if you are going to invest thousands into btc, then I suggest getting a hardware walllet, the cheapest of these is around twenty-something Euros and the advantages are huge, particularly for those having multiple BTC (The additional security).
a hardware or an online wallet is quiet risk both, why? because in a hardware wallet you doesnt know when a virus may attack your pc , you need to secure it too, to avoid corrupted software, in online wallet hackers might be your enemy both they are risky but i more prefer a hardware wallet.

I agree with you, because hardware wallet are somewhat immune to scammers and hackers alike. But when you say, "you never know when the virus may attack"? Then use a relevant Anti-Virus Software, or even better, invest on a better PC like Mac, who's an impregnatable security when it comes to virus. Just to make that Hardware Wallet surely secured.

I store my bitcoins in my electrum wallet in my PC.I have been using it for the past two years.Till now,i have not found any issues. We could set our transaction fee manually. There is no synchronizing problem in this wallet.
I'm currently using an online wallet, probably will soon migrate to the desktop wallet. Because currently blockchain does not support sending to multiple addresses in a single transaction. Maybe i will try electrum

I think sending to multiple addresses in a single transaction is a good option when we talk about peoples who use daily there bitcoin. I didn't try electrum until now, But i will in the near future.
For this moments, I still using my xapo wallet. but I want to quite this wallet because transactions fees are abnormal. I mean too high fees.

Same thing any skilled broker would do with large sums of money. Scatter them in various different accounts or better yet in different exchange commodities (diversifying your portfolio) such as having x amount in x and y wallets, y amount in some type of bitcoin investment option such as a security or other low-risk/high protected account (do things such as federally insured treasury or highly rated AAA bera bonds exist yet for BTC)? and z amount in some online wallet that you could dump a lot of currency easily if you had to.

I am keeping part of my coins invested in some sites.
One part of coins is in online wallet and the rest of coins are in paper wallets, in case I need them i just scan qr with my phone.
And I am holding small part of coins in exchange for trading.

I have all my coins in on an online trading site (paxful) (low volume)

I plan on making a large investment very soon, and want to safely store all of my coins
I.E I basically want to drop a couple thousand, and keep them in the safest possible way, where I can revisit them in 5-10 years or so and reap the benefits, or cry about the loss.

What is the best way to do this, and what's the best way of ensuring a backup?

How do you currently store your coins

thanks in advance for any inputs

Keeping coins at online not a bad idea also, Kepping it depends on how big the amount is, more the amount, you should increase your security by using different kind of wallets. And as mentioned, Physical wallets are kind of best, but it is also vulnerable, from like thefts, loosing it.

Store you bitcoins on bitcoin wallet that has a private key also find a bitcoin wallet that has a vault option like xapo had. Right now I'm using mycelleium. There is also a thread here in forum that will answer that question : View these all you need is in there, choose/pick one or more and be wisely as always.

That will keep you earning some of profit by holding and you are not really prone to loss your all bitcoin becauase you are dividing it to many so if one of your wallet get hack then you do have still in other wallet. Also the best is you do put it in paper wallet that is really flexible if you are in needs on money  so you just scan the qr and you are ready good to go

Same with me.  I do not have any wallet onlt the wallet I used for about two years now.  And I think it is safe to store my bitcoin in that wallet because before you could actually make any transaction, you will require to have an identification.  Illegal transactiin were blocked, I heard it on some of my friends.  So it is okay for me to just store my bitcoins there.

To use bitcoin desktop do not need many tools? You just need a latpop or computer? Every bitcoin user must have a personal computer right?
You just need to install it and wait for the sync. Just that

Just remember that putting or storing your bitcoins there is very risky because you cannot predict if your coins will not be gone in that site because the hackers are always watching. If you want to make your coins safe then you should have a wallet for them and just put the enough amount of bitcoin that you can use in trading in order to prevent getting hacked or getting your bitcoin stolen by the hackers online.

You might want to consider using hardware wallet which as they said is the most secure to use. Online wallets on the other hand should not be your storage of all your bitcoin but you but rather store a little so that you can have bitcoin to spend easily.

I also do not use desktop wallets, not because I do not have the equipment but I'm more comfortable to use my wallet online because it is easier to use and flexible. I think the online wallet is also pretty safe. I've never had a problem with online wallets
