I think it's just because they have an offer from a big team like Manchester City, so it's a good opportunity to sell a player with a high price. After Varane left, Real really needs another centreback. They lost both 1st choice options from the previous season, they brought in Alaba though but so far they can pair him only with Eder Militao. They have Nacho as well, but no other senior centrebacks.

If they do not bring a top-class, first 11 CB by the end of the transfer market, they are really playing with fire. And from what I've seen so far, the media isn't really connecting them with any.
