Age isn't a risk in that regard, but a fact and you are right that 31 sounds quite different than 30 even though it is so close, but 30 sounds like a tipping point anyway and every year after that definitely makes his value decline but also his personal position in negotiations about the salary. He could still wait until next year, but if he wants to achieve the maximum for his career then now is the time. Also, he is totally healthy right now. What happens if he decides to wait one more year and he is without luck and injures himself like tearing some ligament in his knee. That should also be included in any considerations.
