He's probably being pretty hyperbolic, but a lot of what happens in 2018 and 2019 will be a better tell of where Bitcoin is going to go by the time 2020 rolls around. If I remember correctly the next halving is supposed to happen by then and the rest of the happenings in the market will be the great indicator. If Bitcoin cracks $100,000 by 2019 then there is a chance, however very unlikely due to the amount of money required to push it up. If the market isn't very active and doesn't charge upwards over the course of the next few years, it might as well be a pipe dream at the very best.

Yes a typo, I meant BCH. Bitcoin and Bicoin Cash is connected because basically every Bitcoiner has Bitcoin Cash as well, and the distribution is basically the same. First of all, bitcoin doesn't need any big companies to make it famous. It is decentralized, and by definition it does not need a central entity to promote nor sustain it for it to survive and thrive. Yes it would be good to have some big companies to back btc but it's not necessary.

Second, $500k is indeed just a number. Fiat is going to inflate in the long run and bitcoin is not inflationary. That means that intrinsically bitcoin is only going to go up in fiat value as time goes on, and mass adoption takes place.

However, John Mcafee seems to think that mass adoption can happen within just 3 years. I don't think this is likely.

I hate to say it but, i don't think that this is likely to happen at all. The price has risen a lot and in between halvings there is usually reduced economic activity within the bitcoin ecosystem. $500k per bitcoin would be a whopping 8 trillion dollar market cap. I'm not sure whether McAfee was high when he said this or he just genuinely believed in bitcoin. If he genuinely believed in bitcoin then great, i have nothing against that. However he should really consider what he says before he actually says it to millions of people publicly. He is making bitcoin sound like some sort of magical investment fund that pays off everyone who invests in it, which isn't exactly what bitcoin is.

Anyways, $500k is way more than 20x the price. It is more like 120x the price, which means that mass adoption HAS to happen before this sort of price level can happen. 10,000 by 2020 is perfectly reasonable and reachable if we look at the history of bitcoin, it is not a crazy prediction at all. 10,000 could very well be reached by 2019 I think. My guess is that Bitcoin will see its peak in two or three years, then many investors will sell at 10,000. Bitcoin should remain between 8000 and 10 000 for a while in 2019.

I think that's quite impossible for that short period of time. 3 years won't be enough for Bitcoin to reach that huge amount. Maybe if 10 or more years and when Bitcoin is already legal to most countries, that value would be reached because the demand will definitely be high when that day come since it will be used by more people in daily transactions that will make the value of Bitcoin more expensive.

Maybe he predicting too much high value and it is not possible to reach 500,000$ in two years time, even there is a huge growth in the market but at the same time market value should also increase, in order to increase its price.

That is just a fantasy, we all would like a price that high but we need to be realistic the chances of that happening are low and I'm being generous because there is a big chance it is completely impossible, now if bitcoin did reach that price then I think the lives of many people in the forum will change dramatically, even having something as small as 0.1BTC could change the life of someone living in a poor country.

Not even in next 5 years this is probably possible. The person who stated this is either in a deep dream or gone mad. Value this big is so huge and kind of a dream, I accept but a dream which will always be a dream. I think it will never go to that height, $50k-100k would have been still believable, but after the recent crash it seems its tough, and might even take years even if it happens.

You're right that bitcoin is very unique in its sentiment and the idea behind it. But from a purely technological point of view it could easily be surpassed in the future. At that point it's a battle between the idea of bitcoin and the usability of other coins.

The cryptocurrency market is very unpredictable to write off the $500k prediction and 2-3 years is a lot of time anything could happen considering  the continued interest coming from people all over the world I think this could happen

Because if the price increase again at $20k it's hard to increase more it takes time to increase again. 

The higher the price is, the less hard it becomes to have the price increase further. It may sound weird, but it's a fact. The main thing is that throughout the years, the number of on-exchange coins has decreased dramatically, which heavily contributes towards a market that gains more value, and that in quite a short period of time. Institutions taking long term positions in Bitcoin, people are more willing to hold their coins for a long period of time, the altcoin market that has boomed big time, more people using Bitcoin as store of value, etc. Bitcoin's utility has never seen this much actual usage. If we take things to the next level, then funds based on actual coin supply will take even more coins out of circulation, it's pure madness. Take into consideration that the block halving is not that far away anymore, and understand for yourself how scarce Bitcoin actually is.

The problem is not the price since bitcoin has the potential to reach almost any price since it can become a substitute to all the fiat of the world the problem is the short amount of years in the prediction, if the prediction was in the next 50 years then I could think there was a chance it may happen but in 2020?
