Just use the official wallet from DeepOnion and avoid third-party web wallets. The case with the hacked accounts happened to such a third party wallet, where no one really knew who the sites admin was. In your own wallet your onions are safe! Good luck and plant a wonderful garden.

you basically only need to have your wallet open with coins in it that's it
it will start the staking automatically

As far as I have understood this should happen  

Yes, their script will automatically catch rank adjustments. If for some reason it does not, reach out to them directly and they will rectify the situation ASAP
