It's doesn't trade if the BTC-e backend is down, it's just another frontend.

Panic, panic, panic. I have been a user on btc-e since 2012, and so far they always came through. I am not advocating for them, but c'mon this happend before that they are offline for maintenance. They already announced that there is something going on since they increased the number of conf to 6, and I know this is because of the upcoming changes. But for those changes, I am very sure that they have to upgrade their wallet and stuff - imagine the simplest thing. Something goes wrong and you have to download the whole blockchain again? This takes ages, doesn't matter on what kind of connection you are. I would wait 24 hours before panicking. We have witnessed bitstamp being offline for days, we lived through that, I am sure we can live through this.
Makes sense thanks for calming me down : D

Anyone have any idea how we might find out what the heck happened if BTC-e doesn't tell us?

just FYI, btc-e has been hacked before. at least once and they lost a rather large amount of money. they paid their users in full and without any hassle.
and this is a simple scheduled maintenance they occasionally have.
Hopefully it is a just maintenance stuff. Because BTCecom must have taken lots of precautions after the first hack they had and must be having added security into the project. This is for sure a maintenance and we must not stress out so immediately. The official tweets are being made so no need to worry about it really.

Does anyone else think this may be related to the virus that Russian officials mentioned hours ago?

How do you know that the owners were Russian citizens in 2011?
The owners of BTC-e are Alexei and Alexander, who previously worked in ZhK Skolkovo Park, Moscow. Until 2013, some information was available on their identities, but all of that disappeared suddenly that year. We don't even know their surnames. I am also not sure whether they are Russian citizens or not, but since they have worked in the Skolkovo Park, I assume they have / had Russian passports The "Alexei" in your post could be this dude Heck, I confronted him few times here in the past but I never thought that he was (could be) one of the Btc-e owners (leading developers). He is certainly Russian, and what's more his overall attitude seems to be kinda progovernment, pro-Putin (if that means anything). I don't know what's happened to this exchange, but I was really pissed off when they hired a moderator for their chat box who couldn't speak proper Russian. Besides, their introduction of betting didn't resonate quite well with my idea about what a Bitcoin exchange should be busy with or involved in
