CaVirtex strictly limited Canadian residents as the clients. That was one of the reason their customer base has not grown.

Vault of Satoshi used to be good long time ago but not that much in the last months. Cointrader does not have competitive price both for bid and ask. QuadrigaCX has issues in their API access control (at least from outside Canada). However QuadrigaCX would be the best CAD exchange at this moment..   Undecided

By the way, confusing Virtex.com is also in trouble, which is EgoPay related firm  Sad

awww this is sad news CAVIRTEX was my #1 goto CAD/BTC exchange for years Sad

They will go down in history as the only bitcoin exchange that didn't run away or lose everyones bitcoin claiming hack.

How many bitcoin exchanges shut down without owing anyone any money? Only CAVIRTEX!

No, instead they just sold shares promising a dividend, never paid one, tried to force people into a terrible buy back option and are likely going to pay out nothing to the people that gave them money and supported them from day 1.

Good riddance.

https://bitfinex.com/?refcode=UInJLQ5KpA <-- leveraged trading of BTCUSD, LTCUSD and LTCBTC (long and short) - 10% discount on fees for the first 30 days with the refcode

Never used Quadriga before but im gonna need to I suppose. TBH.. I dont trust any of these Canadian exchanges. Well that's not entirely true. I do trust CanadianBitcoins. They have a real office where you can go in and complain if something goes wrong. Having that alone puts them at the top for buying or selling btc in canada. I just wish they weren't a fixed rate exchange. Maybe they'll step up here and open a real exchange soon. Lord knows Canada needs one!

Vault of Satoshi had a real address.. I only ever bought my BTC in person.

Apparently Quadrigacx does as well but seeing as it is about 5000KM away I won't be going there anytime soon to see.  I have talked with Quardriga on the phone if that helps ne lol.

QuadrigaCX looks junk to me & rumor the people behind it are shady. Have they even picked up a MSB license in Canada yet?

ppl on reddit are saying cointrader.net will be our next best option moving forward & it seems to be favored among VoS former customers.

Maybe if I was looking to launder money I'd use quadrigacx.com as they are the only ones who will service anonymous money transfers no questions asked.

I heard the same thing... I hear the owner comes from a hacking background. Not really feeling that. Canada really needs a new place to safely trade bitcoins

What I wanna know is how do you go from "deposits disabled due to know issue" to "Cavirtex shutting down"?

Feb. 17, 2015, 12:12 p.m. - CAVIRTEX shutting down

Effective immediately, CAVIRTEX intends to cease carrying on an active Bitcoin business and will be winding down its operations in an orderly manner. As a result, effective immediately, no new deposits will be accepted by CAVIRTEX. Trading on CAVIRTEX will be halted effective March 20, 2015. Effective March 25th, 2015, no withdrawals will be processed. CAVIRTEX will communicate with any account holders that continue to hold balances after March 25, 2015.

We have maintained 100% reserves. CAVIRTEX is solvent and remains in a position to accommodate all customer withdrawal requests received prior to March 25, 2015. However, On February 15, 2015 we found reason to believe that an older version of our database, including 2FA secrets and hashed passwords, may have been compromised. This database did not include identification documents.

Because security and the safety of customer funds are paramount to our mission and the success of Bitcoin in general, CAVIRTEX has determined to cease active operations in the Bitcoin business and to return all customer funds. We believe that the damage to the company's reputation caused by the potential compromise will significantly harm our ability to continue to operate successfully.

As a result of the potential compromise of our database we cannot be certain of the confidentiality of account credentials. Please log into your account and change your password immediately. Please also clear your CAVIRTEX browser cookies. BTC and LTC withdrawal will remain temporarily disabled.

We ask that customers please fill in their Bitcoin and Litecoin return addresses on their user preferences. These fields have been cleared for all users and will need to be filled in once again. This page is accessible under Settings then User Preferences. Your BTC and LTC will be sent to that address. CAD withdrawals remain enabled.

CAVIRTEX continues to believe, as we have over the last three and a half years of operation, that cryptocurrency is here to stay. We appreciate all the support from our amazing customers who have been on this journey with us. You are the true Bitcoin pioneers and with your help we have imprinted Bitcoin in the Canadian conscience.

Even with this latest development, we are proud to say that we have never lost customer funds. To our knowledge, our production environment has never been breached.

CAVIRTEX intends to communicate with its loyal shareholders regarding this announcement in the near future.

Thank you to our loyal customers and all of our supporters who believed in us but more importantly trusted us.

Sincerely,

The CAVIRTEX Team

WTF?
Well at least they aren't running away with the coins or are they withdraws are disabled
Initiates a prompt Bitcoin run, I am kind of surprised that they shut down the whole venture though that really only does leave Lightbox and Canadianbitcoins as a trustworthy exchange in my opinion + the only other exchange I bothered to sign up for at present in Canada.

cointrader guys are trustworthy, and they have a physical location + bitcoin ATM in BC. Too bad the volume and withdrawal options are terrible. Hopefully they'll step up their game.

The Quebec move might have spooked them. But honestly I think they were just following VOS out the door. Bitcoins is too dangerous for mainstream businessers, too many regulatory and legal unknowns.

And don't forgot these pesky monkeys:

Damn that sucks. I used to use them for their debit cards and they worked very well and easy to sign up for. Sad news that they are shutting down. I doubt that they are shutting down only due to some old databases being compromised, maybe too much legal issues popping up and the thread of hackers (BTER right now maybe scared them) is growing too large.
Sad to see you go!

Still have my debit card sitting around pity to see that option die as well.
Got it originally to test it out but it was nice to have that option as well, that said as far as I know they were the only bitcoin exchange actually pushing for legislation in Canada and helped with the legal standing that we have her now, aka building the framework for companies that followed, it is a pity to see them go as they were pretty much the safest exchange out there and I presume they will enable withdraws would be strange to see that collapse now, although I did try the phone number and was told to use the ticket.
But in this case we know who the CEO is from talking at the Canadian Senate, blog and news-feeds + twitter and for the oldest vets still have the original IPO from March 18 2013 from havelock, just a little under two years.

Hopefully we will see them come back someday or the security level improves dramatically for Bitcoin exchanges

That's what I've been wondering. Some people on Reddit were talking about using QuadrigaCX, while others said that it's a sort of shady exchange.

Here's the thread if you'd like to read through it: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2w8lw9/canadians_with_cavirtex_and_vos_shutting_down/

It was more than a penny, and if they have a minimum deposit amount they should tell people on their site, or at least answer email and support tickets from their customers.

I have multiple bitcoins worth of deposits and shares, and have a few hundred bucks I was about to deposit.  this sucks :/ and something doesnt smell right.. it feels like they want out and this 8s a convenient excuse. maybe they are looking to jettison the "shareholders", or maybe they are afraid of new regulation, but there is definitely more to this story.
