If I have a faulty board is it possible to know which chip is faulty and is it possible to swap it for a new one?

Sorry for the slightly off-topic post, but does anyone know of a reputable individual or company in the US who will be coordinating assembly / production of K1 usb mining devices? I was hoping to land a few to use as gifts... Something a few of my kindred coin-geeks would appreciate.   : )

Would it be a good idea to spread the bad chip risk amongs all buyers in a batch? My problem with the current situation is who will get the shaft for the bad chips? If we think there could be a maximum of 2% chips failure we should reserve 2% of the batch has a reserve and all buyers should pay 2% more for the reserve of chips:

0.086 * 0.02 = 0.00172 more per chips for a reserve of 200 chips (2%)

During assembly, we can use the reserve to replace the bad chips. At the end of shipping and testing if for example 1% of the chips were faulty they are sent back to avalon for replacement. The rest of the chips in the reserve that are goods are sold in an auction at the best price. The replacements chips from Avalon will also be sale in an auction when received back. All the profit from the sales will be returned to the buyers (steamboat can keep 9% for is work). At the end no one should loose money and all of us will have better chance to have working chips and boards.

Won't work. Just order extras if you are worried or pay steamboat for testing.

I wouldn't worry too much about the fail rate on chips.  I've purchased & used hundreds of chips while DIYing electronics over the years and I never encountered one that was DOA.  I think requiring everyone to pay an additional previously unmentioned cost at this point is a bit unrealistic.  If you're very worried, perhaps it's a good idea to purchase a few extra as backup while they're still available

Search this thread for "K1" - steamboat mentions that it will be considered after the K16 prototype is complete.  Also that there are others planning to sell K1s preassembled

Quick question, does anyone have an indication on what the yield is expected to be on Avalon's bulk orders?

Does Avalon pre-test the chips and only send 10,000 known-good-die? Or do they simply cut up the wafers and ship, so some group buy purchases may end up with 9,900 working chips out of 10K, whiles others yield 5,000 working chips out of 10K?

For PCB board assembly there is an additional yield lost. Even if all 10K die work in a shipped batch, post assembly some die will fail. How will that be handled?

I am VERY interested in this and think steamboat is doing a great job putting this project together.

But that said, it seems we might be rolling the dice a bit. If you order 20 boards, maybe 100% will work, but maybe only 50% will.

Avalon has stated each chip will be tested before shipping. That being said, inevitably there will be some bad chips. How this will be handled is yet to be determined. It is suggested to purchase additional chips to account for losses. It is very unlikely 50% of the chips will arrive DOA.

I will find out what the protocol is for determining which chip is faulty. A local member who has access to pick n place machines, and experienced assemblers, has offered his services. It may be possible to have the chips replaced for a nominal fee.

I would like to thank those of you who have taken the time to answer questions. I would like to answer each of you immediately, but one of the ways I'm keeping costs low is by running a skeleton crew with low overhead, and have to process emails, pm's, and questions in this thread as batches.

Assembly is on a FIFO basis. The payment mechanism is being worked out and integrated into the final solution.

I would agree with this, firstly because its a bit of a crapshoot who gets one or more bad chips, and who does not. Also, secondly, because if it is recommended that everyone end up ordering extra chips, then the majority of people could end up with a handful of loose chips, which creates more work in terms of accounting for those extra chips and getting them to their respective owners or figuring something to do with them. As a relatively small buyer at 32 chips, I can order a few more to compensate for bad ones, but I think its in everyone's best interests to pool the cost of spare chips to cover for bad once. Just my $0.02... but that's fiat so it's not quite as valuable...   : )
