges to do as little as possible to continue to function. Again, this has everything to do with the exchanges, not Bitcoin.

The day we have a robustdecentralized Bitcoin exchange...

fixed that for you Wink

It won't show up on the change bars. It will just show the walls almost double for a few seconds, then go away. It could have been someone adjusting their order and forgot to hide them, but that would be a lot of buying power for one person. I haven't seen it since I posted. Ill try to catch it on a screen shot as I watch all exchanges over 10 hours a day.
