The only thing that can prevent it from doing so at this stage is popularity. If it remains even as popular as it is now it still will hit it imo.

bitcoin has come a long way since the start of this thread.

my prediction is that bitcoin will countinue to have ups and downs but have a gradual increase over time. once people stop mining and all the coins are in circulation that are left to be mined. value will then really start to increase.

hmm somewhat i had same perception a week ago..! but now when i see there are 100 of altcoins .. who are trying to compete with this new crypto market.. ! like litecoin, dogecoin etc..! i'm not sure if there presence won't effect btc.

In 2013 the price didn't gradualy increase..I do think that mining/BTC price are related but you have to realise that it is not the only factor & it will be a long time before all the coins are mined

Yes indeed but you see a lot of bitcoiners that have been here for a long time that think that the mining difficulty has nothing to do with the price or that it is the only factor in the price discovery; I know for a fact that it is neither of the two
I look at the long term perspective for Bitcoin, the sentiment about the currency/asset and I want to buy at this price which doesn't mean I don't think there could be a correction in 2014 but I am not buying to make a quick buck, I am buying because it is useful to have some bitcoins and because it will feel great to have some when the dollar crashes

It seems to me at the moment that good news only affects BTC's price marginally, whereas bad news really hits the price. I'm not sure about the price at the moment or whether it will even go up much more with the release of ethereum etc.

It is always easier for those speculators to panic-sell than panic-buy lol.

When they see the news "Google is considering accepting bitcoin", they will not put a lot of their fiat in bitcoin.
When they see the FUD "Russia banned bitcoin", they could be in panic. Cheesy

I watched the Ethereum 10 minute introductory video, it sounds very interesting. There are quite a few protocols out there that are built on top of things like Bitcoin and Feathercoin etc, though it sounds like this one solution to provide the glue for many more future protocols.

What drives the price of bitcoin is a great conversation; lots of opinions, but hard to quantify.   Awareness and adoption seem to be huge factors [along with confidence].

It always interesting to me how BTC bounces back after a downturn...

when a bitcoins value rises does that mean that the code becomes more dense and it becomes harder to mine? because I heard something like btc's used to be a lot easier to mine when they first came out.

No, when a bitcoin's value rises, it means that sellers aren't willing to sell as cheaply, and buyers are willing to pay more.

because I heard something like btc's used to be a lot easier to mine when they first came out.

Correct, but this is not directly because of the value of the bitcoins.  Difficulty is automatically adjusted based on how long it takes to mine 2016 blocks.  If those blocks are mined faster than 2 weeks, then the protocol increases the difficulty, if it takes more than 2 weeks to mine those 2016 blocks, then the protocol decreases the difficulty.

There is an indirect effect.  If bitcoins become more valuable, then more people are likely to be more willing to spend more money on equipment to mine them.  This addition of mining equipment to the already existing mining equipment on the global bitcoin network increases the speed at which blocks are mined, so then after 2016 blocks the difficulty is increased.
